Brewery News
South Korea: Carlsberg sells remaining stake in Hite Brewery

Danish brewing giant, Carlsberg A/S, announced on June 13 the placement in the market of its 13.1% stake in Hite Brewery Ltd. Co. South Korea (“Hite”). Carlsberg has effectively sold 2,523,251 shares for a net cash consideration of approximately DKK 1.3 bn. Following the sale of the shares a pre tax gain of approximately DKK 600 m will be booked as a special item.

Following completion of this sale Carlsberg ends a seven year long and value creating involvement as a minority shareholder in Hite. This divesture is consistent with Carlsberg’s on-going commitment to free-up invested capital from minority positions where there is no clear path to control.

The profit after tax from this transaction will be approximately DKK 440 m. This was not included in the financial outlook for 2006 as stated most recently in the first quarter report dated 10 May 2006. Consequently, the gain from the sale of the shareholding leads to Carlsberg raising expectations for 2006 net profit to approximately DKK 1.65 bn.

Hite Brewery (000140.SE) last down 6.3% at KRW89,500 on the news, according to Dow Jones Newswires. "The stake sale will pressure Hite shares for a while as investors who bought the shares at the ...

China: InBev closes acquisition of Fujian Sedrin Brewery in China

InBev announced the completion of its acquisition of Fujian Sedrin Brewery Co. Ltd. in China, ahead of the originally anticipated completion date of end 2006. With all the necessary regulatory approvals obtained, InBev Sedrin, a wholly foreign owned enterprise, has now been duly established. InBev paid RMB 5,886 million (equivalent to EUR614 million) for a 100% stake in Fujian Sedrin. The acquisition further consolidates InBev’s leadership position in southeast China.

The accelerated closing of this transaction allows the InBev group to realize the benefits from synergies earlier than originally anticipated.

Combined with InBev’s existing operations in China, this transaction positions InBev as one of the largest brewers in China with 36 million hl volumes sold in 2005 and a leading presence in the affluent southeastern part of China.

InBev China has operations in 8 provinces: Guangdong, Hebei, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangxi. With this acquisition, the Sedrin® brand becomes InBev’s fifth largest brand globally by volume.

InBev is a publicly traded company based in Leuven, Belgium. The company's origins date back to 1366, and today it is the leading global brewer by volume. InBev’s strategy is to strengthen its local platforms by building significant positions in the world's major beer ...

Italy: Beer industry hopes for better regime of taxation

The Beer and Malt Industrialists Association (AssoBira) is hoping for a sign that the policies of the previous government on the suggestion of measure to correct public finances, will be dropped, Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (AGI) communicated June 12.

The sector is hoping that the regime of taxation on beer can be adjusted to levels in line with the average in continental European countries. Since 2004, reads a statement, the Italian beer industry has already been damaged by as many as three increases in taxed that have led to an increase in tax on the product of 68pct, one of the highest tax rates in the EU.

The current level of tax is in fact at around 2/3 times above the one in force in countries that are the bog producers of beer, being Germany Spain and France. In the face of these increases in prices, caused by the increases in tax since 2004, the positive trend of sales in beer in Italy has been interrupted.

The strong contraction in sales in public outlets has reduced the VAT income for the treasury thereby frustrating general increases in tax. In the first four months of 2006 sales went down by 5pct. "Compare to ...

Russia: "Heineken" expects to seize 20 % of Russian beer market

Dutch brewing company "Heineken" intends to get its control over more than 20 % of the Russian beer market and plans to lead re-structuring of its assets in Russia, and even to close some of its factories. The company has already accepted a development strategy which stipulates the expansion of basic brands manufacturing, a general pro-innovation approach, the increase of Russian beer market share, the improvement of USA operations efficiency and the reduction of costs, The Union of Russian Brewers communicated June 09.

As "Heineken" financial director Rene Grafland has declared, the company expects "to be on the first or second place, or at least on a strong third place. Our 14 % share of the market represents a good base for further growing. In long-term prospect we should increase our market share at least up to 20 %. We are absolutely sure that we shall reach these purposes... You will see in next three years a completely changed company, "- he said. It is supposed that expansion of "Heineken" beer manufacture will improve company’s activity financial results, as it gives the company about 40 % of profit at a twice smaller share in total amount of sales.

Japan: May 'happoshu' low-malt beer shipments up 1st time in 22 months

Shipments of "happoshu" low-malt beer from Japan's five top brewers in May grew 1.8 percent from a year earlier for the first upturn in 22 months, industry figures showed June 12. Shipments by Kirin Brewery Co., Asahi Breweries Ltd., Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Suntory Ltd. and Orion Breweries Ltd. came to a total of 11.26 million cases, according to the Brewers Association of Japan and the brewers. One case holds 20 633-milliliter glass bottles.

With the introduction of a new, so-called third-category non-malt beer-like drink, Asahi apparently regained the position as top shareholder in the market for beer and beer-like drinks from Kirin in May for the first time in five months.

The overall market totaled the equivalent of 38.93 million cases, up 0.3 percent for the first rise in two months.

Shipments of third-category beer tumbled 20.6 percent to the equivalent of 4.96 million cases, the first year-on-year fall since the debut of such drinks in September 2003.

Shipments of regular beer came to the equivalent of 22.7 million cases, a rise of 5.6 percent, on brisk demand for high-quality beer and beer for large-lot customers.

Malt News
EU: More business for malt of crop 2006 has been concluded

More business for malt of crop 2006 for delivery 2007 has been concluded, mainly in Germany, market analysts revealed in a statement on June 2.

Reported prices ranged from EUR 270.00 to 280.00, delivered breweries. The large European groups have abstained from buying yet, or started to cover part of their demand from domestic maltsters, e.g. in South Germany and Poland. The price increase of EUR 30.00/40.00 from last year and the unresolved situation of Weissheimer are delaying many purchase decisions.

Denmark & Sweden: Prices for malting barley to increase in 2007

Malting barley growers from Scandinavia are facing a dramatic weather change. A long drawn cold spell (from beg. May till June 08) has now been broken by what looks to become a heat wave 27 deg C measured In Denmark as well as in Sweden, H. Abildstrom & Co. ApS stated in its “Scandinavian Malting Barley No/05” release of June 12. This is good for the crops unless it continues for too long time. Subsoil moisture is adequate and the inhomogene appearance around the Zadoks 32-39 will soon make way for more even conditions. As reported before tillering was good in most places and the farmers who were sowing early in Denmark and
South Sweden will most probably witness ear-forming during the next few days driven by the “turbo” heat.

The later sown fields in the areas mentioned do not look so good. Many farmers lost patience during the cold and rainy period and were drilling very wet fields. This is clearly visible today where the structure of the soil can be read by the development of the plants (yellow stripes with very short plants.) General conclusion DK and Sweden: so far rather good. The early sown is developing “up to timetable” ...

Australia & Japan: Sapporo Brewery committed to Australian malting barley ingredients

For discerning Japanese consumers the integrity and quality of products they purchase is of paramount importance, which is why brewing company Sapporo embraces a painstaking quality assurance program. Japanese consumers drink about 50 litres of beer per head per annum, compared with a consumption of 90 litres per head per annum in Australia, and Japan is the seventh greatest producer of beer in the world, The Northern Argus posted June 07.

Sapporo supply chain management division general manager Dr Kensuke Oogushi has been a regular Australian visitor since 1993, talking to growers involved in the company's barley traceability program – "from paddock to bottle".

Mr Oogushi said the traceability program was used as a strong marketing tool in Japan: "We understand that our customers like to know where our barley and hops are grown and who grows it and how it is grown," he said. "We ask our growers to keep a diary of chemicals used, seed treatments and past history of paddocks."

As a promotional exercise last year 200,000 barley stalks from the Gilbert Valley were harvested, tied into sheaves and carefully packed for despatch to Japan, where they were used in supermarket displays to promote Sapporo's product.

Behavior of Lipid Hydroperoxides During Mashing
Naoyuki Kobayashi, Hirotaka Kaneda, Yukinobu Kano, and Shouhei Koshino, Brewing Research Laboratories, Sapporo Breweries Ltd., 10 Okatohme, Yaizu-Shi, Shizuoka, 425 Japan

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 52(4):141-145, 1994
Lipid hydroperoxides such as trilinolein hydroperoxides in barley, malt, and mash were analyzed using a chemiluminescence high-performance liquid chromatography method. During mashing in a laboratory mash bath, the hydroperoxides increased for a short time just after mashingin but soon gradually decreased. The increasing peaks of lipid hydroperoxide production occurred before those of the free fatty acid hydroperoxides. The malt with higher lipoxygenase activity produced more lipid hydroperoxides during mashing. This study confirms the contribution of malt enzymes such as lipoxygenase and lipase to lipid oxidation and clarifies the lipid oxidation mechanism during mashing. Keywords: Chemiluminescence-HPLC, Hydroperoxides, Lipase, Lipid, Lipid oxidation mechanism, Lipoxygenase
