Brewery News
USA: Anheuser – Busch Cos. reported increased sales and earnings for the third quarter and nine months of 2006

Led by strong domestic beer revenues and earnings, Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. reported October 25 that third quarter 2006 net sales increased 4.7 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding a one-time litigation settlement in 2005) increased 7.9 percent. For the nine months of 2006, net sales increased 5.3 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding one-time items in both years) improved 7.1 percent.

“We are pleased with our earnings results to date,” said Patrick Stokes, president and chief executive officer of the company. “Earnings growth for the company’s domestic beer business accelerated in the quarter, with pretax income up 7 percent. Beer shipments to wholesalers increased 1.1 percent in the third quarter while revenue per barrel 2/ was up 2.8 percent versus last year. Productivity improvement initiatives, along with somewhat lesser energy cost increases, have helped mitigate continuing cost pressures. In addition, our international beer segment, led by Grupo Modelo, and our entertainment segment are having outstanding years. We expect Anheuser-Busch’s positive performance to continue through the end of the year and our earnings to continue to improve in 2007.”

Consistent with the pattern for 2006 pricing actions, the company plans to implement increases on the majority of its beer volume in ...

Germany: Flavoured beer accounts for less than 5% of the beer market but is gaining steadily in popularity

Germany, long considered the centre of the beer world, still has a thirst for the amber liquid, but a growing number of people are turning to flavoured beers, according to figures released October 27, reports said October 27.

The Federal Statistics Office said 1.2 million hectolitres of beer flavoured with Coca-Cola, fruit juices or other non-alcoholic additives were sold in the third-quarter of 2006, a 28.9 percent jump over the corresponding period a year ago.

Total beer consumption for the period was 29.6 million hectolitres, 2.2 percent more than a year ago.

Although flavoured beers account for only 4.2 percent of the market, they are growing in popularity, particularly among young people, according to the German Brewers Association.

Ukraine: The brewing sector has dropped by one third in September 2006

Beer exports shortened by 32.6% or by 114,962 hl in September 2006, The Russian Brewers Union released October 25 citing the Ukrainian Statistics Commission. For the same month, beer exports recorded a 6.5% decrease year-on-year, meaning by 16,592 hl.

In January-September, bee shipments performed a general 20.2% increase year-on-year, meaning by 411,438 hl and totaled 2.445 million hl worth 66.09 million US$.

As it was mentioned before, in August 2006, beer exports hiked by 9.3% (+29,900 hl) against July 2006 reaching 352,683 hl worth US$9.70 million.

In 2005, the Ukrainian beer shipments increased by 20.7% year-on-year (+446,805 hl) and totaled 2.609 million hl worth US$67.67 million.

Kiev-based Obolon brewery is still the Ukrainian leading beer exporter.

Mexico: Femsa is expected to report 3Q 2006 net profit growth of 28%

Mexico's Femsa, the largest soft drink and beer company in Latin America, is expected to post a 28 percent rise in third-quarter net profit as revenues jump on the back of higher beer sales at home and abroad, Reuters communicated October 25.

A Reuters survey of five analysts forecast, on average, that Femsa would report a net profit of 2.193 billion pesos ($199 million), up from 1.708 billion pesos a year before.

"We expect Femsa to report consolidated real revenue growth of 14.7 percent, including beer domestic volume growth of 3.5 percent and export volume growth of 9 percent," Deutsche Bank said in a note.

Femsa brews Tecate, Sol and Dos Equis brands and its soft drinks affiliate, Coca-Cola Femsa, is the second-largest Coke bottler in the world.

Femsa is also expected to report a sterling performance in its retail unit, a chain of convenience stores known as Oxxo, which has been its star performer for several quarters.

BBVA-Bancomer said in a note it expects sales at Oxxo, which sells Femsa's beers and Coke products alongside snacks, to rise 21 percent from a year before. The brokerage expects Femsa to announce it opened around 150 locations in the quarter.

But margins are seen being hit by ...

Canada: 2006-07 Pool Return Outlook for malting barley moves higher by CA$/t 11 for two-row and CA$/t 7 for six-row varieties

The Canadian Wheat Board released October 26 its Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2006-07 crop year (in store Vancouver or St. Lawrence). The Pool A feed barley PRO is up $/t 28 over last month, while malting barley PROs are up by $/t 11 for two-row and $/t 7 for six-row (figures in CA$ unless stated).

World prices for feed grains have moved up significantly over the last month, driven by the drought-reduced crop in Australia, tightening of supplies out of the Black Sea region and strong feed grain demand.

October PRO:
1 CW - Pool A: $/t 170.00
September PRO:
1 CW - Pool A: $/t 142.00

The drought-reduced Australian barley production and the ongoing tight supply demand balance in the EU have been the major factors responsible for world malting barley prices moving higher over the past month. Tight feed grain supplies have pushed feed prices higher, narrowing the spreads between feed and malting barley. Higher prices are meeting with resistance from importers as they look to lower-priced options, including adjuncts and their own domestic barley supplies.

Australia: ABARE said 2006/07 barley crop will be down by 64% year-on-year because of severe draught

The nation's top commodities forecaster, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE), released October 27 its revised crop production figures for 2006/07. Production of barley is tipped to suffer, The Age posed October 27.

ABARE says the barley crop is forecast to be 3.6 million tonnes this financial year, down 64 per cent on a year ago.

The downward revision of crop numbers is expected to wipe $6.2 billion from the value of production of the three key commodities in 2005/06. The figure is 35 per cent lower than 2005/06.

ABARE acting executive director Karen Schneider said the effect of the fall in crop sizes would have an impact on the broader economy.

"Taking into account this latest revision to the farm sector forecasts and the flow on effects on the rest of the Australian economy, the drought is estimated to reduce economic growth in Australia in 2006/07 by around 0.7 percentage points from what would otherwise have been achieved," she said.

And ABARE is not optimistic about the outlook for summer rains.

"The rainfall outlook for summer crops is not promising," it said.

"The chances of exceeding the median rainfall for the November-January period are between 30 and 40 per cent for northern NSW ...

China & France: French malting barley exports to China will increase to 500,000 t per year

French malting barley exporters have pledged a fivefold boost in their supplies to China to satisfy rocketing demand from the nation's brewers.

Jean-Jacques Vorimore, president of France Export Cereals, said malting barley annual supplies would rise over the next few years from the current 100,000 t to 500,000 t, China View learned October 27 form China Daily.

Speaking at a recent seminar in Wuhan, the capital of Central China's Hubei Province, Vorimore said that France, one of the world's major malting barley suppliers, aims to become a regular long-term source for China.

"We plan to bring our barley exports to China to one-third of China's total imports," he added.

"China has become the world's largest brewer and consumer of beer, and it requires a stable supply of quality malting barley. There is huge potential for the industry in the two nations to cooperate," said Vorimore.

Australia and Canada have been China's major sources of barley for almost a decade. French barley is usually imported when, due to seasonal factors, there is no more good-quality malting barley from these two countries.

Surging transportation costs and the falling US dollar have made French barley more expensive in recent years, driving away many ...
