Brewery News
Vietnam & Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries invests in 5th brewery in Vietnam

After sealing one of its largest acquisitions with the recent purchase of the Foster's breweries in Central and South Vietnam in September 2006, Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) is acquiring the assets of Quang Nam Brewery (QNB) as part of the ongoing expansion in one of its best performing markets, according to APB’s press release of January 11. This acquisition is executed via Vietnam Brewery Limited (VBL) in which APB owns a 60% stake.

To extend its presence and further tap on the beer market in Central Vietnam, VBL entered into an agreement with Quang Nam Electric Construction Company (QNEC) to establish a joint venture company, VBL (Quang Nam) Ltd (VBLQN). VBLQN will acquire the existing assets and business of QNB. It also intends to upgrade and expand the brewery's production capacity and will initially be involved in the production, marketing and distribution of "Larger" and "Larue" beer brands.

VBL will inject approximately US$11 million (approximately S$17 million) into VBLQN for its 80% stake in the latter while QNEC will inject approximately US$2.75 million in combination of cash and assets into VBLQN for the remaining 20% stake in VBLQN. QNEC is a state-owned enterprise in Vietnam under the direct management ...

Japan: Sapporo Breweries is expecting a 7% rise in 2007 Japanese sales

Sapporo Breweries Ltd. said it expects to sell 68 million cases of beer and beer-like beverages in Japan in 2007, up 7% from 2006, by aggressively marketing its premium beer lineup of Yebisu, Kyodo News International announced on January 11.

Sapporo, the country's No. 3 beer maker, said its sales in 2006 fell 10 percent to 63.83 million cases, mainly due to its poor sales of so-called "third-category" beer-like drinks. One case is equivalent to 12.66 liters of beer.

The Tokyo-based beer maker said its sales of cheap non-malt beer, using ingredients such as bean protein, stood at 16.63 million cases, down 76 percent from the previous year, although estimated industry-wide sales for such drinks saw an estimated increase of 21 percent during the same period.

While sales of regular beer and low-malt "happoshu" beer have been falling in Japan, the third-category beer products are rapidly growing as they are priced lower than beer due to a lower tax rate applied to them.

Also a new area growing recently in the Japanese beer market is higher-priced premium beer.

Sapporo said its 2006 sales of its Yebisu premium beer lineup hit an all-time high of 10.13 million cases since its introduction ...

Portugal: Anheuser-Busch loses the case on Budweiser brand name in Portugal

Europe's top human rights court rejected on Thursday a bid by U.S. brewer Anheuser-Busch to take control of the 'Budweiser' brand name in Portugal from Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar, according to Reuters, January 11.

The case is one of several legal clashes between the two brewers over use of the name in various countries.

The U.S. firm's distinctive red, white and blue-labelled bottles are more famous but the Czech firm says 'Budweiser' comes from 'Budweis', the name its home town Ceske Budejovice went by for centuries.

In 2001 the Portuguese Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Anheuser-Busch, ruling that the Czech firm's right to use the name was protected by a bilateral agreement between Portugal and what was then Czechoslovakia that came into force in 1987.

The St Louis, Missouri-based brewer took its case to the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that because it had applied for registration of the 'Budweiser' trademark in Portugal before the bilateral agreement came into force; it had the right to protection of its brand. But the Strasbourg-based court said Anheuser-Busch's main complaint was about how national law had been applied.

"In that connection, it reiterated that its function was not to take the ...

USA & Singapore: Tiger Beer exports to US grew by 142% through Anheuser-Busch

Asia Pacific Brewery’s collaboration with US beer distributor Anheuser-Busch resulted in a 142% growth of Tiger Beer export to the US in the financial year ending September 2006 compared to previous year, Channel NewsAsia announced on January 10.

Asia Pacific Brewery says the tie-up allows it to gain tremendous headway into the huge American beer market.

Tiger Beer is now available in 48 of the 50 US states through a network of 500 wholesalers.

Anheuser-Busch says it is leveraging on Tiger's Asian appeal and tapping into the fashion, food art and music industry for growth. Imported beers made up 12 percent of the total beer sold in the US, and is growing at 7 to 8 percent annually.

Romania: Tuborg Romania invested $16 mln in 2006

United Romania Breweries Bereprod (URBB) has invested nearly $16 mln in 2006, Catalin Ignat, URBB’s marketing vice-president said in an interview to Daily Business on January 10.

The brewing company URBB, the producer of Tuborg and Carlsberg, has invested $4 mil to set up a logistic centre with a surface of 3.5 ha and $11 mln to spread its production capacity.

Another investment has been directed to purchase a CO2 recuperation installation for environment protection, $900 thousand being spent for.

The brewery’s production capacity was of 1.4 mln hl in 2006, with an estimation of 2.3 mln hl by 2011. In 2007 the company expects 1.8 mln hl.

For the first 10 month of 2006 the company’s market share constituted 8.5 pct compared with 6.97 in the same period of 2005. The most appreciated brand is Tuborg with 50 pct of Romanian beer market.

China: Chongqing Brewery’s net profit up over 50% in 2006

Chongqing Brewery Co Ltd (SHA 600132), Scottish & Newcastle Plc's Chinese partner, said its net profit in 2006 is likely to have risen over 50 pct due to strong sales and tighter cost controls, according to a statement filed to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, XFN-ASIA reported on January 11.

Chongqing Brewery, which booked 78.83 million yuan ($10.10 million) net profit in 2005, did not give a reason for the robust forecast.

The company, in which Scottish & Newcastle PLC (S&N) holds a 19.51 pct stake, reported net profit of 78.83 mln yuan or 0.31 yuan per share in 2005.

It will release detailed figures in its annual financial report, expected to come out before the end of April. (1 usd = 7.80 yuan)

Malt News
Germany & Russia: Avangard could be the 6th world’s bigger maltster

The Avangard’s purchase of 4 Weissheimer malt houses could make Avangard the 6th biggest world maltster, according to a market report of December 12, 2006.

The purchased lines’ production capacity is of 330.000 tonnes. The transaction price was not revealed. Avangard, through its subsidiary Russky Solod, already owes 3 malt houses in Russia with a capacity of 340.000 tonnes/year as well as one in construction with a capacity of 112.000 tonnes.

Barley News
World: Barley is in a special position

Barley is in a special position, as often before, but at price levels hardly ever seen before, analysts commented on December 22. The world crop of 140 Mill. tons differs little from the harvest of 2005/06, but is 14 Mill. tons lower than in 2004/05.

Consumption is expected 9 Mill. tons higher than a year before, because of larger feed use in the EU and CIS. The IGC assumes Saudi Arabia imports of only 5,5 Mill. tons, but the trade anticipates a regular import volume of 6,5 – 7,0 Mill. tons. Therefore the stock change between the crop years could even be more dramatic.
