Colombia: SABMiller picks BNP to carry out public offer on Bavaria

London-based SABMiller PLC said May 24 it chose French investment bank BNP Paribas SA to carry out an obligatory public tender offer to purchase the stake it doesn't own in Colombia's biggest brewer Grupo Empresarial Bavaria SA, Dow Jones’ MarketWatch announced May 25.

In December, SABMiller paid $1.2 billion to buy a 25.2% stake in Bavaria in a public tender offer. With that operation, SABMiller raised its stake in Bavaria to 97%. The company then further raised its stake, buying shares on the open market and owns all but a little more than 2.3% of the beer maker.

Under Colombian law, if one disappointed minority shareholder requests an additional public tender offer, the company is forced to undertake the operation. In July, SABMiller had agreed to pay $7.8 billion to Bavaria's previous owner, Julio Mario Santo Domingo for his 71.8% stake in the company.

Juan Claudio Morales, a former manager of the bankers' association, Asobancaria, and also a minority shareholder in Bavaria claimed in December, SABMiller had paid Santo Domingo more than the minority shareholders.

Colombian traders are speculating the new public tender offer might take place on late August.

Georgia: 2005 beer production reached 50.864 million litres

Statistics provide that Georgia’s 2005 beer production reached 50.864 million litres, which is GEL43.910 million in money expression (about US$24 million), a jump of 10.102 million litres year-on year. In 2004, the reported beer production level was 40.762 million litres (GEL34.838 million). The Georgian annual average beer production increase is 15%, The Union of Russian Brewers reported May 31.

There were 15 breweries in 2005 in Georgia releasing 32 brands.

The volume of imported beer has fallowed the same increasing trend. According to 2004 figures, Georgian beer importers have brought into their country 3.361 million litres of beer (US$2.250 million). In the 2005, imports of beer reached 9.257 million litres for an amount of US$5.257 million. During the first three mounts of 2006, Georgia imported 1.084 million litres of beer (US$590,000).

Presently more than 80% of the beer domestic market is being controlled by local beer producers. Imported beer satisfies 15% of Georgian beer-drinkers’ tastes. It is important to note that last year imported beer’s share of Georgian market totaled more than 9%, while in 2004 it was near 5%.

Estonia: Saku Õlletehase AS released its financial results of Q1 2006

Estonia’s largest brewery Saku Õlletehase AS said its beverage sales for the first quarter of 2006 totalled 15.48 million litres, 656,000 litres or 4.4% up on the corresponding period in 2005. Revenue amounted to EEK 125.1 million (€7.9 million), an EEK 15.6 million (€997,000) or 14.2% improvement compared to a year ago, the company released May 31.

The growth resulted, above all, from larger beer sales and a rise in profitability.

"Saku Õlletehase AS ended the first quarter with strong results: our beers expanded their market share and the company's profitability improved. We have succeeded in implementing our strategy through systematic enhancement of the product range and consistent reduction of the cost base. We have launched new and reduced the share of less profitable products and have rationalised our logistics structure," said Acting Chairman of the Management Board Janno Veskimäe in his commentary on the company's first quarter results.

Expenses for the quarter totalled EEK 113.7 million (€7.2 million), EEK 8.3 million (€531,000) or 7.9% up on the same period in 2005. Canada: Labatt Breweries rolls out its own version of Brahma

Molson Coors Brewing Co. couldn't get anyone to drink its Brazilian import, but that hasn't stopped Labatt Breweries of Canada from rolling out its own version this spring, The Canadian Business posted June 01.

Now available from Quebec westward, Brahma supposedly fills a gaping hole in Labatt's lineup: an "international player in clear glass," says spokesman James Villeneuve. Apparently, beers are no longer categorized by style or price, but by bottle colour and location. That's understandable, since Brahma doesn't exactly offer an exotic taste explosion. Indeed, Labatt seems proud that Brahma, the world's sixth-best-selling beer, has a "clean flavour" and "no aftertaste." In that respect, Brahma isn't much different than A Marca Bavaria, Molson's Brazilian experiment, but the similarities end there.

Molson tried selling A Marca Bavaria using a tacky soft-porn television ad that boasted "there are no sins below the equator." It also positioned the beer as "super premium," even though it was clearly neither of those things — especially in Brazil, where it is considered a poor man's brew. Of course, this is the same company that believes its own Canadian brand deserves the "premium" designation.

World: Beer industry to be focused on brand identity

The aggressive consolidation within the global beer industry continued apace in 2005, with SABMiller’s acquisition of Grupo Empresarial Bavaria leading a host of takeovers. Although this trend is expected to continue, the pace should be more relaxed during 2006. With this in mind, strengthening brand identity could now become a priority for the leading brewers, Canadean analysts announced June 01.

According to a brand new report from leading beverage industry analysts Canadean, Anheuser-Busch boasts the two largest brands by volume, but the strength of Bud Light and Budweiser lies mainly in the USA. Only Heineken can be regarded as a truly ‘global’ brand and sits firmly at the centre of the Dutch brewer’s business.

Strong branding and a unique on-trade pump have helped Scottish & Newcastle lead the way in the ‘Super-Chilled’ segment. Within 18 months of its launch, some 50,000 ‘condensation’ pumps were installed in the UK alone delivering Foster’s, Kronenbourg Blanc, John Smith’s Extra Cold and Strongbow. InBev’s ‘Big Chill’ campaign is among the competing offerings.

France: Schutzenberger brewery legally closed

The Appeal Court of Colmar confirmed the legal closure of the Schutzenberger brewery in Schiltigheim, local media provided June 01. According to Court’s decision, it was improper to envisage any serious investment in equipment because it was estimated technically out of date.

Established in 1740, the Schutzenberger brewery has seen its production falling in five years from 200,000 down to 100,000 hectolitres and its annual turnover from EUR15 million to EUR10 million. It was until recently the only wholly independent Alsatian brewery along with Meteor and Hochfelden.

EU: Malt production costs are to increase this year, analysts said

According to recent specialty reports on malt production, the European malt market is undergoing serious changes. And there are victims to be listed among market actors who find themselves affected by such severe market conjuncture.

Following the example of Weissheimer, IMC (International Malting Cooperation) had expressed its willingness to abandon the problematic European malt market. This strategy is likely to result in closing its Northern France, Lille 150,000 t malt capacity factory and to inspire upcoming closures of malt facilities in France and other EU countries.

Nevertheless, European malt demand of 8.1 million t is satisfied by a nearly equal malt supply, or recent estimates say that further malt production facilities closures will balance malt production capacities and malt needs through eliminating excess capacities caused by the building of new factories and declining export opportunities. Exports of malt are steadily growing despite significant fall to Russia, reports say. Exports of malt to other regions represented a growth incentive, as the 2005/2006 exports campaign demonstrated.

USA: Researchers say hops might be effective in the prevention of cancer

About ten years ago, Oregon State University researchers took an interest in hops. In particular, the flavonoid compound xanthohumol found in hops. Although xanthohumol was first discovered almost 100 years ago, no one was aware of the possible health benefits of the compound, The Cancer Blog released May 31.

In the last ten years, Fred Stevens, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry in OSU's College of Pharmacy, as well as a Linus Pauling Institute researcher - with a team of researchers - have been able to determine that hops might be effective in the prevention of cancer.

In the latest published research paper, the researchers are stating that beer looks promising in prostate cancer prevention and prevention of prostate enlargement. Before you get excited at the prospect that drinking beer is cancer prevention, according to the research, you would need to drink more than 17 beers to consume the same amount used in the study. Polyphenols and Pyrazines
in Beer During Aging

Abstract:
Concentrations of 18 polyphenols and 13 pyrazines in aging bottled beer were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with a reverse phase octadecyl-silica (/*-Bondapak®Ci8) column. Ten to 50 v\ of beer could be directly applied to the column and assayed. Most polyphenols decreased during storage for up to 84 days, but vanillic acid and epicatechin remained constant, and catechin and chlorogenic acid increased markedly. Quercetin was the polyphenol in largest quantity, followed by catechin. Pyrazines were monitored for 56 days' storage. Most levels decreased quickly during the first 48 hr. During the latter half of storage, increases were found in 2-methylpyrazine, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, and 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine, but the remaining pyrazines did not change markedly after five days' storage. No significant changes were observed during storage of frozen beer or of lyophilized beer. No measurable loss in pyrazines occurred during lyophilization. The simple assay procedure has ready application for monitoring these compounds in beer stored under commercial conditions. Key words: Flavor-active compounds, HPLC, Storage changes
