Brewery News
USA: Beer imports increased 6.5% in 2005, craft beers hiked by 9%

Sales in the U.S. beer industry sagged 0.4% last year to 2.826 billion cases, falling back to 2002 sales levels, PRNewswire released October 03. But all was not flat among brewers: imports continued to attract consumers and grew by a healthy 6.5%, and craft beers surged 9% in 2005, after a 7% boost in 2004.

"Beer consumption continues to lag behind the exceptional growth we're seeing in spirits and wine, but consumers do seem to be trading up to more expensive imports and crafts, which is good news for profitability," said Charles Forman, vice president, group publisher for the Adams Beverage Group.

Both distilled spirits and wine consumption continued their upward climb in 2005. Beer has not kept pace with spirits and wine consumption, which have benefited from new product launches, cocktail culture, glamorous advertising campaigns and increased availability.

Among imports, Mexican beers lead the way: 10 Mexican beers grew a minimum of 4.5% each, with Corona, the leading imported beer, now the sixth best-selling overall in the United States, up 8.1%. Among craft beers, volume leaders Yuengling grew 11%, Sam Adams up 2.2% and Sierra Nevada by 3.5%.

India: Danish brewer Carlsberg eyes Indian market

Danish brewer Carlsberg said October 04 it was working to enter India to keep step with competitors vying for a share of the fast-growing market, Reuters communicated October 04.

"We are meeting with authorities and potential partners ... because it's an interesting market for Carlsberg," the brewer's spokesman Jens Peter Skaarup said.

Skaarup said no decisions had yet been made but added that the Danish brewer was considering if it would enter the market alone or as part of a joint venture. "We are very thorough before we enter a new market and need to be sure we have the right setup," he said.

On Wednesday, the Economic Times reported that U.S.-based Anheuser Busch will take a 50 percent stake in Crown Breweries, a new venture in Hyderabad, investing 1 billion Indian rupees ($21.8 million).

Canada: Sapporo Breweries extended CA$400 million takeover bid for Sleeman Breweries Ltd. to October 17

Sapporo Breweries unit of Japan's Sapporo Holdings Ltd. said October 02 it would extend its CA$400 million takeover bid for Canadian beer maker Sleeman Breweries Ltd. to Oct. 17, Reuters communicated October 02.

The cash offer of CA$17.50 a share was set to expire at 5 p.m. October 02. Sapporo said one of the conditions of its bid was to obtain regulatory and government approval before it concluded the deal and it had yet to obtain the green light from Industry Canada.

"Sapporo and Sleeman are continuing to work with the Investment Review Division of Industry Canada (IRD) in connection with its review of the proposed acquisition of Sleeman by Sapporo," the Japanese firm said.

"Sapporo has submitted proposed undertakings to the IRD, which are currently being considered by the IRD."

The cash offer represented a lofty 50 percent premium over the price of Sleeman shares on May 11, a day before the Guelph, Ontario-based brewer announced it was looking for a buyer.

Sleeman is already brewing Sapporo beer in Canada under a licensing agreement.

Sleeman, Canada's third biggest brewer with about 7 percent of the country's beer market, has been suffering from fierce price competition in the past year and hired an investment firm in ...

UK: BBH to overtake Heineken on the British beer market

British brewer Scottish & Newcastle has pledged that its Russian business, BBH, will overtake Europe's biggest brewing company, Heineken, in the next five years, The Hamilton Spectator posted October 02.

Little known by drinkers outside the former Soviet Union, BBH is preparing to launch a major assault on the U.K. market.

BBH's Baltika beers are among the most popular in Russia, but just one, Baltika 3, is sold in Britain. It is available only as an imported brand.

BBH's chairman, John Nicolson, confirmed the group was looking to bolster its position in Britain.

"Driving a Russian brand, with all the imagery we can build round it, it should be very powerful," he said. "We're now looking at turning it from a seeding opportunity to a development opportunity. Russia is bigger on the world stage again. It's the right time to drive this brand."

Scottish & Newcastle is having to hold discussions with BBH about brewing Baltika in Britain because it does not own the business outright. BBH is a joint venture between Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg, the Danish brewer. BBH has been a massive success for both companies. Sales soared as Russians turned from vodka.

USA: Boston Beer Co. shares downgraded after there was no upside to retain the ‘overweight’ rating

Shares of Boston Beer Co. fell October 02 after a Prudential Equity Group analyst said there was not enough upside to retain the brewer of Sam Adams brews' current rating and downgraded the stock, The Boston Globe’s Business Ticker posted October 02.

Analyst Cheryl Gedvila had some positive words for the brewer.

"We continue to believe that Boston Beer is in the sweet spot of the beer industry as consumers migrate from mainstream beer into the higher-end craft and import categories, also known as 'better beer,'" Gedvila wrote.

Gedvila said that all such activity by brewers including Anheuser-Busch, SABMiller, Molson Coors, and Heineken is spurring the migration and that Boston Beer is in a good place to capitalize on the trend.

However, she noted that Boston Beer shares are up 31.4 percent from the beginning of the year, so she downgraded the company to "Neutral Weight" from "Overweight" based on valuation.

Malt News
Australia: ABB Grain’s new malt house lifts company’s national malting capacity by about 20 per cent to 500,000 tonnes

Australia’s alarming poor harvest and soaring grain prices have proved ill-timed for ABB Grain, which has just brought on line a $46 million expansion of its barley malting operations, The Age unveiled October 03 (figures in AU$ unless stated).

The new malthouse in the Perth suburb of Forrestfield, rated one of the world's most advanced malthouses, will be officially opened on October 20.

But construction was completed three months ago and the facility is now operating at its new capacity of 200,000 tonnes a year of malt.

That is more than double its previous 90,000 tonnes, sucking in about 20,000 tonnes of barley a month, and lifting ABB Grain's national malting capacity by about 20 per cent to 500,000 tonnes.

Andrew Gee, chief operating officer of ABB Grain subsidiary Joe White Maltings said the fundamentals for the expansion of the export-focused plant remained sound because of projected long-term growth in demand in Asia for malt, a major ingredient in beer.
But this season was shaping as a "bloody disaster", with barley prices extremely high in anticipation of the below-average crop about to be harvested in Australia. Europe and Canada had also had smaller crops.

Mr Gee said he was paying above $270 a tonne for ...

EU: Maltsters booked export licences for 479,000 t in July-September 2006

In July – September EU maltsters booked export licences for 479,000 t, only 8,000 tons less than last year, experts released October 02. It is an open question, whether the EU malting industry can repeat last year's exports of 2.2 Mill. t. At present many maltsters do not offer malt at all or only limited quantities to international and domestic customers, as they cannot find the barley cover.

On the other hand world beer sales in 2006 are exceptionally good, new malt capacities in Argentina and Australia do not fully compensate the larger malt demand, therefore Europeans have a great chance to maintain their export volume.

Australian and Canadian maltsters have regained market shares, but are now almost sold out. Price levels of EU malt are EUR 330.-/340.- ex works for spring barley malt, (in exceptional places offers are EUR 400.-). Corresponding FOB levels are EUR 350.-/360.-. Esterel malt is quoted at EUR 330.- FOB, in bulk.

Barley News
Australia: ABB Grain-owned Joe White Maltings will cease to accept Dhow grain as malting variety from 2007

ABB Grain’s wholly owned malting subsidiary, Joe White Maltings, will cease accepting Dhow grain as a malting barley variety from the 2007/2008 harvest, ABB Grain released September 27.

The decision is the result of continued, reduced South Australian production of the variety and availability of more suitable varieties, including Baudin and the higher yielding, more disease-resistant Flagship.

ABB Grain will continue receiving Dhow but from the 2007/2008 harvest will segregate it as feed barley.

Joe White Maltings’ chief operating officer, Andrew Gee, said that Dhow was being superseded by varieties more suitable for malting.

“There’s been a steady move by maltsters around Australia to reduce the number of varieties used for malt making and, from Joe White’s point of view, Baudin is a variety we particularly can’t get enough of,” Mr Gee said.

“Also, Flagship, which was developed by the University of Adelaide’s barley breeding program, and commercialised by ABB Grain, has far greater potential than Dhow, being specifically developed for large brewing and malting markets in Japan, China and South East Asia.”

Mr Gee said ABB was sending a clear market signal to growers of its preferred varieties that best suited the needs of customers in Australia and overseas.

“We’re asking growers to seriously look at ...

Hops News
USA: S.S. Steiner hop warehouse was devastated by fire on October 02

On Monday, October 2nd, a warehouse in Yakima, Washington with hops belonging to one of the largest merchant groups in the world caught fire and burned to the ground. Douglas MacKinnon told E-malt that the burned hop warehouse was located at the HopUnion facility although it was a privately owned warehouse and contained no HopUnion hops inside. In the warehouse were reportedly 10,000 bales of hops.

Mr MacKinnon, commented:
“Immediately that evening, in response to the fire, the price for super alpha hops started to increase. Those few American growers still with hops left to sell were not anxious to sell knowing that the market this year is extremely tight and that the price would certainly continue to rise.

No word is yet available as to the type of hops that were destroyed or the quantity of alpha acid that was lost due to the fire. Since it was the price for super alpha hops that began to rise immediately following the fire and since it is typically the super alpha hops that are most prone to spontaneous combustion, we may assume that a good portion of the hops contained in the warehouse were alpha type hops.”

Douglas MacKinnon is chairman ...
