Brewery News
China: Heineken part-owned Kingway Brewery to start brewery construction in Chengdu

Heineken part-owned Chinese Kingway Brewery is reported to start building a new brewery in Chengdu, in the south-western province of Sichuan. Plans concerning the new brewery were released earlier in February this year. Accordingly, the brewery’s designed capacity is estimated to 200,000 t, local media released July 07.

About US&50 million are to be invested in brewery construction. Ye Xuguan, Kingway Brewery CEO, said the plant is able to lift capacity by another 200,000 t, depending on the demand.

Japan: Kirin Brewery Co. to post 17% profit rise in H1

Kirin Brewery Co., Japan's second-biggest beer maker, will likely post a 17 percent increase in its half-year operating profit thanks to brisk sales of its low-malt and no-malt beer drinks, the Nihon Keizai business daily reported on July 07, Reuters accordingly reported July 07.

The paper said Kirin was likely to report a group operating profit of around 44 billion yen (US$380 million) for the six months ended June, beating its forecast by some 4 billion yen. If its sales in July and August remain strong, the company may revise up its full-year forecast, it added.

A Kirin spokeswoman said its half-year results were not likely to be too far from the reported figures, but declined to confirm the numbers. The company is scheduled to announce its earnings results for the January-June period on Aug. 10, she said. For the year to December, Kirin had forecast a group operating profit of 117 billion yen, lower than the mean market projection of 125.6 billion yen in a poll of 12 analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Kirin's share in the overall beer market has been inching up with the popularity of its low-malt "happoshu" and no-malt beer-like drink products, while bigger rival Asahi Breweries Ltd. (2502.T: ...

USA: Rumours about Anheuser-Busch and InBev distribution agreement revoked

Rumours about a distribution deal between Anheuser-Busch and InBev USA have been abolished, media provided July 06. Doug Corbett, InBev USA President denied categorically these presumptions by saying that “there is no deal between InBev USA and anyone else. Our priority is to continue to build our relationship with our existing wholesalers.”

InBev is at the origin of a memo which was send to its distributors and which says the following:

“Dear InBev USA Wholesaler:
As many of you are aware there have been many rumors in the marketplace about a potential deal between InBev USA and other companies.

Until now, I have not been in a position to provide the comprehensive answer that you were all looking for. I can now categorically confirm that there is no deal between InBev USA and anyone else. Our priority is to continue to build our relationship with our existing wholesalers.

We firmly believe that our current platform including our people, our import brands and our wholesaler distribution system is the best option for future growth.

While there has been much speculation in the industry, the consumer continues to choose our brands as evidenced by the strong growth of our import portfolio. For instance, Stella Artois is ...

Russia: Heineken cuts 500 jobs in Russia and targets 20% of Russia beer market in forthcoming 5-6 years

Heineken NV said it has recently cut 500 jobs in Russia and is aiming to raise its market share in the Russian beer market to 20 pct in 5 to 6 years, AFX released July 05.

Last year Heineken said that with the acquisitions of the Russian Patra, Stepan Razin, Baikal and Ivan Taranov breweries, its market share in Russia would expand to 14 pct.

The 500 job cuts are a result of the 'integration activities and improvement of efficiency' at the Russian breweries.

Heineken also said it expects to sell more than 13 mln hectolitres of beer in Russia, 1 mln more than in 2005.

The company reiterated its expectation that the Russian operations bought last year will become 'value enhancing in 5 years time'.

Malt News
Germany: Weissheimer Malzfabrik declared again state of temporary insolvency

As reported by market analysts, Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik KG and Weissheimer GmbH placed again the insolvency request at the court of Mayen district in the morning of July 6th 2006. Temporary insolvency administrator is the Koblenzer attorney, Jens Lieser. The maltster has already set an insolvency request in March this year, which has been withdrawn in May after an investor had been found.

According to experts, the latest declaration is motivated by divergences between the maltster and its main creditor, Avangard Bank JSB from Moscow. Avangard Bank became the main creditor of Weissheimer after signing on 25.10.2001 and 28.03.2006 tow concession contracts, regarding liabilities pertaining to a major syndicated loan, with the group of banks which used to be main creditors of Weissheimer.

In the coming weeks the temporary insolvency administrator will again take up the discussions with the prospective customers, who wanted to take over and continue the largest part of the Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik with the first insolvency in March 2006, according to the Company. These discussions stand however under the reservation of the agreement of the Russian principal creditor. The co-workers are informed in a workshop meeting about the further steps in the crisis situation. The temporary ...

World: International brewing groups seeking for malt offers but hardly buying yet

Most of the large international brewing groups, InBev, Heineken, Carlsberg, SABMiller, also African, Brazilian, Venezuelan, Japanese brewers have entered the malt market asking for offers for 2007, analysts reported.

However, hardly anyone bought so far. Malt average prices are € 270.00/€ 280.00 delivered breweries, € 260.00/€ 270.00 FOB seaport in bulk, and € 280.00/€ 290.00 FOB seaport in bulk in container.

Brewers, who had been able to depress malting margins down to levels below € 40.00 per t at the height of the maltsters' crisis, are now faced with price increases averaging € 30.00/€ 40.00 per t, which often is far above their budget numbers. Of course, they are trying to limit the damage, but also realize that maltsters have clear financial limitations.

Another year as 2005/06, and we would have seen a wave of maltsters' failures. The cost of energy and transport has increased substantially during the past 12 months, both factors together put about € 10.00 per t extra on the maltster's calculation. Especially river transport of barley and malt has been affected by the climate change. Low water levels occur more frequently than in former years and lead to freight surcharges and less available freight space.

Hungary: Albadomu Malata Bt. bankruptcy procedures completed

Hungarian courts completed bankruptcy procedures of Albadomu Malata Bt. the week ended July 02, reports said.

The assets of the bankrupt company were sold to the French/Belgian Boortmalt group. According to the Hungarian press, it concerns primarily buildings and machines. Legal proceedings will take a bit longer, as InBev, the former owner of the Bocs malthouse, had a title on the factory in case of the new owners' bankruptcy, and must agree with the court's decision.

Albadomu Malata Bt. located in Dunaujvaros is an affiliate company of the Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik Group. The Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik was established in the year of 1864, in Andernach.

Boortmalt produces about 500,000 t malt in Belgium, France, Croatia and China.

Barley News
EU: Barley intervention stocks increased to 2.3 million t

At the end of the grain year 2005/06 EU barley statistics look disappointing, analyst said. Exports were 2.87 million t vs. 3.47 million t in 2004/05. Intervention stocks increased by 800,000 tons to 2.3 million t in spite of export and domestic sales of 1.7 million t. Exports against “zero refund” licences amounted to 886,000 t. Experts estimate that less than half of that quantity was malting barley.

Scientific Digest
The Impact of Microorganisms on Barley and Malt Quality - A Review
S. N. E. Van Nierop 2 and M. Rautenbach, Department of Biochemistry, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; B. C. Axcell Department of Microbiology, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; and I. C. Cantrell, Group Brewing Research, SABMiller, South Africa

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 64(2):69-78, 2006 Microbial colonization of the barley plant tissue occurs in the field while the crop is growing. Accordingly, all barley grain/seed will have some microflora, although the amount and type of microorganisms may vary. Barley is one of the major raw materials used for brewing, and microflora on barley has long been associated with a number of quality aspects and brewing issues that form the subject of this review. Specifically, this review will focus on the impact of barley microflora on the malting process and malt quality, wort production and resulting wort quality, the fermentation process and yeast flocculation, and the final product (beer) quality. In addition, we will briefly review antimicrobial factors associated with the microflora of plant tissue (including seeds), specifically focusing on how these factors occur, some typical factors, and their possible impact on brewing.
