Brewery News
Vietnam: The country is expected to consume 17 million hl in 2006 and 27 million hl of beer per year by 2010

VietnamNet Bridge reported November 12 that the Vietnam Beer, Liquor and Drinks Association (BLDA) has warned small brewery workshops will be hard pressed after Vietnam officially joins the WTO.

According to the Ministry of Industry (MOLthere are some 300 operational brewery workshops nationwide which have the designed capacity of 17million hl a year. Only 19 workshops are running at full capacity of more than 20mil litres a year, and 15 have the capacity of more than 150,000 hl, while the majority of the workshops can produce less than 1mil litres a year.

The currently applied luxury tax rate imposed on locally bottled beer products and imports is 75%, while the tax rate on fresh and draught beer is 30% for 2006-2007, and will be 40% for 2008 and afterwards. If the new tax rates are applied, local brewery workshops will certainly incur losses and face big difficulties in their production and business.

MOL said that only the workshops with the capacity of more than 1 million hl in Vietnam use modern technologies and are installed with modern equipment imported from Germany, Italy and the US. The workshops with the capacity of more than 200,000 hl are now also trying to upgrade their capabilities. ...

Sales volume of all production - 28.6 million hectoliters
Net sales – EUR1.338 million

At present the process of merging “Vena”, ”Pikra”, “Yarpivo” and “Baltika Breweries” has entered its final stage. For the first time the basic financial indicators and performance results are presented at the level of the Baltika Group as a whole and include the consolidated results of “Baltika Breweries”, “Vena”, “Pikra” and “Yarpivo.” The merger process is proceeding according to plan and its completion, as was announced previously, is expected by the end of 2006. Baltika Group is finishing up the integration of production, sales, distribution and administration. The merger confirms the position of “Baltika Breweries” as one of the largest FMCG companies in Russia and one of the largest breweries in the world. Now the significant positive financial effect of operational integration can be observed and the advantages of ...

USA: The craft beer segment takes the lead with 17% growth in January-September 2006

A third quarter report from Information Resources Inc. tells a very good story for craft beer as tracked in off-premises sales outlets including grocery, drug, liquor and convenience stores.

Craft beer sales rose by 17% in January-September 2006 year-on-year, The Brewers Association said November 15. At the same time, the overall beer category grew by 1.9% in the same period while beer imports were up 10 percent.

According to the report, analysts attribute this trend to consumers continuing to trade up and demanding variety in beer flavor. Consequently, craft beer takes the lead in growth in all channels (grocery, drug, liquor, convenience.). Imported beer followed the craft beer segment in growth.

Craft sales growth in previous years:

2005 - 8%,
2004 - 5%
2003 - 2.3%

Most popular craft styles (with dollar share of total craft):
Pale Ale - 17.9%
Seasonal beers - 12.5%
Amber Ale - 11.2%
Amber Lager - 11.0%
Wheat Beers - 8.8%
IPA - 6.1%
Others - 32.5%

Australia: Lion Nathan reported a 3% increase for the 2006FY

Australia's second-largest brewer, Lion Nathan Ltd., has lifted underlying Net Profit after Tax by 3.2% to AU$ 257.4 million for the year to 30 September 2006 but warned higher commodities prices and business reorganisation costs would hit fiscal 2007 earnings growth, Reuters communicated November 13.

The company said it expects fiscal 2007 net profit of AU$245-AU$260 million ($188-$200 million), excluding one-time and significant items, a touch below expectations of AU$260.7 million in a survey of analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Shares in Lion Nathan, 46 percent-owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery Co., fell 2.6 percent to AU$8.16, while Australia's broader share market dipped 0.2 percent.

"I think people are just disappointed with the outlook statement for next year," said CommSec analyst Pierre Grobler.

"The guidance is for largely flat to slightly lower operating performance, which is disappointing, but I think given some of the initiatives that they've started and certainly the commodity cost pressures, it seems quite reasonable," he added.

Lion Nathan, which brews Tooheys, Hahn, XXXX and Steinlager beers, said November 13th that annual net profit before one-off items was AU$257.4 million, up 3.2 percent and just beating market forecasts for AU$254.2 million.

Lion Nathan mainly competes in Australia against ...

Domestic beer consumption of Bulgaria increased by 13.1% year-on-year to 4.3 mln hectoliters in the first 10 months of 2006, Dnevnik.bg communicated on November 12th. However, October sales fell 21.1% month-on-month to 340,900 hectoliters, shows data released by the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria (UBB).

Carlsberg Bulgaria, the runner-up in October with 93,028 hectolitres, is catching up to Kamenitza in the YTD rankings with 1.024 mln hectolitres but has still some way to go to overtake the 1.3 mln hectoliters sold by its InBev-owned rival in the first 10 months of the year. Kamenitza was no.3 in October with sales of 91,364 hectolitres.

InBev, Heineken and Carlsberg Bulgaria own 76% of the total beer market.

Barley News
Canada: Barley exports for 2006-2007 are forecasted to decrease by 23%

According to the Grains and Oilseeds Outlook released on November 10th, the Canadian barley production for 2006-2007 decreased by 20%, due to lower area and yields, resulting in a 16% decrease in supply. Exports are forecast to fall by 23%, as higher malting barley exports only partly offset lower feed barley exports.

Despite lower exports and domestic use, carry-out stocks are forecast to fall sharply. The average off-Board feed barley price is projected to rise by CA$30/t. The CWB PRO for No. 1 CW feed barley for Pool A in 2006-07 is CA $170/t, vs. CA$131/t for 2005-06 Pool B. The PRO for SS2R malting barley is CA$200/t vs. CA$171/t for 2005-06, due to lower exportable supplies from major competitors and strong import demand from China and the US.

China: Barley imports stood at 1.777 million t in January-September 2006

Analysts reported October 31 that China's malting barley imports in January-September were 1.777 million t, of which almost 1.4 million t from Australia, the balance from Canada. The annual demand of malting barley is 4 million t.

After the Australian crop failure China will be obliged to draw its supplies from its own crop, from Canada and maybe from Europe after the harvest of 2007. There is a danger that the lack of supplies and high barley prices will drive Chinese brewers to further increase the already high percentage of adjuncts.

USA: North Dakota harvested 995,000 acres of barley in 2006, the lowest acreage level in decades

The federal Agriculture Department is projecting U.S. barley production at 180 million bushels in 2006, the lowest since 1936. The agency said the nation’s farmers harvested 2.9 million acres of barley, the lowest number since 1885. The Independent record published November 12.

Barley is primarily used for malting and brewing, and for livestock feed. Less than 2 percent of the domestic crop is used as food.

North Dakota is the nation’s largest barley producing state, usually accounting for about a third of the total U.S. crop. The state’s producers say North Dakota’s climate and soil yield barley that produces higher-quality beer than barley grown in other areas of the United States.

The state harvested 995,000 acres of barley this year, the lowest level since the 1930s, said Steve Edwardson, administrator of the North Dakota Barley Council.

Drought this year in North Dakota ‘‘hurt yields a bit — but overall it was a good quality crop,’’ Edwardson said.

North Dakota produced 48.7 million bushels of barley this year. Idaho produced 42.8 million bushels, followed by Montana’s 31 million bushels, Edwardson said.

‘‘With stocks and production at record lows, we’re going to see some increased prices, and hopefully, some increased production because of it,’’ he said.
