Brewery News
Australia & India & Vietnam: Australia's Foster's may soon sell India, Vietnam breweries

Australia's Foster's Group Ltd. is expected to soon offload breweries in India and Vietnam, and license out Asian rights to its flagship beer, as part of its international brewing revamp, Reuters communicated July 03.

A sale of the assets and Foster's lager licensing rights could bring in around AU$150 million (US$111 million), some analysts said, as the company allows larger international brewers with greater economies of scale to drive supply of the brand in Asia. The company has sold its Foster's beer brand in Europe to Scottish & Newcastle Plc. and its loss-making China brewery to Japan's Suntory Ltd., leaving the remaining Asian breweries next to be sold.

"It is highly likely as long as they can find a buyer. CommSec analyst Pierre Grobler said. "Our view is that it makes sense for Foster's to take more of an intellectual property approach where they manage the brand and someone else distributes and manufactures it."

Foster's has invested more than AU$100 million in the Vietnam and India breweries since the late 1990s.

Potential bidders for the Asian assets include Singapore-based Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd., 42.5 percent owned by Dutch brewer Heineken and 38 percent by Singapore conglomerate Fraser & Neave.

Japan: Kirin Brewery estimates domestic January-June beer sales climbed 11%

Kirin Brewery Co. estimates that its domestic beer sales in the January-June period climbed about 11% on year to 86 million cases, a company executive said July 03, Dow Jones Newswires released the same day.

Senji Miyake, president of Kirin's beer, wine and spirits division, told a group of reporters that the company expects its beer sales to have grown on year for the first time in seven years. Miyake traced the double-digit increase to the strength of its hit product, "Kirin Nodogoshi," a low-priced beer it introduced last year.

Nodogoshi is one of several competing products in a new category of beer that Japanese brewers created to get around tax rules. Dubbed "the third beer," Nodogoshi and other rival products take advantage of lower taxes on beer made from non-malt ingredients. The market for such beer in Japan has grown quickly and now makes up about 16% of the entire beer market.
But Miyake declined to comment if Kirin's market share exceeded that of archrival Asahi Breweries.

July 03, at 0407 GMT, Kirin shares were up 1.1% at Y1,818 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

UK: Green King posts £818.6 million revenue for the 52 weeks ended 30/04/06

The 1799 founded British brewer Greene King Plc released July 04 its preliminary results for the 52 week ended 30 April 2006.

Rooney Anand, Greene King chief executive, commented: “There have been significant developments across all areas of Greene King over the last year and this is reflected in these record results. The results demonstrate our proven strategy that delivers value for shareholders. The new financial year has started well and our pubs are also benefiting from the targeted plans that we put in place for the World Cup. The intrinsic quality of our assets, combined with the passion and talent of our team, along with recent acquisitions, give us confidence that there are exciting opportunities to deliver further growth in the future.”

The Chairman reported another year of strong profit growth for the 52 weeks ended 30 April 2006. These results include contributions from Ridley’s, acquired in July 2005 (43 weeks) and Belhaven, acquired in October 2005 (30 weeks). Revenue for the year was up 16% at £818.6m and operating profit increased by 21% to £190.9m. Operating profit margin was therefore 23.3%, up 0.9 percentage points.

Greene King’s profit before tax and exceptional items rose by 25% to £119.6m. Over ...

Poland: The race is on to buy Łomza Brewery

Polish Łomża Brewery (LB), belonging to bourse-listed Pepees, is on sale, the Warsaw Business Journal posted on July 3.

Carlsberg is offering at least zł.125 million for a 100% stake, depending on the results of audit that the company has been conducting in the brewery.

Danish Royal Unibrew is also interested and may announce a call for shares of Pepees. Should Royal Unibrew acquire Łomża Brewery in this way, they would control Strzelec, Brok and Łomża breweries and possess an almost 49% stake in Perła from Lublin.

Unibrew Poland refused to comment on the issue, but Royal Unibrew admits that acquisitions are included in its development plan.

Pepees also has declined to comment on the various reports and promised to inform investors when appropriate. The supervisory board and LB's largest shareholder, Pepees, are inclined to sell out.

Russia: Baltika Breweries becomes the majority owner of Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo

Baltika Breweries (“Baltika”) announced July 04 that it has become the majority shareholder of the Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo breweries, as a result of a share exchange where Baltic Beverages Holding (“BBH”) exchanged its holdings in Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo for newly issued shares in Baltika. Thus the legal merger of Baltika with Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo is progressing according to plan.

Commenting on the share exchange, Baltika President Anton Artemiev said: “We are pleased that the legal merger of Baltika, Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo progresses according to the time schedule and plan we set earlier this year. The Group is now working with full speed to integrate all operations, sales, distribution and administration. The merger confirms Baltika's position as the largest FMCG company in Russia, and one of the largest breweries in the world. A true Russian champion. ”

As per the merger plan, Baltika issued an additional 48,200,000 new shares in spring. During July, the shareholders of Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo are offered the opportunity to exchange their holdings in these companies for shares in Baltika. The exchange ratios were established by the Board of Directors of Baltika, following a valuation by Deloitte, and ...

Last week the Kosovo Trust Agency (KTA) concluded the procedure of purchasing “Peja Brewery”. The buyer, Ekrem Lluka, has paid the amount of EUR 11.1 million. It is now up to the purchaser to conduct the guaranteed investments and employ 600 people. I would like to thank all parties involved, KTA and “Peja Brewery” for all their hard work and devotion to the negotiation of this important transaction. “Peja Brewery” is a well-known and respected entity and I believe that the transaction will enable development and be of great benefit to Kosovo’s economy,” stated the Head of UNMIK Pillar IV in the KTA press release, reported the papers.

According to Lajm, the third wave of privatization included the “Peja Brewery”, “Grand Hotel and “Iliria Hotel”, all of which underwent special spin off. However, KTA has not yet signed the contracts for the latter.

Malt News
Denmark & Finland & Sweden: Despite slow improvement of malt prices, breweries still reluctant to buy

The warmer the weather the more the Scandinavian Malting Barley market gets frozen, H. Abildstrøm & Co ApS said in a report of July 04. In principal nothing fundamental has changed over the last 3 months: barley developed better than feared, malt prices only slowly improving but breweries reluctant to act, general uncertainty in the malt production circles. In result, buyers and sellers increased prices by around € 2.

The last week warm spell created good conditions for barley growers. What looked uneven and with a few yellow leaves developed above expectations in Denmark and south Sweden. In Finland the same weather boosted tillering and made the latest areas easy to drill. Thereafter temperatures became more human around 22-25 in daytime 11-14 night all over the areas and some showers spread minor amounts of rain in DK and south Sweden but a lot in mid Sweden. Then again warm and sunny period which commenced mid last week – thus Denmark, Sweden and the east of Finland would need some more rain within short.

Barley News

Scientific Digest
The Impact of Microorganisms on Barley and Malt Quality - A Review
S. N. E. Van Nierop 2 and M. Rautenbach, Department of Biochemistry, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; B. C. Axcell Department of Microbiology, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; and I. C. Cantrell, Group Brewing Research, SABMiller, South Africa

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 64(2):69-78, 2006 Microbial colonization of the barley plant tissue occurs in the field while the crop is growing. Accordingly, all barley grain/seed will have some microflora, although the amount and type of microorganisms may vary. Barley is one of the major raw materials used for brewing, and microflora on barley has long been associated with a number of quality aspects and brewing issues that form the subject of this review. Specifically, this review will focus on the impact of barley microflora on the malting process and malt quality, wort production and resulting wort quality, the fermentation process and yeast flocculation, and the final product (beer) quality. In addition, we will briefly review antimicrobial factors associated with the microflora of plant tissue (including seeds), specifically focusing on how these factors occur, some typical factors, and their possible impact on brewing.
