Brewery News
Canada: Asia Pacific Breweries appoints Molson as exclusive distributor of Tiger beer in Canada

Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) has aligned itself with a heavyweight brewer to jointly intensify their involvement in Canada’s imported beer segment, according to APB’s news room, February 14. The partners announced that, with effect from 1st April 2007, Molson will be given the exclusive rights to market, sell and distribute APB’s flagship Tiger in Canada. A leading brewer, Molson is the largest beer importer there and represents some of the top-selling imported beers.

Canada, with a beer consumption of over 22 million hectolitres (1 hectolitre = 100 litres) per year, has one of the larger beer markets in the world. Despite modest growth in the overall beer market, the super premium import segment has been witnessing thriving sales of approximately 10% per annum owing to the Canadians’ escalating interest in imported beers. As evidenced in the success of Tiger in the United States and the United Kingdom, both APB and Molson clearly recognize the business potential that can be brought about by collectively investing in a quality brew like Tiger as they heighten their participation in the imported segment of the Canada beer market.

The newly-forged alliance will enable Tiger to effectively tap on the resources and capabilities of ...

Hong Kong: Kingway Brewery to start beer production at Foshan plant in 2008

Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd said its 400 mln yuan brewery in Foshan City, Guangdong province will start commercial production in early 2008, according to AFX News Limited, February 13.

The company, which first announced the project in November, said it has set up a new company named Kingway Brewery (Foshan) Co Ltd to build and operate the new plant.

The plant will have production capacity of 200,000 tons per annum.

Kingway said it has so far awarded contracts worth 137.4 mln yuan for the brewery's construction.

Australia: Foster's receives concept approval for Kent brewery site

Foster's Group Limited (Foster's) received concept plan approval for the former Kent Brewery site on the 9th February from the NSW Minister for Planning, The Hon. Frank Sartor, according to Foster's Group media centre, February 12.

Encompassing nearly 5.8 hectares of land, the Sydney CBD site represents a unique development opportunity for the city and the local community. The approved concept plan aims to transform the site into a mixed residential, office, retail, entertaining and dining precinct, while preserving the site heritage and introducing parks and open space.

Foster's Australia, Asia & Pacific Finance Director, Angus McKay said: "This is a great result for Foster's and for the people of Sydney who will benefit from the creation of a new residential and commercial precinct within the local community.

Foster's announced its intention to seek greater planning certainty for the site in early 2005, following the cancellation of a previous $203 million conditional offer to purchase the site.

The heritage site, the former home of the Tooth and Co. and Carlton & United Breweries, was built on Blackwattle Swamp Creek in 1835. The brewery ceased operation in early 2005.

"With concept approval received, we will now seek an appropriate purchaser with the ability and vision ...

USA: Molson Coors Brewing reports a 10% share growth in Q4 2006

Molson Coors Brewing Co. reports earnings for the fiscal fourth quarter, The Associated Press reported February 13. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.

Molson Coors Brewing Co., like competitors Anheuser-Busch Cos. and SABMiller PLC, has been facing cost increases for commodities such as aluminium and barley throughout the year.

Molson Coors, which makes beers including Coors Light, Blue Moon Belgian White Ale and Keystone, is hoping to see some benefits from cost-cutting initiatives, including $6 million to $7 million of savings from the closing of a Memphis, Tenn., brewery.

The company started the quarter with an analyst downgrade in October on the company's declining volumes in Canada. Bear Stearns analyst Carlos Laboy warned that volume declines could continue past the end of 2006 into 2007.

The company got a bit of a boost in November when the Securities and Exchange Commission recommended closing an investigation into the merger that formed the company.

Molson Coors Brewing was formed in 2005 by the merger of Canada-based Molson Inc. and Golden, Colo.-based Adolph Coors Co. The merger prompted an investigation after several lawsuits alleged the company and some of its officers and directors misled shareholders by not disclosing first-quarter ...

Colombia: Anheuser-Busch partners with Heineken to distribute and market Budweiser in Colombia

Anheuser-Busch and Heineken International de Colombia S.A. have signed an agreement for Heineken to import, distribute and market Budweiser in Colombia, according to Anheuser-Busch’s news room, February 9.

Heineken’s distribution channels will ensure consumers are able to find Budweiser nationwide at restaurants, bars, dance clubs, liquor stores, leading grocery chains and independent retailers. Heineken International de Colombia S.A. also will be responsible for Budweiser’s local marketing activities.
Since launching in January 2006 through an exclusive import arrangement with Exito, the largest grocery chain in the country, Budweiser has become one of the most popular beers in Colombian supermarkets.

“Budweiser has exceeded expectations in Colombia since last year’s launch and there is a growing demand for the brand’s clean, crisp and refreshing taste,” said Esteban Amoia, regional marketing manager, South America, Anheuser-Busch International, Inc. “As the leader in Colombia’s growing premium international segment, Heineken has extensive experience and a solid distribution network, which will provide Budweiser with a strong presence in restaurants and bars, as well as in the many family owned retail outlets.”

Budweiser is an American lager brewed by Anheuser-Busch since 1876 using a blend of domestic and imported hops, and a combination of barley malts and rice. ...

Malt News
EU: The latest developments in the restructuring phase of the European malt industry

The latest developments in the restructuring phase of the European malt industry were the take-over of the West German Weissheimer plants by Avangard, Moscow, and the purchase of Sachsen-Malz, Heidenau, and Baltic Malt, Gdansk, by Malteurop, Reims. All these factories had produced malt (not 100 % of their capacities) under their former managements so that the amount of malt offered to the market will hardly increase.

EU: A Czech estimate puts the import deficit at 300.000 tons for the present crop year

In the past few months shipments of malting barley from France, Denmark and the UK to Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic had been very substantial, and even Slovakia and Hungary had received a good number of trains of French spring and winter barley, market analysts commented on February 2nd.

A Czech estimate puts the import deficit at 300.000 tons for the present crop year. Maltsters all over the EU will end the campaign with no barley stocks extremely early in the new crop year and will need at least a 13 months supply for the new campaign, i.e. 850.000 tons additional malting barley of crop 2007. It is still unclear, how much old and new crop barley Russia will buy, estimates are upto 200.000 tons.

China's domestic barley stocks seem exhausted by now, and what are Chinese maltsters and brewers going to do without new offers coming from Canada and Australia? It is safe to assume that there will be a good Chinese demand for French winter barley for shipment between August and October. Business is already reported, certainly for container shipment, while a rumour of a sold Panamax bulk cargo cannot be confirmed yet.

EU: The EU exported 2.35 million tonnes up to Feb. 2, 2007

The EU exported 2.35 million tonnes to-date (intervention sales and booked licences), and has surpassed last year's figure in recent months, because it has taken over a major export program from the defaulting Ukraine. Carryover intervention stocks of barley were 2.35 million tonnes in July of last year and have been reduced to 500.000 tons by now.

Market prices of feed barley, basis July, delivered Rouen, are EUR 143,-/144,- versus the intervention price of EUR 101,31, market analysts posted on February 2nd.
