India: SABMiller acquires Foster for US$120 million

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced August 04 it has entered into an agreement to acquire a 100% interest in Foster’s India for a consideration of US$120 million on a cash-free debt-free basis, subject to certain conditions being fulfilled. Under the terms of the agreement, SABMiller will assume ownership of all Foster’s assets in India including the Foster’s brand in the territory.

Foster’s India currently operates one brewery based in Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra with a licenced annual capacity of 350,000 hectolitres. The company produces, distributes and supports Foster’s Lager, Amberro Mild and Amberro Strong beer brands in the Indian market. In the year ended 30 June 2006, total beer sales were 236,000 hectolitres (2005: 209,000 hl) with Foster’s Lager representing 88% of total production and sales (2005: 85%).

India is the third largest market for the Foster’s brand globally and it has achieved a CAGR of 13% since operations commenced in 1998. It has a presence in 19 Indian states and has a substantial share of the mild beer segment in the strategic state of Maharashtra.

Chile: 2Q 2006 total revenues increased 7.6% for Compañía Cervecerías Unidas S.A.

Compañía Cervecerías Unidas S.A. (CCU) announced August 02 its consolidated financial results, stated in Chilean GAAP for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2006. All US$ figures are based on the exchange rate effective June 30, 2006 (US$1.00 = Ch$539.44).

Second quarter (Q2'06) total revenues increased 7.6% to Ch$110,013 million (US$203.9 million), as a result of higher consolidated volumes and higher average prices. Consolidated volumes growth is explained by an increase of 20.9% in beer Chile, 8.6% in beer Argentina, 9.8% in the soft drink segment, 4.6% and 12.5% in the Chilean export wine and Argentine wine businesses, respectively, partially offset by lower sales volumes of domestic wine and pisco. The increase in average prices is explained by higher prices in the pisco, Argentine wine and beer Argentina segments, partially offset by lower prices in the beer Chile, domestic and export wine segments, as well as the soft drink segment.

The year-to-date (YTD) accumulated revenues increased 7.5%, amounting to Ch$251,384 million (US$466.0 million). Denmark & UK: Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) 1H 2006 net sales increased 17.7%

Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) announced August 02 its half year and second quarter 2006 results. BBH has demonstrated very good progress in the first half of 2006 with net sales and operating profit growth of 18% to €961M and 31% to €199M respectively. Operating margin increased 210bp to 20.7%. The underlying margin improvement has been driven by strong top line performance and the brewery is continuing to benefit from the legal integration in Russia. BBH will continue to invest in front-end business drivers including marketing, sales and distribution, which will reinforce its position for future growth.

Pricing & Margin Growth

Pricing has improved across all markets. Price per litre has grown by 7.2% in local currency driven by a volume shift into premium and licensed brands. Package mix is now having much less of an impact on net sales as we see a 0.3%pts reduction across the period. Reported margin has been strong at 20.7% (210bp growth). The improvement has been driven by mix, synergies, and administration and production efficiencies as we benefit from operational leverage.

Vietnam: Asia Pacific Breweries acquires Foster’s Breweries in Vietnam

After revealing plans to expand its markets to Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Laos and India over the past twelve months, Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) is also seizing intra-market growth opportunities in one of its key profit pools - Vietnam. It announced August 04 that it will be purchasing the Vietnam assets of the Foster's Group for US$105 million (approximately S$165.9 million). This transaction includes the rights to brew, market and distribute Foster’s Lager, Biere Larue, BGI, Flag and Song Han, in Vietnam.

APB, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Asia Pacific Breweries (Australia) Pty Ltd, has entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with Australia’s Dismin Investment Pty Ltd (Dismin), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Foster’s Group Limited, for 100% of Dismin’s brewing assets in Vietnam.

The assets include FBG Vietnam Holdings Pty Ltd which owns 2 breweries – one in Danang in central Vietnam and the other in Tien Giang (70 kilometres southwest of Ho Chi Minh City and on the north of the Mekong Delta) in southern Vietnam. APB will finance the purchase through external borrowings.

Poland: Beer sales up 4.8% year-on-year to 15.55 million hl in H1 2006

Browary Polskie, a grouping that includes Poland's top three breweries, said its members sold 4.8% more beer year on year (y/y) to total 15.55 mln hectoliters (hl) in the first half of 2006 and expects average sales growth of 2 3% in 2006, Browary Polskie chairman Pawel Sudol told a press conference August 03, Interfax learned the same day.

"After the first six months of the year we can say that 2006 is a good continuation of 2005," Sudol said. "The year is relatively good due to the positive economic situation, good summer weather, the World Cup in football and a trend for drinking beer, so the chances are that we will exceed 30 mln hl again in 2006. This is a result which we are very glad of and we would like the 3% sales growth to continue for the whole of 2006."

Sudol said that beer exports remained at a low level when compared to domestic sales, although exports exceed imports. Czech Republic: Beer output rises 4.1% in 1H 2006

Czech breweries increased production by 4.1% in the first six months of the year to 9.52 million hectolitres on the back of surging exports, the head of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses, Jan Vesely, told AFP August 02, Fin24 released August 02.

Brewers are likely to set a new production record this year with output probably climbing to around 19.5 million hectolitres, beating last year's record of 19.01 million hectolitres, Vesely added.

"That is mainly due to the increased export demand," Vesely explained. "Czech beer is probably the best in the world," he added.

Czech exports of beer are estimated to have risen by 15-20% in the first six months. Germany, Slovakia, Britain and the United States are the biggest buyers of Czech beer, Vesely added.

Some smaller Czech brewers have been opening up new markets, the business daily Hospodarske Noviny reported on Wednesday. The small Klaster brewery has dispatch 200 million hectolitres for sale in China.

North Czech based Drinks Union has begun exports to the small West African state of Benin after already launching sales in Liberia, it added.

EU: For the first time in years the early malt buyers were right

Many brewers had a problem to realize that the new malt price levels are likely there to stay for the crop year of 2006/07, market analysts commented on August 1. After a few years of ever dropping malt prices, their budgets were prepared too early and the cost of malt was estimated far too low.

For the first time in years the early buyers were right, and those who hesitated must pay up. Total quantities of malt still to be covered by the large brewing groups and a number of large overseas customers are very sizeable indeed, it is even a question, whether we shall return to a relaxed supply situation during 2007.

EU: Malting barley prices at least €10 higher than a few weeks ago

In world grain markets the EU is not competitive, in barley not against the Black Sea, analysts commented August 01. Price development in malting barley markets reflects the fear of an undersupply of quality barley. French 2RS Scarlett, July, FOB Creil is quoted €132.00, FOB Moselle traded at €140.00. Denmark reports sellers for October shipment, FOB Baltic ports, €140.00, but buyers a few Euros lower.

German 2RS barley sold for Oct-Dec delivery, delivered South German malthouses at €150.00. All prices are at least € 10.00 higher than a few weeks ago. The worst part is that there are hardly any sellers in the market, and that will remain so till crop results are a bit clearer in Germany, Denmark and the U.K

World: EU barley prices less competitive than Black Sea prices

Feed barley trade is almost exclusively done from the Black Sea, prices FOB small ports are US$115.00 / 118.00, FOB large ports US$120.00 / 122.00, reports stated August 01. For comparison EU barley is not at all competitive at levels between US$135.00 and 140.00 FOB seaports. Quotes for Saudi-Arabia, the world’s largest buyer of feed barley, are around US$145.00 CIF. China is the largest importer of malting barley, quotes of Canadian and Australian barley are US$195.00 to 205.00 CIF, a reaction to poor new crop prospects.

Predicting Preharvest Sprouting Susceptibility in Barley: A Model Based on Temperature during Grain Filling

ABSTRACT: Preharvest sprouting (PHS) susceptibility in cereals is a conse- quence of low grain dormancy before harvest. Dormancy loss rate depends on genotype and may also be affected by environmental conditions during seed formation. To establish a quantitative relation- ship between temperature and PHS susceptibility, a malting barley Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar, ‘Quilmes Palomar’, was sown on differ- ent dates over a 3-yr period to obtain a range of thermal conditions during grain fillin (soil type: Aeric Argiudoll). The period from pollination to physiological maturity (PM) was adjusted to a thermal time (TT) scale, which was then divided into 50 C-day intervals. Mean temperature within each interval was calculated for the different sow- ing dates. Grain dormancy was monitored using a germination index GI). We sought a linear relationship between temperature during grain filling and GI at some moment after PM.
