Brewery News
Australia & China: Foster's sells Shanghai brewing business

Foster's Group Limited (Foster's Group) agreed June 15 to sell its Shanghai brewing business and local Chinese beer brands to Suntory Limited for an undisclosed amount, the company released June 15.

Foster's Group retains ownership and distribution rights for Foster's Lager (and its other international beer brands) in China and is committed to developing the brand in China and the high growth Asian markets.

The transaction is unconditional and is expected to complete on Tuesday, 20 June 2006.

Foster’s Group in China

Foster's Group entered the Chinese market in 1993, acquiring majority stakes in the Shanghai, Guangdong and Tianjin breweries, Foster's Group sold the Guangdong and Tianjin breweries in 1999.

The Foster's Shanghai brewery was originally built in 1935 and has undergone two significant capacity and technology upgrades, the first in 1987 and the second in 1997. With production capacity of 1 million hectolitres, the brewery produces the Shanghai Lager, Guangming, Qing Yi, Yi Hao and has been brewing the Foster's Lager brand since 1997.

The Foster’s Brand

First brewed in 1888 by the Foster brothers in Melbourne, Australia, Foster's Lager is one of the world's best beers. As one of only a handful of truly global beer brands, Foster's in now available in ...

UK: Nottingham Hardys & Hansons is to be taken over by Greene King for £270 million

Another historic brewer looked set to be taken over June 15, after Greene King unveiled a £270 million deal for 174-year-old Hardys & Hansons, This is Money posted June 15.

The deal brings the number of pubs Greene King owns close to 2,700 and crucially brings its estate closer to the territory dominated by arch rivals Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, which was also believed to be in the race to acquire H&H.

H&H owns 268 pubs located throughout the East Midlands, with 83 managed houses and 185 tenanted sites.

Announcing the agreed takeover, Rooney Anand, chief executive of Greene King said: "We believe this is a fair offer for Hardys & Hansons, a company we have long admired for its high quality estate, strong management team, dedicated staff and heritage."

The offer was consistent with Greene King's strategy to deliver shareholder value by "augmenting our organic growth with selective acquisitions that improve the overall quality of the group", he added.

James Muir, chairman of Hardys & Hansons, said the offer "represents excellent value for our shareholders and Greene King represents an excellent home for the business."

According to a source close to deal, the board directors and family shareholders of H&H "couldn't believe they could have ...

Ukraine: Beer industry unveils its January-May 2006 leaders

“Obolon” and “SUN Interbrew” were the incontestable leaders of the Ukrainian beer market following the first 5 months of 2006. Sales have shown a year-on-year grown of 30.22% for “Obolon”, 12.8% for “SUN Interbrew” and 7% for “Sarmat”, the companies released.

During the same period, “Obolon” has brewed 3.36 million hl of beer, increasing beer production by 24.2%. “Sarmat” amplified beer production by 18% up to 1.14 million hl of beer.

“SUN Interbrew” is the second brewing company in Russia and the largest brewer in Ukraine. Its local affiliates are “Desna” (Chernigov), “Rogan” (Kharkov) and “Yantari” (Nikolaev).

“Sarmat” clusters 5 local brewing companies. 99% of “Sarmat” shares are owned by “System capital management” from Donetsk.

Bulgaria: Beer sales gain 16% in January-May 2006

Beer sales jumped by 16.5% month-on-month to 535,574 hectoliters in May, according to data released by the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria (UBB), Dnevnik communicated June 13.

The market expanded by 14.7% year-on-year in May. The local beer makers tallied sales of 1.65 mln hl for January-May 2006, up 16.6% year-on-year. The UBB data is inconclusive because it does not reflect the performance of locally-owned brewer Ledenika&MM.

Kamenitza AD, owned by Belgium's InBev, the world's biggest brewer by volume, had a marginal lead on Zagorka in May, moving 174,743 hectoliters versus 173,685 hectoliters for its Heineken-owned rival.

Zagorka, in turn, leads Kamenitza in the January-May sales rankings by 500 hectoliters.
Carlsberg Bulgaria is a solid third-placer both in the May and in YTD sales charts.

Russia: Prohibition of wine imports from Moldova and Georgia boosted beer sales

According to “Bussines Analytica”, the Russian beer market has shown the lowest growth in 2005 – only by 6%. In such circumstances, brewers increase the turnover by taking away market shares from competitors rather than by increasing the number of beer consumers, The Union of Russian Brewer said June 13. “Baltika” Chairman Anton Artemiev anticipates important changes in the Russian beer market, which are explained by mutations in brand portfolios and the withdrawal of some important market players.

“After prohibiting wine imports from Moldova and Georgia, beer sales were evidently boosted,“ Artemiev said. “Hence, according to our April statistics, we estimate a market growth of nearly 6%, which is not bad at all.”

“I remember there were rumors about “Efes” intending to sell its Russian business, but these were just rumors.” Artemiev said. “Anyway, we do not afford to ignore the fact that theoretically this could happen. There are some big international breweries, like Anheuser-Busch, which are less active in Russia. The American brewer has even sold the rights to brew Budweiser to Heineken. We believe at one moment they could express the desire to acquire a big Russian brewer. In addition, there is still a big question about ...

Malt News
EU: Malting industry: optimistic prospects to face rough production statistics

EU malt exporters booked malt export licences for 1.978 million t from July 1, 2005, until May 30, 2006. That number is still 60,000 tons less than the bookings on the same date last year. If fixations continue at the average pace of the crop year, we would achieve total exports of 2.140 million t in 2005/06. This figure is larger than anticipated. It means that the drop in exports to Russia has almost been compensated by shipments to other destinations, which gives hope for continuous exports in future years. Of course, risks are also numerous, new capacities in Argentina, the expansion of Mercosur, FTA’s between Australia and S.E. Asian countries.

Analysts have adjusted their balance of malt S/D in the EU as follows:

EU malt capacity on June 1, 2006:

Usage for beer production 5.32 million t
Usage for whisky 450,000 t
Usage for food 200,000 t
Malt export 2.2 million t
Total: 8.17 million t

In theory it means that 93.1 % of existing capacity will be used. The reality will be different. Production statistics show that France, Germany and the U.K. have produced less malt than total capacity. In France and the U.K. further closures are rumoured. Two Hungarian maltings have not worked ...

Barley News
USA: American Malting Barley Association develops Craft, a new malting variety

The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) funds research aimed at the development of new malting varieties for its members. The newly developed Craft malting barley variety is particularly suited to the production of all-malt beers, the association released June 12.

This two-rowed malting barley was developed by Dr. Tom Blake, Montana State University, with support from AMBA and the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee. It was bred to incorporate the excellent flavor profile and malting characteristics of the variety Klages into a high yielding variety capable of competing with today’s malting and feed varieties.

Careful selection has led to Craft, which is well adapted to the fertile barley growing regions of the western US including the Golden Triangle region of Montana and intermountain valleys. It has produced bright, plump barley in trials to date.

Average yield at 11 Montana locations over 5 years:

Variety / Description / Yield (bu/acre)

Craft / - / 95 (bu/acre)
Harrington / Montana Malt Barley / 87 (bu/acre)
Baronesse / Montana Feed Barley / 97 (bu/acre)

Craft has lower levels of diastatic power and soluble protein. While sufficient for adequate yeast nutrition, the lower level of soluble protein reduces the potential formation of beer hazes resulting from protein complexes.

Craft ...

World: Barley markets will follow the firm trend of other grains in the new crop year

Analysts say that at first sight the world barley balance does not look bullish for the next crop year. Larger crops all over Europe and in North Africa will more than compensate for smaller crops in North America.

Nevertheless, there will be the firm markets of all other grains, lesser availability of feed wheat leading to larger barley consumption, excellent beef markets needing more feed barley in Canada and Australia.

Australia's new crop may become a major factor already in the weeks to come, unless weather conditions improve. Saudi-Arabia is reported to have imported more than 7.5 million t of feed barley in 2005/06, and will need at least the same amount next year. So far official S/D's had put the Saudi demand at maximum 6.5 million t per year.

The larger crop figures come from Spain, Russia and Ukraine, where we also expect a large increase of domestic consumption. And by planting time of winter grains in Europe and North America one may see an effect of expected lower barley crops in 2007. Therefore it is likely that barley markets will follow the firm trend of other grains in the new crop year.

Behavior of Lipid Hydroperoxides During Mashing
Naoyuki Kobayashi, Hirotaka Kaneda, Yukinobu Kano, and Shouhei Koshino, Brewing Research Laboratories, Sapporo Breweries Ltd., 10 Okatohme, Yaizu-Shi, Shizuoka, 425 Japan

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 52(4):141-145, 1994
Lipid hydroperoxides such as trilinolein hydroperoxides in barley, malt, and mash were analyzed using a chemiluminescence high-performance liquid chromatography method. During mashing in a laboratory mash bath, the hydroperoxides increased for a short time just after mashingin but soon gradually decreased. The increasing peaks of lipid hydroperoxide production occurred before those of the free fatty acid hydroperoxides. The malt with higher lipoxygenase activity produced more lipid hydroperoxides during mashing. This study confirms the contribution of malt enzymes such as lipoxygenase and lipase to lipid oxidation and clarifies the lipid oxidation mechanism during mashing. Keywords: Chemiluminescence-HPLC, Hydroperoxides, Lipase, Lipid, Lipid oxidation mechanism, Lipoxygenase
