Brewery News
UK: Diageo net sales increased 9% to GBP7.260 million for the year ended 30 June 2006

Diageo released August 31 its Preliminary results for the year ended 30 June 2006.

Paul Walsh, Chief Executive of Diageo, commenting on the year ended 30 June 2006 said: “Diageo’s strong full year performance is the result of brand building marketing campaigns, better sales execution to build superior relationships with our customers and successful new product launches.

“North America continues to deliver industry beating top line growth; a more cost effective European business is driving operating profit and margin growth; and the rate of sales growth in International has accelerated following new brand introductions and increased investment.

“Strong top line growth has delivered organic operating margin expansion and organic operating profit growth in line with our guidance at the beginning of the year despite pressure on input costs. At the same time we have increased marketing investment creating a stronger platform for future growth. We have delivered another year of strong free cash flow and through our dividends and share buybacks we have returned a further GBP2.3 billion to our shareholders.

“With well-positioned brands and a more efficient and effective organisation, we enter the new financial year with confidence. We expect that organic net sales growth will be in line ...

Estonia: Saku Olletehase sales increased 7.6% in 1H 2006

In the first half of 2006, Saku Olletehase AS sold over 42 million litres of beverages, a notable 7.6 per cent or 3 million litre improvement on a year ago, the company said in its Interim Financial Statement for 1H 2006 released on August 30.

Six months’ revenues totalled EEK 350 million (€22.4 million), an EEK 45.8 million (€2.9 million) or 15 per cent upswing on the first six months of 2005. The boost in revenue may be attributed to better sales in all product categories and a clear upmarket shift in the category of beer.

Expenses totalled EEK 292.4 million (€18.7 million), EEK 25 million (€1.6 million) or 9 per cent up on the same period in 2005. The principal growth drivers were pay rises in the production and logistics functions which took place in the second quarter and a continuing upsurge in fuel and energy prices.

Profit before tax amounted to EEK 58.8 million (€3.8 million), a solid EEK 21.8 million (€1.3 million) or 59 per cent improvement on the first half of 2005. The dividend distribution gave rise to income tax expense of EEK 23.8 million (€1.5 million).

Czech Republic: Beer output increased 5% in the seven months of 2006

Czech breweries raised beer output by 5 percent year-on-year in the first seven months of the year owing to a hot July, said Jan Vesely, director of the Czech Beer and Malt Association, CTK unveiled August 30.

In the first half, beer output grew by 4.4 percent. In July alone, production rose by 9 percent year-on-year, Vesely said, adding successful exports were another factor.

In the first half, Czech breweries raised exports by 17 percent year-on-year to 1.7 million hectolitres, while sales to the domestic market added 2 percent to 7.85 million hectolitres. Vesely added output in August would be lower owing to colder weather.

Czech beer output for the full year is estimated at 19.5 million hectolitres, mainly owing to a growth in exports to 3.5 million hectolitres. In 2005, Czech breweries produced 19.07 million hectolitres of beer, with exports at 3.1 million hectolitres.

Denmark: Royal Unibrew A/S reports 6 month operating profit of DKK60.6 million

The Danish brewery group Royal Unibrew A/S reported 29 August an operating profit of DKK60.6 million on net revenue of DKK1.62 billion for the financial period January-June 2006, Nordic Business Report Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge released August 29.

Operating profit for the six-month period decreased from DKK65.5 million while net revenue increased from DKK1.51 million, as compared to the corresponding period in 2005.

Royal Unibrew A/S is a listed, international business that produces, distributes, markets and sells beer, malt and soft drinks in 65 markets - primarily in Europe, America and Africa.

It comprise four breweries in Denmark, two in Lithuania, one brewery and one soft drinks business in Latvia as well as two breweries in Poland. In addition, it has sales companies and associates in a number of countries. Royal Unibrew A/S employs a total of some 2,200 people.

One Danish krone (DKK) is worth approximately 0.09 British pounds (GBP).

USA: Heineken is in a light-beer war with itself as Amstel is eclipsed by Heineken Premium Light

Heineken's Amstel Light is struggling to maintain relevance within the import-light-beer category it invented, and the culprit may be ... Heineken Premium Light, Advertising Age reported August 30.

While this summer's launch of Heineken Premium Light exceeded most industry expectations, sibling brand Amstel has seen its already-flagging sales drop even further, losing its long-held top ranking among imported light beers to Corona Light.

Amstel saw shipments fall 4% last year in a red-hot import market that grew 7% overall, and Amstel's sales are down about 11% this summer.

Heineken insists Premium Light targets different drinkers than Amstel, and is breaking a branding push to draw clearer lines between the two brands. The campaign, an extension of the "Live Tastefully" effort from Publicis, New York, that launched late last year, will lean on upscale event marketing to re-establish Amstel's luxury credentials.

"They're right to try to freshen it up a bit," said alcohol-industry consultant Arthur Shapiro. "But I don't know if going for a pedestal is the right way to grow volume."

Amstel Light Brand Manager Richard Byrne said the beer's soft sales had more to do with competition from fast-growing wine and spirits than Heineken Light, which he said was focused ...

Australia: Foster's Group Ltd. denies takeover approach

Foster's Group Ltd., Australia's biggest beer and wine maker, said August 29 it was not aware of any takeover proposals, sending its shares down as much as 3 percent, Reuters accordingly reported.

Shares in Foster's surged to a record high August 29 on an unsourced media report that said InBev, the world's largest brewer by volume, and second-ranked SABMiller were thought to be looking at the Australian company, which is valued at around AU$12 billion (US$9 billion).

Analysts did not rule out a takeover but said the chances of an offer from SAB Miller or InBev were low.

Macquarie Equities said both had the capacity to buy Foster's, but neither had shown an attraction to wine.

"The Australian beer market is relatively small and mature on a global comparison, while Foster's global reach is limited by its recent divestments and complicated incumbent distribution agreements," Macquarie said in a research report.

Foster's shares were down 1.5 percent at AU$5.86 in late morning trade, in a wider market up 0.1 percent. Its shares gained 9.2 percent August 29.

"The company is not aware of any proposals which may lead to a takeover, and no approaches to that end have been made," Foster's said in a statement.

Malt News
Czech Republic: Malt production increased 2% year-on-year for 1H 2006

According to the Czech Beer and Malt Association statement , Czech malt houses raised output in the first half of 2006 by 2 percent year-on-year to 266,000 tonnes. More than half of the amount was sold abroad, above all to Poland, Romania, Germany, Cuba, Slovenia and Austria.

Barley News
Belarus: Exports of malting barley recorded 38,500 t as of August 29

The Belarusian Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAF) controls the sales of malting barley on account of government buying. By August 29 the enterprises have sold 38,500 tonnes of malting barley; that is 25.7% of the plan, AgriMarket released August 29.

Also they prepared about 17.000 tonnes more. In total government buying is for 150,000 tonnes. Low sales of malting barley on account of government buying are caused by selecting grain on raw areas of barley production as well as in different enterprises. Because of small size of grains the enterprises should sort it on grain-receiving points; brewing plants receive grain themselves. According to Deputy Director of central administration of crop science of MAF, Vladimir Kuratnik, the processors have the opportunity to select qualitative grain for brewing - in total they collected 258,000 t.

Australia: Barley prices re-surge as fear of poor harvest intensifies

Old and new-crop barley prices are surging as fears of a poor harvest grow. Dry weather is expected to cut the national crop from an average of 7.5-8.5 million tonnes to as little as 5.5 million tonnes, World-Grain released August 30. Prices for old-crop malt barley are also being driven by China which is buying to ensure it is not left high and dry by a small harvest. It imports up to three million tonnes of malt barley and is buying in Australia for the container trade at up to AU$246 a tonne, delivered to terminals. Growers can achieve up to AU$210 delivered to Melbourne.

Malt barley production is down in the northern hemisphere. Europe has a limited surplus for export with late rain hitting quality. Canada has a smaller crop with only about 500,000 tonnes available for export.

New crop Feed I barley traded at a track price of $214 a tonne into Melbourne August 25. Old crop Feed I values followed, to be AU$188-AU$190 in Melbourne. Up-country delivered values also average AU$190.

Old-crop Feed I grade barley is expected to top AU$200 delivered to regional and Melbourne processors. Southern NSW feedlots are paying to AU$192 delivered for Feed I barley.

Hops News
USA: Hops were under less stress in USA than in Europe

The latter half of July brought with it above average temperatures on both sides of the Atlantic. In the United States, this slowed the growth of aroma hops, which are not fond of such weather. Due to the presence of drip irrigation in all alpha hop fields, alpha hop yield was not seriously affected, the International Hop Growers Convention released August 21 in its 2006 Crop Report.

In Europe, where irrigation is the exception rather than the norm, both aroma and alpha hop varieties were stressed. During July, the year 2006 was shaping up to be the worst since the draught of 2003. In both cases, the end of July and the beginning of August brought relief.

In the United States, cooler temperatures have prevailed during the month of August, easing the stress on all hop varieties. In Germany and the rest of Europe, August has brought with it above average rainfall. Hop farmers try not to be too optimistic, and indeed you can never know the crop until it is in the bale, but it appears that each passing day has brought with it a greater sense of relief as to what the crop will ...

Transformation Of Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) Using The Wheat Puroindoline Gene by Yusuke Odake

ABSTRACT
Feed and malting barley are major crops in Montana. Harrington, a two-rowed spring malting barley variety, is the most cultivated variety in the state. Barley was the last of the world’s major cereals for which transformation methods were developed because in vitro-cultured barley rapidly loses regeneration ability or gives rise to albino plants during selection for transformed tissue. Previous research used the variety Golden Promise because it regenerates well under research conditions, though it is not commercially used. Transformation could be an important method to improve varieties in North American barley cultivars. The puroindoline proteins (PINA and PINB) can be isolated from wheat endosperm and are basic cysteine and tryptophan-rich proteins that might play a role in defense against pathogens. The puroindolines show antifungal activity both in vitro and in vivo. Milk stage seeds were harvested to obtain embryos. Embryos were placed on induction media [2.5 mg/L 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 0.01 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP)] for 12 to 51days until calli formed. The biolistic method was chosen for transmitting the gene of interest into the calli, using a Biolistic PDS-1000/He Particle Delivery System (BioRad, Hercules, CA) with 900 psi rupture disks. Approximately 4,500 calli were bombarded with two plasmids; pinA driven by the maize ubiquitin promoter (Ubi1) which is expressed constitutively, and the hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph), which confers hygromycin B resistance and is driven by the CaMV 35S promoter for selection. The bombarded calli were selected on medium containing 30 mg/L Hygromycin B for 9 to 21 days, and subcultured to intermediate medium (1.0mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BAP), followed by regeneration media (1.0-3.0 mg/L BAP). Thirty hygromycin B resistant calli regenerated and 5 died in magenta box. Thirty five putative transgenic plants derived from 25 calli grew in soil and were harvested. Some plants tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tested positive with primers for pinA and hph. Southern blots were performed to detect the presence of hph in T1 barley genomic DNA but were negative. Northern blots performed to detect the presence of pinA and hph transcribed RNA in the T1leaf tissue were also negative, showing that no stably transformed plants were obtained.
