USA: Anheuser-Busch and Czech Brewer Budejovicky Budvar have formed a historic alliance in U.S. Market

After nearly a century of disagreements in certain parts of the world over rights to the Budweiser name for their beers, Anheuser-Busch and Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar have formed a historic alliance in which Anheuser-Busch will become the U.S. importer of Czechvar Premium Czech Lager, Anheuser-Busch press room reported on January 8.

The agreement gives Czechvar, currently sold in 30 states, access to Anheuser-Busch's marketing and sales expertise and wide-reaching U.S. distribution network. It gives Anheuser-Busch another European import as part of an aggressive push into high-end beer categories that has led to alliances with Grolsch, Tiger, Kirin and most recently InBev, which added Stella Artois, Beck's, Bass Pale Ale and other beers to its import portfolio.

The agreement does not impact existing litigation or trademark disputes between the two brewers in other countries, and they have agreed the partnership cannot be used to support either side in any trademark cases.

China: Total beer consumption in China grew by 33.56% between 2000 and 2006 and reached 30.47 bln litres

The Chinese beer market has become increasingly competitive, with companies spending much more on strong advertising campaigns, according to Research and Markets, January 9. This, combined with consumer having increasing amounts of leisure time, is creating the strong growth in demand with is helping to sustain the strong growth in sales which continue to be a feature of the market. Retail sales value rose from 53.36% of the volume market in 2000, to an estimated 55.63% in 2006. Total consumption of beer grew by 33.56% between 2000 and 2006 to reach a total market volume of 30.47 billion litres.

The Chinese beer market has grown at an astounding pace in recent years, spurred on by the massive levels of foreign investment in the market, along with the rise in the average levels of consumer spending in China, thanks to the economic reform policies of the government.

China has now overtaken the US to become the largest national beer market in the world. Thus China is an important market, which needs to be understood more clearly.

UK: Scottish & Newcastle to close bottling plant

Scottish & Newcastle PLC has announced plans to close its bottling operation at its Dunston brewery in Gateshead from next month, with the loss of 66 jobs, AFX reported on January 10.

The closure follows a decision by the UK-based brewer to axe returnable Newcastle Brown Ale bottles for the pub trade and introduce non-returnable bottles as used for the off-trade and export sales.

Chris Jowsey, managing director of Newcastle Federation Breweries said packaging the brand in two types of bottle 'impacts negatively on cost and operational efficiencies' at the Dunston brewery. He added: 'No other national beer brand sold by S&N UK or its competitors is available in returnable bottles and, after reviewing the very positive feedback from our recent customer trial, we have concluded that it is no longer necessary or economically viable to supply Newcastle Brown Ale in returnable bottles.'

Newcastle Brown Ale will continue to be brewed at the site but the company confirmed plans to review kegging operations, where 22 staff is employed, at Dunston in the light of the bottling line closure.

Japan: Kirin targets 5.6 pct rise in 2007 beer sales

Kirin Brewery Co. said in its Press Release on Wednesday, January 10, it plans to sell 5.6 percent more beer and beer-like drinks in 2007, helped by a launch of the first major beer in Japan in 17 years.

Year 2006 was characterized by a combined domestic market for beer, happo-shu and new genre contracted, influenced by Japan's aging and declining population, the diversification of individual tastes, alcohol tax revisions and other factors.

Despite this difficult market background, Kirin outperformed the industry and delivered its second consecutive year of growth recording sales of 187.10 million cases (up 4.8% year-on-year; 12.66 liters/case). Kirin Nodogoshi, which was launched in 2005, continued to perform well in 2006, and Kirin recorded year-on-year growth in happo-shu —despite a major decline in the happo-shu industry—due to proposing and launching products such as Kirin Enjuku that meet customers' expectations. In beer, Kirin has revitalized the market through its new value proposals for special premium beers* such as Kirin Ichiban Shibori Muroka.

Australia: Lion Nathan tax hit will not influence its operational profit

Lion Nathan has been hit with a tax bill of almost $30 million following an official audit of one of its subsidiaries, The Australian published on January 10.

However, Lion said the net cost of $27.6 million had been fully provided for in prior financial years and would have no impact on its operating profit outlook for 2007.

In fact, the company had overestimated the amount for which it might be liable to the tune of $9.5million, with the result that this "provision surplus" would be recorded as a one-off gain for the 2006-07 financial year.

Lion said this would help offset restructuring and investment costs of between $30 million and $40 million that it expected to incur this year.

The tax bill followed an audit by the Australian Tax Office of Lion subsidiary Lion Nathan Finance, relating to the deductibility of bad debts it racked up by funding other Lion subsidiaries.

The Tax Office has issued amended assessments for the 1999-2000 and 2001-02 financial years, amounting to $19.7 million in primary tax and $11.3 million in interest, the latter of which is tax-deductible.

Slovenia: State took control of Jagodinska Brewery

The state once again owns 51.1 percent of Jagodinska Brewery stock, B92 News reported on January 10.

The contract with the previous buyers, Novi Sad’s Pan Beer and Slovenian Infond Holding, which formed a consortium in order to buy the brewery, was terminated.

Minority shareholders and Jagodinska workers were officially notified that their protest, maintained for over a year, has been resolved through the cancelling of the previous contract.

Serbia’s Development Fund, with 45.7 percent, and Pensions Insurance Fund (PIO), with 5.4 percent of stock, now have the majority ownership of the company.

Jagodinska Brewery (Jagodinska Pivara) was sold on August 29, 2006, for 75,000 euros, while the buyers accepted to invest further 4.5 million euros as their contractual obligation.

The minority shareholders believe that the company’s market value exceeds 20 million euros.

EU: Malt production will probably be less than the domestic and export demand

EU statistics of the first four months of the crop year 2006/07 prove that Germany and the UK will produce much less malt than their "paper" capacities would allow, the total EU production will probably be less than the domestic and export demand, market analysts have recently commented.

EU malt export licence fixations in the period of July 1 - December 19, 2006, were 909,000 tons, about 80,000 tons less than a year ago. At the same pace of exports over the next 6 1/2 months exports would only amount to 1.95 million tonnes, 250,000 tons below last year.

World: The import demand of malting barley in the world will depend on China

The import demand of malting barley in the world outside the EU is 2.9 to 3.4 million tonnes.

The final figure will depend on China, which imported 2.2 million tonnes in 2006.

Canada will export 1.2 to 1.3 million tonnes, trifles will come from Australia, Argentina and the EU, but it is unclear, where a short of 1.0 to 1.5 million tonnes can be covered, not counting the short inside the EU.

World: Winter kill is now seen as a real threat for malting barley crop

On basis of present acreage estimates the malting barley crop of 2007 cannot fully compensate the shortfall of 2006.

According to market analysts, there is one big "IF": in case of large losses of winter grains due to sharp frost on grounds without snow cover the acreage of spring barley could be expanded much more than under normal circumstances. European, even Russian and Ukrainian weather has been so mild till mid December that winter kill is now seen as a real threat.
