0 Germany: Carlsberg Deutschland competitively positioned

The restructuring processes at Carlsberg Germany into a competitive brewery and beverage wholesaler are almost complete, the company has recently announced. Through consistently focusing on the core business and on a small number of brands and by targeting northern and eastern Germany, it has been possible to reduce bank debts from 275 million euros (2003) to almost zero. It was possible to almost double equity ratio during this time, from 26.3 % in financial year 2003 to 51.3% in 2005. In the same period, the EBIT margin also rose from 4.4% to 7.8%, and profits increased from 11.9 million euros to 33.1 million euros.

The Danish parent company rewarded the achievement by presenting the company with the Carlsberg Award for the best turnaround among its subsidiaries.

Through its integration into the internationally acting Carlsberg A/S , executive chairman Wolfgang Burgard considers Carlsberg Germany to be strong and competitive and ready to face the national market. During the first two quarters of 2006, national sales were up by 0.3%.

The Carlsberg Germany group includes Holsten Brewery with its main brands Holsten, Astra and Carlsberg, the brewery in Lübz in Mecklenburg with Lübzer and Duckstein, the Feldschlößchen brewery in Dresden with Feldschlösschen Pilsner, ...

Barley News

0 Canada: 2006-07 barley exports to fall by 28% as lower feed barley exports are only partially offset by higher exports of malting barley

For 2006-07 barley supply in Canada decreased by 15% due to an 18% decrease in production related to lower area and yields. Barley exports are forecast by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to decrease by 28%, as lower feed barley exports are only partially offset by higher exports of malting barley, according to Grains and Oilseeds Outlook posted on September 20. Despite lower exports and domestic feed use, carry-out stocks are forecast to fall significantly.

The average off-Board feed barley price (No.1 CW, in-store Lethbridge) is forecast to increase by C$10/t from 2005-06. The CWB PRO for No. 1 CW feed barley for Pool A in 2006-07 is C$129/t, vs. C$127/t for Pool B in 2005- 06. The CWB PRO for SS2R malting barley is C$179/t vs. C$171/t for 2005-06, due to lower expected exportable supply in Australia and strong US import demand.

Submitted by A. Haikara, T. Sarlin and S. Home on behalf of the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention

Summary
A Subgroup of the EBC Brewing Science Group evaluated and tested an empirical method for the determination of gushing tendency of malt. Although all the details of the procedure were carefully standardised and the same beer brand sent to all the participants the precision of the method was not acceptable for the inclusion in Analytica-EBC.
