Brewery News
South Korea: Beer sales declined 1.7% during 1H

Beer sales in South Korea declined in the first six months of the year on an annual basis because of a change in consumers' lifestyles and the continued weakness of the nation's economy, a trade association said July 10, Asia Pulse posted July 10.

A total of 92.61 million boxes of beer were sold in the first half, down 1.7% from the same period of the previous year, according to the Korea Alcohol & Liquor Industry Association. Each box contains 20 500-milliliter bottles.

But beer sales increased 3.7 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively, in May and June, on the back of the World Cup finals in Germany, it said. In the first three months of the year, beer sales fell 6.5 per cent annually.

Beer sales had increased since 2000, when the sales rose 11.29% from the preceding year. The sales gained 8.04% and 2.42%, respectively, in 2001 and 2002.

However, a downturn began in 2003, when sales decreased 3.66 per cent. Last year, sales dropped 4.26 per cent, according to the association.

The association attributed the decrease to more people consuming less alcohol due to health reasons, along with the stagnation of the country's economy.

Amid the decrease, industry leader Hite Co. ...

Latvia: Sales of brewery Cesu Alus up by 20 pct in 1H

Latvia’s second biggest brewery JSC Cesu Alus sold 140,900 hl of beer in 1H, up by 20 pct year-on-year, Dienas Bizness communicated July 11.

In comparison with the same period of year 2004, the sales have increased by 42 pct in 1H of 2006. The biggest increase was registered in June 2006, when JSC Cesu Alus in June sold 52,900 hl of drinks, making a new one-month record sales.

In comparison with the previous month, sales of Cesu Alus production increased by 26 pct in June. If compared with the same period last year, sales of Cesu Alus has increased by 34 pct in June 2006.

Sales of cider and alcopops have increased by 46 pct in 1H of 2006, but sales of soft drinks and juices – by 41 pct year-on-year.

Cesu Alus is owned by Finnish holding OLVI Oyj which is the third biggest beer producer in Finland.

Chile & Argentina: Compania Cervecerias Unidas S.A. (CCU) announced 2Q preliminary consolidated volumes

Compania Cervecerias Unidas S.A. (CCU) reported July 07 preliminary second quarter 2006 consolidated volumes.

According to the preliminary figures, the company's 2Q beer sales in Chile hiked by 20.9% to 865,120 hl. 2006 to date results (1Q+2Q) showed an increase of 12.7% to 2,235,208 hl of beer. Total sales of CCU during 2Q totaled 2,201,437 (+12.0%) hl.

CCU 2Q sales in Argentina ramped by 11.6% to 2,621,048 hl. The preliminary volume breakout shows beer accumulated a share of 407.937hl (+9.1%). Argentina 2006 to date results indicated an upturn of 6.276.468 hl (+8.1%), from which 1,073,954 hl emanated from beer sales.

The company plans to release its consolidated second quarter results by the first week of August.

CCU is a diversified beverage company operating principally in Chile and Argentina. It is the largest Chilean brewer, the second-largest Argentine brewer, the third-largest Chilean soft drink producer, the second-largest Chilean wine producer, the largest Chilean mineral water producer, one of the largest Chilean pisco producers and also participates in the confectionery industry in Chile.

The Company has licensing and/or joint venture arrangements with Heineken Brouwerijen B.V., Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc., PepsiCo Inc., Paulaner Brauerei AG, Schweppes Holdings Limited and Watt’s Alimentos S.A.

France & Germany: Brasseries Kronenbourg in talks with Frankfurter Brauhaus over sale of Champigneulles Brewery

Scottish & Newcastle's French subsidiary, Brasseries Kronenbourg, has entered into exclusive negotiations with Frankfurter Brauhaus about the proposed sale of the Champigneulles Brewery near Nancy, The Scotsman posted July 11.

Last February, S&N, the biggest brewer in France, announced that Kronenbourg was consulting its workforce on the proposed restructuring of its brewing business, including the possible Champigneulles sale. S&N said July 10 that Frankfurter Brauhaus plans to retain up to 100 people at Champigneulles. In addition, a number of employees will be retained relating to the transfer of branded beer production to the Obernai brewery.

The Scottish group said it expected the deal to be struck by the end of August 2006.

Norway: June beer sales boosted by 7.6% year-on-year

Norway Bryggeriforeningen (nationwide brewers' association) said Norwegians chugged 251,000 hl of beer in June. That's quite a bit in a country of just 4.5 million people, and where a glass of beer in a bar or restaurant can cost the equivalent of more than USD 10, Aftenposten communicated July 11.

Overall beer sales were up 7.6 percent compared with June of last year.

Sales of beer in six-pack half-liter cans jumped 30 percent compared to June 2005. Alcohol-free beer also was more popular than last year, with sales up 27.4 percent. Beer sales through the first six months of the year were also up, by 4.4 percent, compared to the first-half of last year.

The brewery association also thinks that beer sales were boosted by the World Cup for soccer, as fans gathered in bars or private homes to watch it over a mug or two. Warm, sunny weather in June clearly helped too.

USA: Organic beer sales start to increase, Anheuser-Busch sees marketability

While organic beer sales are still minuscule in the overall beer industry, they are rising fast. North American sales of organic beers grew from $9 million in 2003 to $19 million in 2005, according to the Organic Trade Association, The Boston Globe posted July 09.

Organic beer has even drawn the attention of the nation's largest beer company, Anheuser-Busch, which is now producing two organic beers of its own. Those beers, Wild Hop lager and Stone Mill pale ale, are being sold in several test markets nationwide.

Cadoux, a Burlington, Massachusetts, resident who founded Peak Organic Brewing Co., says people are embracing organic foods as they become more educated about what they put into their bodies. He views his organic beer, which is brewed in Portland, as a step back to the past.

"Organic is not a new movement," said Cadoux. "Our grandparents grew up eating organic foods, although it wasn't called that."

Organic beer sales increased 40 percent in 2005, tying it with organic coffee as the fastest-growing organic beverage, the Organic Trade Association says. By comparison, overall U.S. beer sales fell slightly last year.

Butte Creek Brewing Co. in Chico, California, sells its organic beers in about 25 states, up from half a ...

Malt News
EU: Maltsters lack stocks to satisfy the unexpected beer boom of World Cup

The soccer world cup and excellent summer weather have created an unexpected beer boom, especially in Germany and the U.K., but even far away and uninvolved countries like Thailand and China talk of a link between soccer and good beer sales.

There will hardly be a long term effect on the beer consumption in the world, however, maltsters enjoy very good call-offs and new sales for this summer.

As reports earlier said, EU maltsters had closed capacities and reduced production in some plants during winter and spring, now many of them lack stocks and capacities to satisfy the demand. Export business and further demand have also been substantial, Africa, Thailand and Venezuela purchased additional malt for 2006.

The situation is further complicated by a long interruption of two factories' production in Hungary, leading to a loss of approx. 90,000 tons of malt stocks for 2006 in Southeast Europe. Last, not least, malting barley of crop 2005 is extremely scarce and expensive.

Barley News
USA: Coors Brewing Company to support premium barley farmers with $36 million investment

Coors will invest $36 million in regional farming communities this year throughout the Rocky Mountains to support the farmers who provide the company with 11 million bushels of its proprietary barley, Grainnet communicated July 11.

More than 700 growers from Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming will produce Coors’ premium barley from 95,000 acres, or 156 square miles, of high-elevation farmland.

“Barley is the most essential raw ingredient for brewing beer, which is why Coors is dedicated to developing the best malting barley possible,” said Steve Rockhold, director of brewing materials for Coors Brewing Company. “Working with regional growers and investing in the development of the optimum malting barley is one important step we take to ensure consumers are getting the great tasting beer they’ve come to expect from Coors,” he added.

More than 30 years ago, Coors began developing its own variety of Moravian barley through tests and studies with local agronomists and research labs.

The resulting strain, a variety-protected two-row barley, produces high yields, is disease resistant and is perfect for brewing beer because of its low protein content, tight but thin husk, uniformly plump kernels and bright colour.

Presently, Coors is the only major brewer in the United ...

China: 2005/06 barley crop estimated at 3.5 million t

USDA and IGC, working with official Chinese figures, estimate the Chinese barley crop at 3.5 million t vs. 3.4 million t last year, experts believe. Winter barley is being harvested now, high moisture, dark colour, 12.5-14 % protein (1 % less than last year). Spring barley will be harvested starting late August.

Crops look fine in Gansu and Xinjiang, while it is too dry in Hebai and Heilongjiang. Better varieties and greater care, especially on state farms, have improved Chinese malting barley over the past years.

Imports of malting barley, expected to be higher every year by the trade, have indeed never risen at the same level as beer production. In January-May 2006 imports were 1.0 million t, forecasts for the whole year range from 2.0 to 2.4 million t. Last year prices of Chinese barley matched prices of imported barley. 2007 crop winter barley from state farms is US $ 10,- per ton cheaper than No. 1 malting barley from Australia, such a discount cannot be attractive for the large seaboard maltsters. As earlier mentioned, the 2005/06 world barley crop is estimated at 147 million t.

IGC estimates the world barley crop at 147 million t vs. 140 million t last ...

Scientific Digest
Determination of the high molecular weight b-glucan content of malt wort by a spectrophotometric method - determination of the accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility
Submitted by F.J.M. Freijee on behalf of the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention.

PRESS REPORT: A new spectrophotometric method for the detennination of the soluble high molecu1ar weight mixed linkage (1,3)(1,4) b-D glucan (b-glucans) fraction present in malt was collaboratively tested by the Analysis Committee ofthe European Brewery Convention according to ISO Standard 5725-2 in order to determine its suitability for publication in Analytica-EBC. At the same time and by using the same samples the fluorimetric method used currently was also collaboratively tested. Accuracy, repeatability r(95) and reproducibility R(95) values are presented. The new spectrophotometric and the fluorimetric method in current use were found to have comparable and acceptable within and between laboratory precision for the detemnination of bglucans. For the new spectrophotometric method, repeatability r(95) and reproducibility R(95) were found to be independent of the mean value and were 28,2 mg/l and 59,4 mg/1 respectively over the range of bglucan tested (88 to 308 mg/l). The new spectrophotometric method using a b-glucan assay kit from NovaBiotec® DT. Fechter GmbH, Berlin, Germany is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC (Method 4.16.3).
