USA: Anheuser-Busch Cos. net sales increased 5.7% for the first six months of 2006

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. (NYSE: BUD) reported July 26 that second quarter 2006 net sales increased 5.9 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding one-time income tax related gains in both 2006 and 2005) increased 9.5 percent, PRNewswire released July 26. For the first six months of 2006, net sales increased 5.7 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding one-time gains in both years) improved 7.4 percent.

"We are off to a good start this year," said Patrick Stokes, president and chief executive officer of the company, "with favorable performances by all of our business segments. Our domestic beer volume momentum continues to be positive into the key summer selling season. We had the largest sales-to- retailers volume in June of any month in the company's history. The domestic beer pricing environment is favorable, and our productivity improvement initiatives are helping mitigate continuing cost pressures. In addition, our international beer segment, led by Grupo Modelo, and our entertainment segment are having outstanding years. Based on these positive factors we are optimistic concerning our sales and earnings outlook for 2006."

Singapore: Heineken buys additional shares in Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd

Singapore's Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), which makes Tiger beer, said July 28 Dutch brewer Heineken has raised its stake in the firm, a day after APB's stock soared nearly 30 percent, Reuters released July 28.

The company said in statement that Heineken International B.V. had increased its direct equity stake marginally to 9.52 percent from 9.29 percent by buying shares on the stock market.

Heineken, the world's fourth-largest brewer by sales, is Asia Pacific Breweries' biggest shareholder with a total 65.1 percent stake. The bulk of the shares are owned indirectly through an investment vehicle named Asia Pacific Investment.

In addition, Singapore publishing-to-real-estate conglomerate Fraser and Neave has a direct holding of 4.77 percent in APB, which was set up as a joint venture between Fraser and Neave and Heineken.

Earlier July 28, APB halted trading in its shares as of 9 a.m. (0100 GMT), pending the announcement. Its shares jumped almost 30 percent July 27 to reach SG$14.20 - the highest level in a year - and nearly 60 percent above levels at the start of the year.

China: Large-scale breweries to pursue competitiveness of scale

Since 2002, when China became the biggest beer producer and seller in the world, the volume of China's beer production and sales has been growing over 6 percent annually in the past near 4 years, China Economic Net released July 28.

At present, the per capita beer consumption of China is close to 22 liters, while it is 30 liters at the average level in the world and 80 liters in Europe and the US. The per capita consumption in China is equivalent to only 1/8 of that in Czech Republic, 1/4 in the US, and 40 percent in Japan.

If the per capita beer consumption of China reaches international level, namely 30 liters, the production scale is expected to achieve almost 40 million tons with a sales revenue of more than 100 billion Yuan. In the face of such an attractive market growing fast, who will have the upper hand in competition between domestic first-tire enterprises led by Yanjing, Tsingtao and China Resources and foreign companies represented by AB, SAB and Carlsberg?

Thailand: Price war brewing as beer sales go flat

Facing a drop in consumption, Singha and Thai Beverage are taking off the gloves. The country's Bt89-billion beer market will see intensifying competition during the rest of the year as brewers scramble to maintain sales during a period when consumption is expected to decline, The Nation released July 27.

Consumption is expected to slow the most among low-income earners, the group least protected from economic difficulties.

To maintain sales, Thai Beverage Plc, the maker of Chang beer, is reportedly launching a fierce marketing campaign for its inexpensive Archa beer, which targets the low end of the market. Archa beer sold to wholesalers and retailers in a bundle with liquors produced by the company. Starting last month, four or five large bottles of Archa have been selling for Bt100.

Somchai Suttikulpanich, senior deputy managing director of Thai Beverage Marketing Co Ltd, denied a tactical pooling system was being used to push sales of Archa beer to its dealers. It is up to individual dealers for the most part to decide how they want to purchase the company's products, Somchai said.

Vietnam: Lao Beer Company to expand production to 2 million hl by 2009

Lao Brewery Company (LBC) which is well known by domestic and foreign drinkers as the symbol of Laos last month was awarded with the gold and silver medals at the 2006 International Quality Competition for Beverages and Foods held in Belgium, Laos News Agency released July 24.

The competition was attended by 71 beverages and foods production companies worldwide.

Managing Director of LBC, Mr Kissana Vongsay said: “All of the medals awarded to the LBC is not a dignity for not only the Lao Brewery Company but its also a dignity of all Lao people, and we should continue to do our best for our country dignity in the future.”

The medals were awarded by Monde Selection International Institute for Quality Selection, which included on Grand Gold Medal award to LBC for Tiger head Drinking Water, another two Gold Medals for Large Beer 330 ml and 640 ml and a Silver Medal for Dark Larger 330 ml.

Beer Lao caused a flutter among beer producers in Russia by being awarded the silver award at the 7th brewery festival in Russia in only its first year of participation.

UK & South Africa: SABMiller plc 1Q lager volumes growing by 7%

At the Annual General Meeting of SABMiller plc (SABMiller) of July 28, Graham Mackay, chief executive, commented on the group’s performance for the three months ended 30 June 2006. The calculation of the organic growth rates included below excludes volumes for South America which became part of the group in October 2005.

Mr Mackay said: “The group continues to make progress, in line with expectations at the time of our preliminary results announcement in May of this year, with first quarter organic lager volumes for the group growing by 7%.

“In South Africa, lager volumes were up 3%, benefiting from the inclusion of an Easter trading period in the first quarter, and our premium brand portfolio continues to show strong growth. Soft drink volumes grew by some 4%.

“In South America, the integration and investment programmes are proceeding as planned. Buoyant trading conditions were experienced across the region and excellent volume performances were recorded by all of our operations, leading to a 9% growth in lager volumes

UK: Carlsberg add brand security from increased malt standards set by the Assured UK Malt scheme

International brewer Carlsberg is reaping the benefits in brand protection from increased malt standards set by the Assured UK Malt (AUKM) scheme. These standards lead the way in world malting and provide regulations on not just food safety, but also product legality, good operational practice and product quality. The quality and traceability of all the brewer’s raw materials is of foremost importance to the protection of the Carlsberg brand and its practices, a philosophy which dates back to the founding of the company in the 19th century.

Ukraine: Malt production 7% up year-on-year in June 2006

Ukrainian maltsters produced 29,000 tones of malt in June 2006, which indicates a drop of nearly 14% against the previous month. Nevertheless, production increased by 7% year-on-year, the Russian Brewers Union announced July 28.

In June, domestic malting plants were stocking 47,300 t of malt, 16% down against May 2006 levels. Ukraine malted 378,200 t of malt during the 2005/06 crop year against 304,600 t year-on-year (+24.16%).

Australia: Growers sharing over AU$39m in 2005/2006 barley pool payments

Barley growers across South Australia and Victoria will begin July 28 receiving second distribution payments for grain they delivered to ABB Grain’s 2005/2006 extended pool and standard loan pools, ABB Grain Ltd released July 28.

The gross value of the distribution will be $35/tonne for malting 1 barley and $65/tonne for feed 1 barley in both South Australia and Victoria. The total value of the gross payments is $39.5 million, of which around $24 million is direct cash payments (all figures in AU$).

The payments represent around 19% of the estimated grower return (EGR) for malting barley, or a total to date of 40%; and 40% of EGR for feed 1 barley, for a total to date of 80%.

The following will be factored into deductions from the above payments: research levies, VFF levies (where applicable), pro rata rail freight (30% malting and 40% feed); bulk handling and belt charges ($6/t for malting, $3/t for feed in both states); malting 3 barley payments in South Australia are subject to quality sliding scale adjustments on Sloop and Schooner which, on this distribution, will be 20% of the scale.

Germany: Hop prices rise in the medium term

Hop acreage continues to decline worldwide. In 2005, only slightly less than 50,000 ha was farmed, over 600 ha less than in the previous year, Barth-Haas Group released July 20.

According to the 2005/2006 Barth Report, hop acreage in the world’s biggest hop growing country, Germany, alone fell by more than 300 ha to 17,161 ha, although the production volume of 34,466 metric tons was slightly positive. Nevertheless, the industry anticipates changes in the market situation in the medium term, which could lead to higher hop prices.

According to Stephan Barth, hop trader and managing partner of Joh. Barth & Sohn in Nuremberg and one of the world’s leading hop marketers, acreage is expected to decrease by a further 400 ha in 2006. In his opinion, the pain threshold has been reached in terms of simply being able to satisfy the 2 – 3 percent annual growth in world beer demand. He expects prices to rise in the medium term, adding that business is already ”very hectic” today. Storage Conditions Affect the Quality of Malting Barley

INTRODUCTION: The effect of storage conditions on the quality of barley is of considerable importance to the barley, malting and brewing industry. Storage can either reduce barley quality (Woods et al. 1994, White et al. 1999), or increase maltability (Woonton et al. 2001). To maximise quality of previously stored barley entering the malt house, the influence of storage environments on post-harvest maturation and changes in malting quality of contemporary Australian barley varieties needs to be better understood. Here we present some preliminary results of a three year project that aims to understand the interaction between storage conditions and barley quality. Samples of the malting barley varieties Stirling, Sloop and Gairdner were selected for storage trials, and stored under controlled conditions. The quality of the grain was then followed using germination tests, kernel colour measurements, enzyme analysis, Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) tests and malting quality analysis.
