USA: InBev and Anheuser-Busch reach agreement for European import brands in United States

Anheuser-Busch will become the exclusive U.S. importer of a number of InBev’s premium European import brands, including Stella Artois®, Beck’s®, Bass Pale Ale®, Hoegaarden®, Leffe® and other select InBev brands, the two brewers announced on November 30.

Effective February 1, 2007, Anheuser-Busch will import these premium brands and be responsible for their sales, promotion and distribution in the United States. These InBev brands, which had sales volumes of about 1.9 million hectoliters (or about 1.5 million barrels) in 2005, will be available to Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. wholesaler network where possible.

InBev’s Canadian brands, including Labatt Blue® and Labatt Blue Light®, as well as Brahma®, are not included in the agreement. Working closely with Labatt Breweries of Canada, InBev USA will continue to market and sell the Labatt and Brahma brands through a separate distribution network.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

EU & Canada: EU seeks WTO talks with Canada over 'discriminatory' new wine and beer tax

The European Union said Wednesday, November 29th, it will seek World Trade Organization (WTO) talks over Canada's "discriminatory" wine and beer tax that it claims punishes European imports while giving Canadian drinks a free ride, according to Canadian Press and Associated Press.

"This measure is unfair and I urge Canada to end this discrimination against our products," said EU Farm Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel. "European wines and beers are second to none. We can compete with anyone as long as we have a level playing field on which to operate."

Beginning July 1, Canada has given excise tax relief to its own wine and beer while leaving intact rates on EU imports such as French wines and Belgian beer.

The new tax rules are due to be formally adopted next month - after Parliament gives its backing - and applied retroactively from July, although in practice the measures are already in place.

The European Commission said it hoped it could find a solution at the WTO, saying it had already "expressed its concern" to Ottawa in recent months.

Mexico & USA: Grupo Modelo plans $520 mln new brewery on US border

Mexico's largest beer maker, Grupo Modelo, said Thursday it plans to invest about $520 million in a new brewery in northern Mexico as demand for its beer grows at home and abroad, according to Houston Chronicle publication November 30th.

"The growth we have seen in the national and international markets makes us believe we will need additional capacity by 2010," Chief Executive Carlos Fernandez said at a news conference.

The new brewery will be located in the border city of Piedras Negras, in the state of Coahuila, across the Rio Grande from Texas, the release said. The company said the location, quality of water and infrastructure were considerations in choosing the site.

Modelo is the brewer of top U.S. import brand Corona. Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. has a stake of about 50 percent in the company.

Modelo will finance the construction of the brewery with its own resources, Fernandez said.

According to executives, most of the capacity at the new brewery will go to the export market, especially North America and Europe. The new brewery will add 260 million gallons to its annual capacity by the end of 2010, the company said.

Peru: SABMiller to expand Peru Brewery by 20 % to meet demand

SABMiller Plc, the world's third-biggest brewer, plans to spend $100 million to expand output at its Peruvian unit by 20 percent to meet rising demand, Bloomberg communicated on December 1st.

London-based SABMiller, which acquired the Union de Cervecerias Backus y Johnston SAA unit when it bought Bogota-based Grupo Empresarial Bavaria in 2004, is upgrading two of its six Peruvian brewhouses and is adding more distribution trucks and warehouses, Backus Chief Executive Robert Priday said in a Nov. 27 interview at his Lima office. The company expects to complete the expansion by the middle of next year.

The $5.6 billion purchase of Bavaria helped boost first-half net income by 22 percent to $790 million, or 52.6 cents a share. Latin America contributed to one-fifth of earnings before interest, tax and amortization as economic growth spurred consumer spending in the region.

``We're more than matching the growth of the total market in the country,'' Priday said. ``Our results in the first half of the year have exceeded our expectations.''

Peruvian beer consumption per capita has risen to 28 liters from 21 liters last year as a result of competition from Leuven, Belgium-based Inbev NV, the world's second-biggest brewer, he said.

Germany: Beer prices are forecast to rise

FIN24 published on November 29 that Germans will have to dig deeper into their pockets to buy a round of beer next year as a result of rising malt prices, soaring energy costs and the upcoming rise in value-added or sales tax (VAT), according to the head of one of the country's biggest breweries statement on November 29.

Radeberger chief executive Ulrich Kellmeyer estimated that consumers may have to pay €1 ($1.30) extra for a 20-bottle case of beer. "The market is going to have to get used to a price of &euros; 15 per case," Kellmeyer said.

Germans are among Europe's champion beer drinkers, with annual consumption reaching 129.4 litres for each person over 15 years last year, according to recent statistics. However, the trend has been pointing downwards in recent years, even if the World Cup soccer championships and the hot summer is likely to have led to an increase in beer sales this year of 0.8%. By contrast, the industry expects sales to decline by 2.5% in 2007.

Romania: Multinational beer companies saw a 20% increase in sales over the first nine months

Multinational companies on the Romanian beer market saw a 20% increase in sales over the first nine months of this year, exceeding sales reported in 2004 and reaching a volume almost equal to that of 2005, Ziarul Financiar published November 30.

The local branches of Heineken, SABMiller, InBev and Carlsberg sold 10 million hectolitres of beer in the first nine months of this year, against the 10.4 million hectolitres for the whole of 2005 and the 9.7 million hectolitres in 2004, according to data from the Romanian Brewers Association, which comprises the four multinational companies and represents 70% of the Romanian beer market.

In the first nine months of this year, the total beer market reached 13.5 million hectolitres. Calculated at an average price of 0.84-euro per litre of beer, the value of the market could stand at over 1.2 billion euros (shelf price). Last year, the beer market was estimated at some 600 million euros, calculated at the production price, though.

Russia: SUN Interbrew to build a malt plant in Siberia

The First Information System released on November 29 that SUN Interbrew is looking for a site in Siberia to construct a malt plant of the capacity of up to 200 thousand tons per annum. One of the most likely variants is the placement of the plant in the Altai Krai. By expert estimate, investments into the project are projected at up to USD100 million.

Australia: Drought cuts into GrainCorp profit

Higher grain deliveries helped barley, sorghum and canola marketer GrainCorp more than double its annual profit, New Digital Media published on December 01. But GrainCorp is still predicting a net loss of up to $30 million this financial year as drought conditions crimp its grain intake.

GrainCorp's net 2005-06 profit soared from $13.5million to $31.7million as grain receivals rose 16 per cent to 10.8 million tonnes.

Stripping out one-off items, including a $7.8million reset preference share distribution, underlying net profit rose 193 per cent to $39.5million, above its $35-37million forecast.

GrainCorp managing director Tom Keene said the group still expected a $20-30million net loss this year. "The outlook for the current year reflects the extensive drought conditions across the east coast and other states," he said.

He said 1.9 million tonnes of the anticipated total of 2-4 million tonnes for 2006/07 had so far been received in the grain system - and there were early indications for a strong summer crop planting if it rained.

World: Estimates of the low hop supply due to a poor 2006 crop

After this years’ harvest, the situation of the world hop market must be taken very seriously, said Stephan Barth – President of the German Hopunion e.V. at the Press Conference Brau Breviale 2006 in Nuremberg on November 16th, 2006.

He commented: “Serious estimates of the low supply due to a poor 2006 crop; calculate between 700 - 1,300 tons alpha acid or approximately 8.6% - 15.5% of the annual demand. Should this “worst case” scenario prove itself to be completely accurate, the low yield of the hop market would not just limit itself to crop year 2006, but would also establish a worldwide structural under supply in general.

The supply situation of the international brewing industry was considered tight by hop distributors even before the harvest began. It was also published in several industry-related papers. The market for high alpha and bitter hops was viewed very critical, while the market for aroma hops was considered balanced at best.

Central Europe’s very hot summer in June and July however, had a devastating effect particularly on the usually early harvested varieties and a very rainy August lead to very poor crop results. In no other hop-growing area did the harvest results meet earlier estimates. ... More Info
