Brewery News
China: Budejovicky Budvar NP registered the "Budejovicky Budvar" trademark despite Anheuser-Busch disapproval

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar NP said November 15 it successfully registered its trademark in China, despite a legal challenge from U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc., the Associated Press communicated November 15.

China's High People's Court, in Beijing, on Oct. 18 rejected an Anheuser-Busch appeal against Budvar's registering the "Budejovicky Budvar" trademark, and upheld a previous court decision allowing Budvar to use both a written and a graphic version of its trademark in China, the Czech company said.

Budvar said it was informed about the decision by its lawyers on November 14.

According to the Chinese court, Budvar's trademark cannot be confused with Anheuser-Busch's trademarks registered in China, Budvar said. The ruling, which Budvar said was final, was the latest development in a century-long global trademark dispute between the two breweries, and gives to the Czech company a green light to sell its lager on the fast growing Chinese market for the first time.

"The trademarks' registration enables us to start exports of our beer to China without risks," Budvar spokesman Petr Samec said. "In the long term, we consider the Chinese market a good business opportunity." Budvar exports its production to 50 countries worldwide.

"We are disappointed the Beijing High Court has decided that ...

Denmark: Royal Unibrew reported a 10% increase in sales for 3Q 2006

Scandinavia’s second largest brewery, Royal Unibrew, reported a Q3 profit before tax of DKK 161.2 million compared to DKK 133.3 million in 2005, which is an increase of 21 per cent. However, the analysts do not expect this will cause any drastic share price rises, Borsen reported November 17.

Royal Unibrew maintains its expectations for a profit for the full year of DKK 320-340 million, the company wrote in its stock exchange announcement.

Profit before tax for the first three quarters of the year amounts to DKK 205.2 compared to DKK 186.2 million in 2005 which was an increase of 11 per cent.

Albani, Ceres and Maribo are three of the Danish main products in the group, which sells its products on 65 markets in among others Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, Northern Germany, Poland, Italy, and Canada.

Sales of Royal Unibrew’s products rose by 10 per cent to 1.8 million hl in the third quarter compared to the same quarter 2005, which the management itself describes as satisfactory as the growth is generally an expression of organic growth.

In the first nine months of the year sales rose 12 per cent to 4.9 million hl which was due to an increase on the Polish ...

Czech Republic: Plzensky Prazdroj opened new filling room worth CZK1 billion

The largest Czech brewery Plzensky Prazdroj opened November 16 a new filling room worth CZK 1 billion, the biggest investment in its history, Prague Monitor published November 16.

Filling room manager Josef Prochazka told CTK the construction cost CZK 450 million and technologies CZK 550 million. The new facility should help Prazdroj meet rising foreign demand for Pilsner Urquell beer.

"The new filling room will have two lines, one for all types of bottles with a capacity of 60,000 bottles an hour and the other for cans with a capacity of up to 38,000 cans an hour," Prochazka said.

The filling room launched full operation immediately after Czech President Vaclav Klaus cut the golden tape today.

Czech Beer and Malt Association head Jan Vesely said this was the most modern filling room in Europe. After Prazdroj has completed the whole facility with nine lines, it will also be the largest one, he added.

South Africa's SABMiller, which owns the brewery, has invested CZK 11.4 billion since its entry into Plzensky Prazdroj. It now plans to build another filling line for bottles and yet another one for kegs.

The company expects to invest CZK 1.2 billion this year and raise output of its premium lager from 1.5 ...
