Brewery News
Romania: European Food & Drinks’ owned brewery in Draganesti becomes the largest in the country

The brewery in Draganesti (Bihor county), one of European Food's assets, tripled its production capacity to an annual volume of 5 million hectolitres this year, which makes it the largest brewery in Romania at the moment. As a comparison, the beer consumption amounted to 15.2 million hectolitres last year, Ziarul Financiar posted November 07.

Ioan Micula said he received propositions to purchase several beer production facilities from Hungary, as well as from other countries in the region, but a decision was made to invest in the facility in Draganesti, so as to ensure a synergy within European Food & Drinks group.

"The brewery is one of the main assets owned by European Food & Drinks. It was appraised at some €400 million by one of the major banks in Romania this autumn," Ioan Micula, the chairman of European Group, who owns European Food & Drinks group together with Viorel Micula, told Ziarul Financiar.

The brewery owned by the group started production in 2003, with an initial capacity of 1 million hectolitres, but it will be officially opened next year. Ioan Micula estimated investments worth some 100 million euros at the end of last year, to boost the factory's production capacity, ...

UK: S&N continued to gain share in a difficult UK market

Scottish & Newcastle's results for the third quarter of the year have been robust, showing a continuation of recent trends, the company posted on November 7th. BBH and its Asian businesses delivered strong growth. S&N continued to gain share in a difficult UK market, while in the Western European markets it has seen a mixed performance due to an overall weak consumer environment.

S&N has benefited from the continued focus on brand building and innovation. The rollout of SuperChilled technology throughout a number of European markets and innovations in cider, ‘beer with food' and zero alcohol beers underline the company's success in this area.

Despite variable consumer markets in Western Europe and increasing input prices we are confident that we will meet market expectations for 2006. We expect the current trends in trading conditions and cost pressures to continue into 2007, while the UK business will be adversely affected by the introduction of the smoking ban in England and Wales . As announced at the half year results, we expect that further group wide cost saving programmes – to be specified in February – will help to mitigate these pressures.

Our focus on cash remains high and looking forward we expect the business ...

China: Heineken co-owned Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd. secured HK$200 million loan for expansion

Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd said it has secured a HK$200 million, 48-month term bank loan which will be used 'to finance the business expansion and the working capital requirement of the company,' AFX News Limited released November 11.

Chairman Ye Xuquan said one of the conditions of the loan is for Guangdong Holdings Group Ltd and/or Heineken-APB (China) Pte Ltd (HAPBC) to own directly or indirectly at least 51 pct of the company's issued ordinary shares. He did not identify the lender.

As of November 03, Guangdong Holdings controls 52.60 pct of the issued share capital of Kingway, while HAPBC holds a stake of approximately 21.43 pct.

Chinese beer maker Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd. has signed an agreement to invest RMB 400 million in a new brewery in the southern province of Guangdong, China Knowledge released November 03. The new brewery located in Foshan City will boost the company’s total annual production capacity to 1.7 million t.

Germany: Government blocks the European Commission plan to make beer more expensive

Germany, fearing a backlash from beer drinkers back home, said November 07 it will block a European Union proposal to raise minimum tax rates on alcohol by 31 percent, Associated Press released November 07.

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Mirow told reporters that while Berlin is not against an alcohol tax in general, it did not want to burden German beer drinkers - who already face a hike on standard sales tax starting in January - with an additional fee.

"Germany is not against alcohol tax but Germany is against beer becoming more expensive," Mirow said. "We have made clear that because of the sales tax raise, we have no manoeuvring space."

The Czech Republic, Latvia and Lithuania also spoke out at EU finance ministers' talks against the higher tax.

German diplomats said it was "an emotional issue" that Germany could only support if beer was exempted. Diplomats said Spain, Portugal, Italy and Cyprus also want opt-outs that won't raise the cost of their national drinks.

However, the European Commission so far has refused to bend to their wishes. Ministers need to vote unanimously for any changes to the tax law, so any veto would torpedo the plan. They are likely to return to the issue ...

USA: Boston Beer reports record third quarter volume, revenue and earnings

The Boston Beer Company, Inc. achieved third quarter earnings per diluted share of $0.41, a 41% increase over the third quarter 2005. The Company posted third quarter net revenue of $75.9 million, an increase of 20.0% over the same period last year. The net revenue increase in the third quarter was primarily driven by an 18.9% core shipment volume increase. For the nine months ended September 30, 2006, the Company's earnings per diluted share were $1.10, an increase of $0.19 over 2005. Net revenue increased by 22.2% to $212.1 million during the first nine months of 2006 as compared to the same period 2005.

Distributor sales of the Boston Beer brands to retail (depletions) increased approximately 15.0% from the third quarter 2005. Jim Koch, Chairman and Founder of the Company, said, "2006 has been an exciting year for Samuel Adams and the Craft beer category. Samuel Adams is the leading brand in the Craft beer category, which we believe is the fastest growing beer category in the United States. The third quarter 2006 was another quarter of double-digit depletions growth for the Company. I believe that our current 'Take Pride in Your Beer' advertising campaign speaks to beer drinkers about the ...

Poland: Heineken's Grupa Zywiec will close its Bydgoszcz brewery

Grupa Zywiec, Polish brewing group, in which Heineken NV holds a majority stake, has decided to close down its Bydgoszcz brewery after Grupa Zywiec failed to find a buyer for the unit, AFX News posted on November 7th.

Grupa Zywiec commented: “Increasing competition on the Polish beer market forces the beer manufacturers to reduce and optimize production costs on a permanent basis”. However, 'in spite of extensive efforts', it added, 'it has become clear that production costs in Bydgoszcz Brewery cannot be reduced to acceptable levels'.

Malt News
EU & World: The risk of further increases in malt prices is hanging on

Inside the EU Germany and the U.K. still have a large open malt demand. Prices were around the mark of EUR 400.- at the end of October, but run the risk of further increases after the new price explosion in barley markets.

In international markets Taiwan issued a purchase tender for 64,000 tons of malt, Vietnam is looking for several 10,000 tons. Most other buyers are interested in smaller lots, because they need additional quantities after excellent beer sales, or they keep testing the market in disbelief of the situation.

Russia and the Ukraine are lucky to have become almost self-sufficient over the past years, however, Russia will need some small imports during 2007.

China managed to establish itself as a malt exporter, helped by lack of attractive offers from other origins, but their dependence on imported barley will restrict also their possibilities in the months to come.

Barley News
EU: Feed barley exports will probably accelerate and lead to very tight supplies at the end of the crop year

There have only been minor changes of crop statistics since analysts’ report from October 2, the IGC puts the EU barley crop at 54.4 million tonnes. Internal feed barley markets are very firm, because of larger feed demand. According to analysts, due to the situation in Australia and the Ukraine EU feed barley exports will probably accelerate and lead to very tight supplies at the end of the crop year.

A price comparison: Intervention price EUR 101.31, market FOB Creil EUR 130.-, FOB Rouen EUR 147.-. The EU has liberated 476,000 tons of their intervention stocks of 1.5 million tonnes for sale to domestic markets in order to dampen the bullish market trend.

World: Analysts reported the latest deals on the barley market

The AgriNews’ Grains and Oilseeds Report of November 03 said US barley exports (during October 30-November 03) for 2006/07 (Jun/May) are at 318,000 t (increase 2,000 t for the last week) of which 247,000 t to Japan, 24,000 t to Algeria, 15,000 t to Canada plus 18,000 t to unknown destinations.

The EU markets were in a total holiday period during October 30-November 03 and with no meeting in Brussels the replacement levels have held about unchanged. With no export demand they market has no difficult to remain dull.

There is nothing new to report for the Black Sea region, exporters are just executing old sale contracts. Ukraine government has granted the full 2006 export quota for barley, 600,000 t, to at least four companies.

Japan bought 20,000 t of Australian malting barley for January. Jordan placed a tender, November 8th, for 100,000 t feed barley for December.

Turkey, await result, 110kt white and 15kt black barley for Nov/Dec. Sellers stated they had bids from 12 companies and had accepted bids to maximum $190.63.

The period between October 30 and November 03 was quite dully for the barley market and analysts see no reason for the next days to be any better. Third ...
