Brewery News
Russia: Sun Interbrew launches US$148-mln three-year bonds on MICEX

Sun Interbrew Finance, a special-purpose vehicle of Sun Interbrew Limited in Russia, said August 17 it had started floating three-year bonds worth RUR4 billion (about US$148 million) on the Moscow Inter-Bank Currency Exchange (MICEX), RIA Novosti released August 17.

"The placement of Sun Interbrew Finance Series 02 unconvertible interest-bearing documentary bearer bonds, with mandatory centralized custody, has started," the MICEX said in a press release.

Bonds, with a nominal cost of RUR1,000 (about US$37) per bond, will be floated via public subscription at 100% of par value. Raiffeisenbank Austria is the bonds' seller on the MICEX, the press release said.

The bonds will mature August 13, 2009, the MICEX said.

SUN Interbrew Limited was set up in 1999 after a merger of InBev brewery and the SUN group. In Russia, the company sells famous foreign beers such as Stella, Beck's and Staropramen, as well as popular Russian varieties like Klinskoye, Sibirskaya Korona and Tolstyak. It also sells Stella, Beck's, Chernigovskoye, Rogan and Taller in Ukraine.

Thailand: Singha Corp plans to build a new THB4 million brewery boosting total brewing capacity to 15,500 hl

Singha Corporation, formerly Boon Rawd Brewery, the country's second-largest beer producer, is to boost its capital expenditure over the next two years by 25% to THB5 billion, up from THB4 billion under an earlier plan, Bangkok Post posted August 17.

President Santi Bhirombhakdi said an increase in investment was aimed at supporting its plan to build a third brewery in a province in the central plains, requiring an investment of THB4 billion.

Construction of its new factory, located on a 150-rai plot, will begin next year and drive the total annual capacity of Singha beer to 1,550 million litres, up from the combined capacity at its existing breweries in Pathum Thani and Khon Kaen of 1,150 million litres. The additional output will serve both local and international markets.

THB1 billion of the funds will be used for future joint ventures with overseas partners and the capacity expansion of its packaging facility at Bangkok Glass Industry Co Ltd, in which it holds a 50% stake.

He said the firm was in talks with possible partners in three countries to establish joint-venture firms, in which Singha and its partners would hold equal stakes.

"Staying independent makes it hard to expand. Forming joint ventures ...

Finland: Carlsberg-owned Sinebrychoff to restructure with almost 140 redundancies

Carlsberg's Finnish subsidiary Oy Sinebrychoff has just announced plans to restructure its business as well as invest in a new PET bottle production, Carlsberg announced August 16.

As part of the plan, bottling and warehousing facilities will be centralised in one of the company's two breweries which will also start utilizing a new automated high bay warehouse later this autumn, thus becoming the logistics centre of the company.

As a consequence Sinebrychoff has given notice that staff will be reduced with approximately 140 employees throughout the organisation.

"We are market leaders and doing well, but even so timely efficiency improvements are essential to keep this position in the future," says Mikael Aro, CEO of Sinebrychoff.

The new operational model is expected to be fully implemented in 2008, thus achieving annual cost savings of approximately DKK 90 million. The restructuring in Finland does not impact the latest guidance for 2006.

Investments in a new PET bottle production amount to DKK 140 million. It will be ready in 2008 and enable Sinebrychoff to introduce a number of new products and recyclable packages.

UK: Hardys & Hansons

Greene King’s bid for Nottingham-based brewer Hardys & Hansons has been given near-unanimous approval from shareholders, The Publican acknowledged August 16.

Investors were deciding August 16 on whether to approve the Suffolk group’s £271million offer, tabled in May.

The bid was given the green light by 95 per cent of those shareholders voting, which means Greene King can now get on with the job of integrating both operations.

H&H has 268 managed and tenanted pubs and a brewery, which produces cask ales such as Olde Trip.

Beer enthusiasts fear Greene King will close the brewery, which employs in excess of 100 people, and move production to its Bury St Edmunds headquarters.

Denmark & Latvia: Royal Unibrew A/S to build new EUR14 million brewery

Scandinavia's second largest brewery business Danish based Royal Unibrew A/S is to build a new brewery in Latvia, in order to satisfy the growing demand for beer in the Baltic region, media released August 18.

The new brewery will be sited in Lielvarde and Royal Unibrew plans to spend EUR14 million for the construction of the new brewery.

Lacplesa Alus, Latvia’s forth largest brewery, is already owned by the Danish brewer. In addition, Royal’s Latvian assets include also the country’s largest soft drinks group Cido.

Conny Astrup-Larsen, Lacplesa Alus board chairwoman said: “Planning of the new brewery’s design and infrastructure is underway, but before construction works can begin in Lielvarde, these plans have to be approved by the respective state authorities.”

Royal Unibrew A/S is a listed, international business that produces, distributes, markets and sells beer, malt and soft drinks in 65 markets - primarily in Europe, America and Africa.

We comprise four breweries in Denmark, two in Lithuania, one brewery and one soft drinks business in Latvia as well as two breweries in Poland. In addition, we have sales companies and associates in a number of countries. We employ a total of some 2,200 people.

Russia: Ochakovo net profit increased to RUR198.508 million in 1H 2006

Moscow's Ochakovo Brewery, one of the major producers of beer and other beverages in Russia, increased net profit 450% year-on-year to 198.5 million rubles in the first half of 2006 from 36 million rubles in the same period of 2005, the company released August 14, Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge announced August 16. EBIDTA rose 12.6% and reached RUR 3.55 million.

The increase in net profit is attributable to an increase in sales revenue, the release says.

The Ochakovo Brewery opened in 1978 and was incorporated in 1993. The company's largest shareholders are its top executives. Ochakovo sold 721.1 million liters of beverages in 2005, down 0.2% from 2004. Beer sales dropped 3.2% to 508 million liters, while sales of low- alcoholic drinks fell 17.5% to 89.3 million liters. Sales of nonalcoholic beverages, however, jumped 43.22% to 118.9 million liters, while sales of kvass (a lightly fermented traditional beverage) skyrocketed 75% to 43 million liters.

Officials stressed that the company has shifted to other marketing and brand portfolio approach. It also revised packaging strategies and spent US$18 million in advertising and trade-marketing campaigns.

Commenting on the company’s good results, General Director Vladimir Antonov said: “For the next half of year we plan ...

Malt News
EU: Export flow of 2.2 million tons of malt to be maintained with difficulty

EU malt export restitutions for 147,000 tons were booked in July, a very low figure, which would not be sufficient to maintain the export flow of 2.2 million tons on a year basis. However, the figure must be misleading, as export business has been very good, not only for shipments in 2007, but also for the later months of this year, analyst commented August 01.

Malt markets are active, prices are firm and have probably not reached their highest levels yet. One obvious reason is the scarcity of good quality malting barley from this year's crop and the high and still rising barley price levels. Another reason is the precarious P/L situation of the whole malting industry, which is obliged to show profitable balance sheets after two years of horrendous losses.

The increase of the cost of energy and transport is a further factor. The dry and hot summer, which has damaged the barley fields, has also dried up river beds, so that the usually cheapest means of mass transport by barges has become extremely expensive on and around the Rhine, and even impossible on Elbe and Oder.

Barley News
Central Europe: Malting barley harvest yields fair results in Slovakia, poor crop in Poland and disappointing quality reports in Czech Republic

According to analysts report of August 01, the harvest campaign has started in Czech Republic, but early yield and quality reports from Bohemia are disappointing, high screenings and high protein are also reported. It is expected that Moravia’s crop will be better.

In Slovakia harvest is almost finished in the flat country along the Danube. Maltsters report fair yields, high screenings, and partly correct, but partly too low protein contents.

Like East Germany, the larger part of Poland is harvesting a very poor grain crop. Malting barley
shows all possible deficits, yields, screenings, high protein, but, of course, very low moisture contents. Silesia seems to be better off than the North.

Scandinavia: Rain endangers malting barley crop in Denmark and Sweden, Finland managed to get reasonable quantities under roof

Barley fields were left alone in the rain since August 11, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS released in its Scandinavian Malting Barley Report No/08 of August 16.

Farmers left in hope and fear, watching daily weather forecasts and unfortunately only a few dry intervals to be seen for the next week in Denmark and Sweden whereas Finland has had different weather patterns and managed to get reasonable quantities and qualities under roof.

They are harvesting August 16 whilst Denmark and Sweden need minimum 2 dry days being able to commence. Since August 11, 100 – 160 mm of rain fell on the regions. The fear goes on pre germination which could appear due to humidity and above 22 degrees C in the daytime.

In Denmark, crop was 98% harvested in Lolland/Falster region, 50-60% in Zealand-Fyn, 40% in East Jutland and only 30% in North Jutland. In South Sweden, malting barley was yielded from 40% of the harvested areas in East and North, 40% in South and West. Malting barley started to be yielded in Mid Sweden and the harvesting campaign progressed to 40% in O. Goetland, 35% in W. Goetland and only 10% in Lake Maelaren. In the South West region ...

Genetically Modified Barley and the Brewing Industry

By Gary J. Muehlbauer 1 and D. A. Somers 2
1 Assistant Professor
2 Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics,
University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, USA.

ABSTRACT
All crops used in the production of beer, with the exception of hops, can be genetically modified (GM). While barley is being genetically modified for research purposes and will likely be commercialized in the near future, other GM crops such as corn and rice are in commercial production. This review addresses the impact of GM barley and other GM crops on the brewing industry. Specific topics include: (i) the history and status of plant genetic engineering technologies with emphasis on barley and other cereals, (ii) GM crops and traits currently in production and those that are being developed for future commercialization, (iii) concerns, risks, and benefits of GM crops including barley and crops used as brewing ingredients, and (iv) methods for detection of GM ingredients. Keywords: GMO, genetic engineering,
