Brewery News
Uzbekistan: Next stop for BBH: Tashkent

Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) is to invest in a new brewery in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The move into Uzbekistan is in line with BBH’s strategy of entering into emerging markets, the company released June 08.

Uzbekistan has a population of 27 million, a growing economy and increasing levels of beer consumption (annual consumption ca 10 litres per capita). The domestic beer market has developed positively over the past couple of years and BBH believes that it has the potential to grow strongly in the future.

The brewery will be operational by the spring of 2007, and will have an initial capacity of 1 million hectolitres per annum, with the ability to increase production subject to demand. BBH will team up with a local partner in Uzbekistan, Sarbast Plus, and will hold a share of 75.1%. The total investment is EUR 50 million.

Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) is a 50:50 owned joint venture between Carlsberg A/S and Scottish & Newcastle plc. BBH operates 18 breweries in six countries in Eastern Europe, including Russia where it is the market leader with a 35% market share.

Laos: The battlefield of beer titans APB and Carlsberg

The stage has been set for another foreign beer battle in Southeast Asia. This time around, Laos is the battlefield of choice for Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) - partly owned by Heineken - as they plan to mount a serious challenge to the Danish beer giant Carlsberg, ScandAsia announced June 08.

APB, which already own 26 Asian breweries, have announced that they plan to build a brand new brewery in Laos. This specific expansion move is part of APB's ambitions to become the leading brewery in the entire Asia Pacific region. Their most famous brand is the beer "Tiger", which is sold in more than 60 countries.

With this newly-announced competition, Carlsberg will soon find out if their strong dominance on Laos' foreign beer market is strong enough to resist such an attack. The Danish brewery group owns 50 per cent of the shares in Lao Brewery Company, while the national government owns the other half. The overall beer consumption in Laos makes up about 15 liters per person each year. In Denmark, the number is 90 liters per person.

Singapore: JP Morgan supports ThaiBev stock after IPO

J.P. Morgan bought nearly 20 million shares in Thai Beverage to stabilise the firm's stock price, the investment bank said June 07, more than one week after the Thai firm's disappointing initial public offering, Reuters communicated June 07.

J.P. Morgan, which managed the S$1.37 billion ($865 million) stock market listing together with Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch, said in a statement it bought 19.7 million shares at between S$0.255 and S$0.26 each.

The stock closed 1.9 percent lower at S$0.26 after hitting a record-low of S$0.25 earlier in the session, nearly 11 percent below its IPO issue price of S$0.28, while Singapore's Straits Times Index hit its lowest level in five months and ended the day 1.45 percent lower.

ThaiBev stock fell more than 7 percent below its issue price on its debut on May 30 as cautious investors questioned the value of Singapore's biggest share offering in more than a decade amid turmoil in global financial markets.

ThaiBev's IPO was the city-state's biggest since Singapore Telecommunications' S$4.2 billion offer in 1993.

Thailand's largest brewer and distiller, known for its Chang Beer and Mekhong whisky, sought a Singapore listing for 20 percent of the firm after failed attempts to go public at home, where it ...

Vietnam: APB marks South Vietnam Brewery successful completion of a 50% increase in capacity

Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) unveils its expanded brewery in South Vietnam June 08 in a ceremony that marks the successful completion of a 50% increase in capacity from 1.5 million hectolitres to 2.3 million hectolitres, the company released June 08. Being equipped with the capacity of another 800,000 hectolitres per annum allows Vietnam Brewery Limited (VBL), which had been operating at full capacity, to further strengthen the leadership positions of both Tiger and Heineken beers in Vietnam's premium beer market. APB owns a 60% stake in VBL.

Said Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB, "Heineken beer has been consistently delivering double-digit growth and is clearly heading the league of the premium beers in Vietnam. Also, our sales volume for Tiger beer in Vietnam is the largest as compared to any other country in the world. Heineken and Tiger beers together dominate the Vietnam premium beer segment with 85% market share. In the past decade, APB has invested strongly in growing the brands to reach the status where they are today. With the additional capacity now in place at VBL, it will make it technically feasible for us to continue to build on the success of these brands by ...

The Netherlands: Heineken outlines plan for future growth

Dutch brewer Heineken outlined a five-point plan for profit growth to help offset sluggish western European beer markets and the effects of a weak dollar, Reuters announced June 09.

The world's fourth-largest brewer highlighted that it aimed to improve performance in its most profitable market, the United States, and in its biggest market by volume, Russia, where its long-term aim is to grab a 20 per cent share.

Heineken Chief Financial Officer Rene Hooft Graafland said the plan included expanding its eponymous beer brand, raising the level of innovation, launching its premium light beer in the United States, increasing its Russian presence and cutting costs.

"We are absolutely confident we are on track to reach these targets. If we focus on these five things, you will see a different company in three years' time," he told Reuters in an interview during a group investor conference in Spain.

Graafland admitted Heineken's growth in sales, margins and underlying profits had slowed over the last three years.

He also said the appointment of Chief Executive Jean-Francois van Boxmeer last October had brought a new sense of urgency to speed up growth and cut costs. The brewer is already the world's most profitable in terms of profit per hectolitre ...

Russia: Chelyabinsk brewery “Vena” doubles production capacities

Cheliabinsk brewery “Vena” has organized large festivities dedicated to the inauguration of new production capacities on June 08, which will allow the company to double production of non-alcohol beer to 4.5 million hl of beer per year. “Baltika” brewery which now is proceeding with its merge with “Vena”, “Pikra” and “Yarpivo” will send its top-managers to attend to this event. Inheriting the name and the tradition of a 1872 brewery, “Vena” is our days one of the leading brewers in North-East and Ural regions.

Continuing the production of traditional well known in this region brands like “Uralskii Master”, “Chelyabinskoe” and “Tri Tolstyaka”, the brewer is starting to brew beer from “Baltika” and “Yarpivo” brand portfolio, including “Baltika №0 Non-alcoholic”, “Arsenalinoie”, “Leningradskoe”, “Jiguliovskoie” and “Yarpivo”. The brewer intends to begin production of 32 new items in 2006.

The brewery has spent US$38 investing in increasing production power. Company’s experts estimate that invested sums will be returned in 2.5 years. In the meantime, investments are still to be put in this project: some US$9 are to be invested in company’s logistics, production and quality development projects. On overall, during the last 6 years, investments for modernization and reconstruction of “Vena” brewery exceeded US$93.

Belarus & Russia: “Baltika” is likely to participate in “Belsolod” reconstruction

Belarus Government made a call on Baltika Brewing Company to participate in the reconstruction and the modernisation of Belarusian “Belsolod”. Previously, the Belarusian Prime-minister Sergey Sidorskii affirmed it was ready to offer to the Russian brewery a production ground for the investment projects accomplishment, The Union of Russian Brewers communicated June 07.

Experts estimated this initiative can be envisaged as a possible oncoming join progress for “Baltika” and “Krinitsa”. In the mean time, it appeared that Belarusian authorities are asking the Russian brewer for money aiming to reconstruct and expand the malting facility. “Baltika” officials said that “Belsolod” is offering a potential interesting investment ground, among other possible investment projects. Analysts estimate “Baltika” can be interested enough to invest in the malting facility only if it is provided with a control stake in “Krinitsa”. Otherwise, the Russian brewer won’t get any substantial advantage in conquering the Belarusian market.

“Baltika” press-service confirmed that Belarusian side did make an offer to participate in the reconstruction and the modernization of open society “Belsolod”. ”During the Baltika’s heads visit to Belarus in mid-May this year, the Belarusian Government has expressed the willing to have “Baltika” participating in “Belsolod” reconstruction process. EU: Malting barley prices are to grow strongly

Relying on average yields and qualities, analysts display a general concern over the malting barley situation in EU. Experts estimate EU surplus of spring malting barley will decrease by nearly 500,000 tones. Reports say the situation is to remain difficult even if US dollar weakness attenuates the competitiveness of exports to non-European countries (China, Russia, and Colombia). Besides, sowing of the spring yield has been delayed because of bad weather conditions.

Eastern Europe is demonstrating growing appetite for Western Europe malting barley. Combined to that, the likely unstable European continental climate may lead to a superior Eastern Europe countries demand for imports from their Western neighbours, which are currently the only eventual supplier for this region.

A closer look to the global grain market evolution in the forthcoming years, including the market for malting barley, conducts to an important general revaluation. Accordingly, there are some conflicting trends which directly or subsequently act over the global grain market evolution. Among them: the evidence of fast growing world population, the extension of cultivable areas which are turned over to the fast-growing market in energy-crops (biethanol, biogas, biodiesel), high energy costs and subsidies given to industries which provide renewable energy sources. In result, large ...

UK: Update to malting barley approved list: harvest 2006

The Malting Barley Committee has held its Spring 2006 meeting to discuss the progress of new varieties within the testing system. The outcome was the removal of approval for brewing use for Fanfare, Chalice and Decanter, the promotion of Flagon and NFC Tipple to Full Approval for brewing use, the promotion of Oxbridge to Full Approval for distilling use and Westminster to Provisional Approval 2 for brewing use and the promotion of Appaloosa to Provisional Approval 1 for distilling use.

Appaloosa - Spring variety successfully completing micromalting trials from crop 2005 is listed at Provisional Approval 1 for distilling use. Commercial scale malting and distilling trials will be undertaken from crop 2006.

Commercial scale malting and brewing trials have been performed on Westminster from crop 2005, but insufficient brewing data is available at this time to promote beyond Provisional Approval 2.

Scientific Digest
Producing a Quality Malt from Hulless Barley
M.J.Edney and B.G.Rossnagel, Grain Research Laboratory, Canadian Grain Commission, Winnipeg, MB, Canada Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada

Abstract:
The significantly higher levels of extract from hulless barley malt offer tremendous economic potential for the brewery. In the past this advantage has been negated by a need for intact hulls to act as a filter bed in the lautering process. New technologies for spent grain separation, such as pressure mash filters and centrifugation, have increased interest in hulless barley malt. Another concern has been the potential for embryo or acrospire loss during malting due to the missing protection of the hull, and low malt friability was thought to be an indication of such loss. However, research with the Canadian hulless variety, CDC Dawn, indicated that poor friability values were not explained by embryo loss. The Calcofluor test showed that modification had reached the distal end in over 90% of the kernels. Inadequate malting conditions were then postulated as a cause of poor friability possibly due to higher percentages of ß-glucan and protein in hulless barley. Improved friability results were obtained when steep-out moistures or germination times were increased, but values still did not reach the commercially acceptable range. However, the use of hammer mills in preparing malt for new separation technologies will reduce the need for as high a level of malt friability and the commercial use of hulless barley malt with its high extract levels will be possible.
