Brewery News
Canada: Sleeman Breweries Ltd. net earnings increased 41% in 2Q 2006

Sleeman Breweries Ltd. released August 10 its financial results for the second quarter ended July 1, 2006.

Net revenue grew to $57.8 million in the second quarter of 2006 from $57.4 million in the prior year (all amounts in CA& unless otherwise stated). This represented a 1% increase. Total produced and sold volumes were up by 7% over the second quarter of 2005 to 361,000 hectolitres. Sapporo volumes increased 9% and core volumes increased 7% nationally. This volume increase outpaced the industry increase, for the quarter, estimated to be 2%.

Premium volumes declined by 2% in the quarter due mainly to the fact that the current quarter did not benefit from Easter holiday sales like last year's second quarter. Value brand volumes grew by 17% as the Company focused on growing value brand sales in the Ontario and Quebec markets. This growth was realized through effective sales and marketing support at existing spending levels.

Net revenue declined by $11 per hectolitre. The planned shift in product mix to a higher proportion of value category volumes caused approximately one-half of the reduction in net revenue per hectolitre. The balance of the reduction was a result of lower net prices realized on ...

Russia: Baltika Breweries H1 2006 sales increased 4% year-on-year

Baltica Breweries reported August 10 its main financial results for H1 2006. The company mentioned the leadership on the market and the improvement of volume dynamics in second quarter of 2006.

Baltika Breweries continues to be the leader on the market with a market share of 23.6% and has increased its share relative to the first quarter of the current year by 0.6 percentage points. The Baltika sales volume in H1'06 amounted to 11.2 million hectoliters, a growth of + 4.0% compared to the same period last year.

The restructuring of the distribution system - the unification of distribution systems of the companies, changes to the system of sales, the transition to unified price models, and the rotation of trade personnel - all of which exercised a restraining influence on sales during Q1 2006, have already begun to produce the first positive results, which influenced on the Q2 2006 results, when the Company showed beer volume growth in Russia by 8.5%, while the market grew by 8.7%.

During H1 2006, the Company managed the portfolio of brands of all 4 companies in the Group. The unified portfolio of brands permitted the Company to be the leader ...

Australia: SABMiller announces Joint Venture with Australian distributor

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced August 10 that it has entered into a joint venture with Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) to import, market and distribute SABMiller’s international premium brands in Australia.

Under the terms of the agreement, SABMiller and CCA will each hold a 50% interest in the joint venture, which will be known as Pacific Beverages Pty Ltd. The joint venture will combine SABMiller’s marketing expertise with CCA’s comprehensive sales and distribution infrastructure to sell Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell and Miller Genuine Draft alongside CCA’s existing non-alcoholic beverage portfolio.

The joint venture, which is expected to be operational by Christmas 2006 following the fulfillment of certain conditions, will be headed by Ari Mervis, formerly Managing Director of SABMiller’s Russian operations. During the four years under Mr Mervis’ leadership, the Russian business grew beer volumes by more than 150% resulting in SABMiller holding the leading position in the international premium sector of this highly competitive market.

CCA is the largest non-alcoholic beverage company in the Asia-Pacific region and one of the world’s leading Coca-Cola bottlers, with operations in six countries. The premium beer market in Australia has grown by 15 percent per annum over the past five years, driven ...

Japan: Kirin Brewery Co. posts 20 pct rise in 1H 2006 profit

Japan's Kirin Brewery Co. reported a 20 percent rise in first-half operating profit on strong sales of its beer-like drinks and stuck to its full-year forecast, Reuters communicated August 10. Kirin, which topped rival Asahi Breweries as Japan's biggest beer maker in the half year, said its group operating profit came to 44.99 billion yen (US$391 million) for the six months ended June, against 37.53 billion yen a year earlier.

For the year to December, Kirin said it kept its forecast of a profit of 117 billion yen. That compares with a consensus projection of 124.8 billion yen in a poll of 12 analysts by Reuters Estimates. Kirin's strength comes from the popularity of its low-priced beer-like drinks, or so-called third-type beer, whose sales doubled in the first half, taking a 41 percent share in the growing segment.

Its total beer sales, including regular beer, low-malt "happoshu" brew and beer-like drinks, rose 10.7 percent in the January-June period, giving it a 37.6 percent domestic market share. Asahi's share dropped to 37.3 percent.

Shares in Kirin rose 31 percent in the first half, outperforming an 11 percent gain in the Tokyo Stock Exchange's food subindex.

USA &Mexico: American beer drinkers shift to Mexican beers which have over 50% of the import market share

Millions of Americans seeking an alternative to domestic brews are increasingly drinking beer imported from Mexico. This trend, combined with new ways of distributing and marketing products, is boosting results for Mexican brewers and helping them to slowly but consistently swallow more of domestic companies' market share, analysts say, MarketWatch released August 10.

Fomento Economico Mexicano S.A., the maker of Tecate and Dos Equis, reported a 42% jump in its export volume in the first quarter of 2006 on the back of strong U.S. sales. That means the brewer exported more than 17 million gallons of beer, up from 12 million gallons. In the second quarter, exports dropped 0.5% due to the distribution of a buildup of inventory from the previous quarter, the company said.

Exports from Mexico's other beer giant, Corona maker Grupo Modelo S.A., climbed 20.5% in the first quarter and 7.8% in the second.

In contrast, domestic volumes at the biggest American brewers, Anheuser-Busch Cos. and Molson Coors Brewing Co. grew by less than 5% in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Anheuser-Busch's domestic beer volume rose 2.2%. The St. Louis-based brewer owns 50% of Grupo Modelo. The shift of many American beer drinkers toward imports is ...

Efes Breweries International increased beer sales in Russia 40% year-on-year to 4 million hectoliters in the first half of 2006, the company said in a release, Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge announced August 09.

These figures include the results of Krasny Vostok, which Efes bought in February 2006. Not including Krasny Vostok, Efes sales in Russia grew 12% year-on-year to 3.1 million hectoliters in January-June 2006.

The company doubled production capacity at its Ufa brewery to 4 million hectoliters per year in the first half of 2006. Following the upgrade, the company's overall production capacity in Russia amounted to 19.7 million hectoliters at the end of June.

Efes beer sales in Kazakhstan increased 28% year-on-year to 0.4 million hectoliters in the half, while sales of beer and non-alcoholic beverages in Moldova grew 7% to 0.5 million hectoliters, including an 18% rise in beer sales.

Total sales, including Krasny Vostok, amounted to 5.5 million hectoliters in the first half of 2006, up 33% year-on-year, the company said. Not including Krasny Vostok, sales grew 14% to 4.7 million hectoliters.

Malt News
World: Malting industry talks for the first time about a possible temporary shortage of malt supply

In the malt export sector Southeast Asia, Africa and South America purchased additional quantities for shipment in 2006, altogether at least 100,000 tons, experts admitted august 01.

In domestic markets brewers covered substantial quantities against non-deliveries by the Weissheimer group and against quality problems of other maltsters (Last year's crop included much high protein barley). So for the first time since years the industry talks about a possible temporary shortage of malt supplies.

Barley News
China: Industries to absorb more domestic malting barley supplies

As offers of Canadian and Australian malting barley CIF China have risen to levels around US$200, Chinese industries will probably absorb more domestic supplies than in past years, reports stated August 01.

Specialists estimate that at least 2.2 million tons must be imported, also for reasons of malt quality. Chinese beer production, 306 million hl last year, is rising further.

Scandinavia: Imports of malting barley from Denmark, Sweden and/or Finland to diminish as global demand seems so far easy to cover

If weather consents, it’s theoretically possible to harvest all Danish malting barley crops in 5 days, Sweden in 7 days and Finland in 6 days, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS released in its 07 Scandinavian Malting barley report of August 10. And weather has been permitting up to August 10 with very few and insignificant exceptions. In Denmark, the harvesting campaign has progressed well (75-80% in Lolland/Falster, 50-60% in Zealand-Fyn, over 25% in East Jutland, 25% in North Jutland). In South Sweden, crops were 30% harvested in East and North and 25% in South and West while in Mid Sweden harvest is reported to start in 2 weeks. In the South West region of Finland barley was cropped only from 2% of the yielded areas.

For some time now Scandinavian malting barley markets have been directed by France and South of Germany. The harvesting results there have given vent to some unrest. Question is, when all is in, whether there is serious reason for the firmness, all (including UK) taken into consideration.

Globally there will be a smaller crop but demand seems so far rather easy to cover. Russia is still bringing in nice barley which in principle will diminish import ...

Scientific Digest
Agrochemicals Accepted by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and Brewing Research International (BRi) for use on Barley and Hops

The Purpose of the BBPA’s and BRi’s List
The BRi and BBPA aim to test agrochemicals which, because of their chemical nature or timing of application to barley or hops could potentially affect either the malting, brewing or fermentation processes, or could cause undesirable off-flavours in the finished beer. In the EU, Council Directive 93/71/EEC (Annex III) requires the effects of pesticides on transformation processes to be taken into account and requires an evaluation of the possible occurrence of adverse effects on transformation processes, such as brewing and malting, or on the quality of their products.
In order for a chemical to be included on the list of accepted chemicals, BRi will carry out an initial assessment of factors including; chemical nature; mode of action; time of application; available test data. Following this initial assessment, BRi will conduct any further additional malting or brewing trials necessary to come to a decision. These further trials do not replace or duplicate the toxicological or efficacy testing required by the Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) before the chemical can be registered, but are designed to test the suitability of treated crops for processing specifically within the malting and brewing industry.
