South America: SABMiller plc to invest US$1.8 billion in South America

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced on January 17 that it is investing approximately US$1.8 billion in its South American operations over 5 years, responding to higher than expected sales volumes and the significant profit growth potential in the region. The investment will finance upgrades to the group’s brewing capacity; point of sale improvements; the development of route to market networks; and new packaging which forms part of a brand renovation programme to enhance the appeal of the group’s beers to a broader base of consumers and across a wider range of drinking occasions.

As part of its investment in Colombia, SABMiller will replace over 700 million bottles and 25 million crates in a substantial project to drive both volume growth and category reappraisal. Strong volume growth in Colombia has already accelerated the investment of US$175 million in a new brewery in Cali, the country third largest city in the west of the country. Similarly in Peru, where SABMiller’s subsidiary Backus and Johnston has already announced it will invest US$102 million in the expansion of its facilities at Ate and Motupe, a further $12 million has been spent in the current financial ... Japan: Beer and beer-like drinks’ shipments edged down 0.7% in 2006

Japan's top five producers’ domestic shipments of beer and beer-like alcoholic drinks fell 0.7 percent in 2006 from the year before for the second straight yearly fall, Kyodo News International reported on January 17.

Shipments by Kirin Brewery Co., Asahi Breweries Ltd., Suntory Ltd., Orion Breweries Ltd. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd., a Sapporo Holdings Ltd. unit, came to 497.50 million cases, according to the Brewers Association of Japan and beer manufacturers.

One case holds 20 633-milliliter bottles, and is equivalent to 12.66 litres of beer.

Kirin Brewery attributed the mild market shrinkage to smaller consumption stemming from the rapid graying of the Japanese populace and to the defection of consumers to other alcoholic beverage categories.

The shrinkage also stemmed from the higher tax rate set for so-called "third-category beer," or beer-like sparkling drinks, whose consumption has been steadily expanding in recent years, the brewer said.

Other industry officials traced the contraction to a crackdown on drunken driving which police began implementing last fall.

Regular beer shipments dropped 2.0 percent to 276.63 million cases for the 10th consecutive year of fall.

Shipments of "happoshu" low-malt beer slumped 10.4 percent to 124.78 million cases for the fourth straight yearly drop.

Bulgaria: Every Bulgarian drank 68 liters of beer last year

The annual beer consumption in Bulgaria reached 68 liters per capita in 2006, Union of Brewers in Bulgaria head Vladimir Ivanov said according to Sofia Echo, January 18.

Compared to the quantity consumed in the UK, where one person had 100 liters of beer in 2006, the Bulgarian consumption was still not that high.

New brands of beer would appear on the Bulgarian beer market in the spring of 2007, Ivanov said. The number of licensed beer brands sold in Bulgaria would reach nine. Local brands were 27.

The brewing industry was expected to reach a seven per cent growth in 2007.

According to experts Bulgarians preferred to drink beer at home, because it was less expensive. Beer consumption in Bulgaria depended on the economic situation in the country.

The price of Bulgarian beer would rise in 2007, but insignificantly, Ivanov said. Beer price was lower only in China, he said.

Beer brewers in Bulgaria produced 5 228 million hl of beer in 2006.

Lithuania: Higher prices for beer in 2007

Beer lovers have to pay more for their favourite drink, Baltic Business News reported January 18. Compared with last summer, the price of 0.5 l bottle has grown about 13 pct. Lithuanian breweries blame rising costs of raw materials. They hope higher prices will be offset by growing salaries and will not drive the consumers away. Imported beers are expected to cost more as well. Forthcoming municipal elections and expensive beer is a bad combination, the good soldier Schweik would say. He believed the government which raises beer prices is doomed.

In March, the Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) will publish calls for large tenders to procure hardware, standard software and stationery. This will be a pilot project aimed at testing a centralised procurement procedure. “Currently, we are seeing a number of cases when contracting authorities procure supplies at a higher cost than they could get at a retail store,” said Viktoras Sirvydis, CPMA director.

Czech Republic: Krusovice brewery increased by 11% its beer output in 2006

Kralovsky pivovar Krusovice, one of the oldest breweries in the Czech Republic, increased its beer production by 11 percent year-on-year to 968,000 hectolitres at end-Dec 2006, spokesman Vlastimil Bradac told CTK January 19.

Beer output reached 872,000 hl in 2005. In 1997, a record output stood at one million hl, said Bradac.

Kralovsky pivovar Krusovice also reported a year-on-year growth in exports amounting to 36 percent.

"Nearly 509,000 hl of beer were supplied to 29 countries, mainly to Russia, Germany and Slovakia," said Bradac.

Kralovsky pivovar Krusovice was the fourth biggest beer exporter in the Czech Republic last year, with Plzensky Prazdroj ranking first.

Profit reached nearly CZK 158 million in 2005, and in 2004 the brewer netted CZK 166.2 million, the best result since 1992, when the company emerged.

Net debt decreased from more than CZK 473 million in 2004 to CZK 272.5 million in 2005.

In August 2005, Radeberger Gruppe of Germany which owns 99.83 percent of shares squeezed out minority shareholders paying CZK 1,889 per share worth a nominal CZK 750 and CZK 2,518 per share worth a nominal CZK 1,000.

Following its privatisation Kralovsky pivovar Krusovice has been a part of the multinational group Dr. Oetker since 1993.

UK & India: Cobra Beer plans to invest $20 million in India by 2009

Cobra Beer based in UK is going to invest $20 million in India in the next two years, Rediff News reported January 18. Of this, about $10 million is likely to be spent on promoting the brand and setting up a distribution network in the country.

Cobra beer is famous among the Asian ethnic community and which gels with the spicy dishes offered at various Indian restaurants in London, also hopes to get listed on the London Stock Exchange by 2009.

The company's CEO Karan Bilimoria on Wednesday said the investment would be made at the greenfield plant likely to come up in Hyderabad besides looking at acquiring breweries.

He said Cobra beer was being brewed at two locations in the country and two more locations will start brewing shortly. The company, to further expand its presence, is further looking at tying up with another brewery, which will take the count up to five.
Work on the greenfield plant, if it comes up in Hyderabad, is slated to start by June or July, this year. According to the UK-based entrepreneur, they will add 3 million cases to their present capacity of 2 million cases in the next five years.

Australia: 2005/2006 season malting barley pool estimates rises

ABB Grain Ltd has reviewed its gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 season barley and has raised its malting barley estimate by A$5/tonne for both SA and Victoria, ABB Grain communicated on January 17.

ABB’s executive manager group marketing, Gary Spiel, said that continuing strong world demand, creating a “global tightness” for premium quality malting barley, had prompted the latest increases in estimates – the sixth rise since late August.

“This increased estimate demonstrates the value of delivering into barley pools, as they capture the value of the grain over time through selection of markets,” he said.

“In the 2005 harvest, there was considerable emotion about cash prices versus pools, but the figures show that growers who supported the No.1 malting pool will receive between A$29/t and A$35/t more than the average cash price during that harvest.

“The average cash price for malting barley at Port Adelaide over the period mid-November 2005 to the end of January 2006 was A$158.28/t, with the corresponding average price over the same period at Geelong being A$164.73/t.

“Even allowing for the cost of harvest finance, the current pool return is in excess of average cash prices during that period mentioned.”
