1. Industry news
Latvia's leading brewery "Aldaris" has signed a significant contract with the Russian "Baltica ". According to this agreement the Latvian brewer gets the exclusive right to produce in Riga Baltika No.8 Wheat" and "Baltika No.1 Light" beers and sell these brands on the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian beer markets . Besides this , "Aldaris" will have the right to sell in the future other brands produced by "Baltica".
The signing of such a contract with "Aldaris" represents a debut for Baltica,as up to now it never sold licenses to produce and sell Baltica brands abroad.
Anheuser-Busch, the largest brewery in the world has presented excellent
financial results for the first quarter of 2002 year. This presentation
was made at the annual meeting of shareholders in St. Charles, Missouri by
the company's Chairman of the Board and President August A. Busch III.
One of the most significant piece of news that was communicated by the
corporation's President to the shareholders was the announce about a 15%
increase of earnings per share realized by the company . Moreover
Anheuser-Busch reported impressive growths of its profit margins that also
could not disappoint its stockholders . Thus, for the first quarter of
2002 the American giant succeeded to boost its gross profit margin by
220% and has obtained an increase of 90% for its operating profit margin.
The American Brewer managed as well to increase significantly its domestic
and external sales . Domestic sales ( to-retailers ) for the first quarter

Femsa , one of the largest breweries in Mexico, has published its financial results for the first quarter of 2002. Thus, the Mexican brewer has been able to please its shareholders by posting sales of Ps. 11.358 milliard for the first quarter of 2002 which is a growth of 6% over the first quarter of 2001.
Femsa's operating income increased at its tour by 7,9% , reaching the value of Ps. 1.537 milliard. As a result of this increase the operating margin for the first quarter of 2002 was of 13.5%, and the net income raised by 28.7% amounting to

Russian brewery Bravo which holds a market share of 17% in the area of St.
Petersburg and possessing a capacity of 5 mln hectoliters, has been
recently acquired by the Dutch brewer Heineken .
This is a profitable affair for Heineken , which has bought 100% of Bravo's
stock , as it gives Heineken the privilege to benefit from popular and
well appreciated beer brands and because it offers the Dutch brewer the

2. Malt markets and prices
Domestic EU business was active in April. Prices came under pressure from weak barley markets and purchase strategies of large breweries groups.
Prices paid for deliveries in 2003 were both above and slightly below EUR 290,-. It is assumed that German industries are covered for 75-85 % of their 2003 demand, estimates for the independent breweries in Benelux and France are lower.
