Brewery News
World: Global beer consumption in 2007 will reach around 1.61 billion hl, growing by an average of 2% per year

The global beer market expanded in 2005 by about 2.4% to 1.55 billion hectolitres, up from 1.52 billion hectolitres in 2004, Rabobank commented in one of its latest reports.

Total world beer consumption in 2007 will reach around 1.61 billion hectolitres, growing by an average of 2% per year, according to Canadean.

The main growth areas in the world in 2005 were Asia and Central & South America. In Asia, China is the largest and fastest-growing market and Brazil is the largest market in Central & South America.

Total beer consumption declined in North America, in Western Europe and in Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S. and Canada the decline has been due to the growing popularity of spirits and wine, especially in the on-trade. In Western Europe the ageing population is drinking less beer and looking for healthier alternatives like wine and mineral water.

Serbia: Carlsberg is to invest €20 million into its Serbian operations next year

Danish brewing force, Carlsberg A/S has recently announced that it plans to invest €20 million into its Serbian operations next year in order to capitalise on increased revenue from sales of beer in the country, Beverage Daily posted on September 21. Serbia was Carlsberg’s fastest-growing market last year with sales reaching 1.1m hectolitres in 2005, leaping from 570,000hl a year earlier.

Dr. Isaac Sheps, CEO of Carlsberg Srbija stated that the company had seen "very high growth in the last two years, having come from no. 5 in the market to a clear no.2, we need additional capacity to meet the forecasted demand for our brands in the country.” The company also revealed that around €3m will be put towards reducing the environmental impact associated with the plant, by funding a waste water treatment facility.

The company entered the market just three years ago, after acquiring the Pivara Celarevo brewery and has experienced steady growth ever since. Through popular local brands like Lav beer, Carlsberg has managed to acquire a 20 per cent market share in Serbia, making it the country's second biggest brewery. Last year it revealed that sales had almost doubled from 2004, increasing by 570,000 hectolitres to ...

China: Budweiser to come into Chinese medium-class market

The vice-president of the Shanghai management company of Anheuser-Busch (AB), Wang Dao said that the flagship Budweiser would first come into medium-class beer market, China Business Daily News posted on September 21.

Budweiser directly cuts in high-end market to build its own brand, while the company also hopes to enter mainstream beer market by purchase or alliance, Wang Dao introduced.

In 2004, AB successfully acquired the Chinese fourth largest beer manufacturer, Harbin Brewery Group. Besides, AB has purchased 27% stock of Tsingtao Brewery Group, the largest beer manufacturer in China.

At present, Budweiser has taken 50% shares of the Chinese high-end market. However, in spite of the rich profits, the high-end market share only takes 10% to 15% of the total amount of beer. China is the largest beer consumption market, with medium-class market space four times the high-end market, Wang Dao said.

Shanghai is still the key market for Budweiser, with sales volume of 800,000 tonnes in 2005, Wang Dao revealed.

Germany: Carlsberg Deutschland competitively positioned

The restructuring processes at Carlsberg Germany into a competitive brewery and beverage wholesaler are almost complete, the company has recently announced. Through consistently focusing on the core business and on a small number of brands and by targeting northern and eastern Germany, it has been possible to reduce bank debts from 275 million euros (2003) to almost zero. It was possible to almost double equity ratio during this time, from 26.3 % in financial year 2003 to 51.3% in 2005. In the same period, the EBIT margin also rose from 4.4% to 7.8%, and profits increased from 11.9 million euros to 33.1 million euros.

The Danish parent company rewarded the achievement by presenting the company with the Carlsberg Award for the best turnaround among its subsidiaries.

Through its integration into the internationally acting Carlsberg A/S , executive chairman Wolfgang Burgard considers Carlsberg Germany to be strong and competitive and ready to face the national market. During the first two quarters of 2006, national sales were up by 0.3%.

The Carlsberg Germany group includes Holsten Brewery with its main brands Holsten, Astra and Carlsberg, the brewery in Lübz in Mecklenburg with Lübzer and Duckstein, the Feldschlößchen brewery in Dresden with Feldschlösschen Pilsner, ...

Malt News
World: The malt market situation as of September 1

The Weissheimer insolvency is still pending. In Hungary Boortmalt is the new owner of the Alba Domu factory in Dunavjaros, while Inbev executed their priority rights in Böcs and will maintain and operate again their former malthouse, experts commented.

In August one more international brewing group entered the market for malt, so did breweries in Brazil, Thailand, Japan. Polar of Venezuela announced their purchase intentions, to be negotiated in September. A number of brewers are still waiting, including two of the world's largest.

Some EU maltsters claim to be sold out for 2007, others abstain from offering due to a lack of barley cover. It will be a difficult year for both maltsters and brewers.

North America: Overcapacity of malt had led to deteriorating malting margins like in Europe

In North America overcapacity in malting industry had led to deteriorating malting margins like in Europe.

IMC closed their Chicago factories, and several other factories in the U.S. and Canada were working below capacity. The summer demand, partly replacements of missing EU deliveries, changed the situation, North American maltsters can operate again with full capacities and at profitable malting margins.

Two new factories in Argentina do not appear to cut much into the selling chances of European and North American maltsters, as the beer output is booming in most countries of Latin America.

Barley News
Canada: 2006-07 barley exports to fall by 28% as lower feed barley exports are only partially offset by higher exports of malting barley

For 2006-07 barley supply in Canada decreased by 15% due to an 18% decrease in production related to lower area and yields. Barley exports are forecast by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to decrease by 28%, as lower feed barley exports are only partially offset by higher exports of malting barley, according to Grains and Oilseeds Outlook posted on September 20. Despite lower exports and domestic feed use, carry-out stocks are forecast to fall significantly.

The average off-Board feed barley price (No.1 CW, in-store Lethbridge) is forecast to increase by C$10/t from 2005-06. The CWB PRO for No. 1 CW feed barley for Pool A in 2006-07 is C$129/t, vs. C$127/t for Pool B in 2005- 06. The CWB PRO for SS2R malting barley is C$179/t vs. C$171/t for 2005-06, due to lower expected exportable supply in Australia and strong US import demand.

Belarus: The country will have to import malting barley this year

Belarus is very likely to have to import some malting barley this year, because of the poor quality of domestic one, UkrAgroConsult posted on September 20.

According to Belarus’ Deputy Prime Minister, the ban on malting barley imports will be lifted. He said: "This year we have grown more than 300,000 metric tonnes of malting barley, but its quality, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired."

While speaking about the grain crop in general, Mr. Bambiza said that the harvest might, however, reach 6 million tonnes, although the minimum target was 6.4 million metric tonnes as was last year. According to him, Belarus has already invited bids for buying about 150,000 metric tonnes of food wheat. "As for forage grain, we currently work for the domestic market, supplying hog and poultry farms with it," Mr. Bambiza said.

Belarus is still open for foreign investment in its brewing industry, they said.

However on September 7 Belarus media cited Lukashenko saying that foreign investors should pay “real price” for access to Belarusian brewing industry.

The Belarusian leader met with Sergei Kostyuchenko, CEO of Priorbank, and Leonid Anfimov, deputy head of the Presidential Administration, on September 5 ...

EU: Experts come with solutions for stabilizing the malting barley market

How can sufficient supplies for the EU maltsters be secured? And how can the market of malting barley be stabilized so that the exportable quantities of France, UK and Denmark come on the market?

Analysts believe that the supply problem will require:
a) a very large tolerance of both brewers and maltsters concerning the specifications of barley and malt,

b) there will be efforts to import barley from third countries, either under the preferential import quota at an import tax of € 16,- per ton or under the tax-free customs-controlled import/export scheme. Licences under the preferential import quota have a validity of 45 days. Ex/Import business requires a preserved identity of the goods. Apart from the administrative problems of such business, the main problem is the availability of good malting barley outside the EU at acceptable prices.

c) the last and regrettable solution of a barley deficit will be a reduction of malt production, which will certainly happen, specifically in those areas with insufficient local supplies and high transport cost from the surplus countries.

USA: Prices for Aroma hops worldwide to remain stable at high levels

Weekly American Crop Report
By: Douglas MacKinnon

The Aroma harvest has ended in the
United States and only bitter hops remain. Harvest typically continues through the end of September in Washington State but many growers in Oregon have already finished. It is impossible at the moment to predict the outcome of the American alpha crop. At this time, it appears that it will be average or better, but that can change. Aroma hop yields are down by 15 percent in some varieties. We can therefore expect prices for Aroma hops worldwide to remain stable at high levels. The American microbrewery industry demand is increasing. Therefore, additional acreage of aroma hops will likely be necessary in America in 2007 to maintain balance between supply and demand. Aroma hops in America are typically not grown on speculation. Growers will likely plant additional acreage only if it is contracted.

A serious concern of growers in Washington State is the labor shortage. Some farms are running with only 85% of their normal work force and that is making harvest difficult. The minimum hourly wage, which increases in Washington and Oregon States with the rate of inflation, is ... More Info

Determination of Gushing Tendency of Malt
Submitted by A. Haikara, T. Sarlin and S. Home on behalf of the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention

Summary
A Subgroup of the EBC Brewing Science Group evaluated and tested an empirical method for the determination of gushing tendency of malt. Although all the details of the procedure were carefully standardised and the same beer brand sent to all the participants the precision of the method was not acceptable for the inclusion in Analytica-EBC.
