Brewery News
Czech Republic: Breweries raise output to record 19.8 mil hl in 2006

Czech breweries increased output by 3.8 percent to a record 19.79 million hectolitres of beer last year, the Czech Beer and Malt Association said, according to Czech News Agency, March 15.

Beer sale on the domestic market was boosted by favourable weather, especially the hot summer. Beer production for the Czech market amounted to 16.25 million hectolitres, a growth of 1.8 percent against 2005.

Per capita consumption reached 158 litres last year, with foreigners accounting for some 12.5 percent of domestic consumption or about 20 litres.

Beer exports rose by 14 percent on the year to roughly 3.54 million hectolitres. Czech beer is sold especially in Germany (41 percent of exports), Slovakia, England and the USA. Czech beer exports head for more than 50 countries.

The largest Czech beer makers are again Plzensky Prazdroj, Pivovary Staropramen and Budejovicky Budvar. The seven major breweries that account for 84 percent of domestic output also include Kralovsky pivovar Krusovice, PMS Prerov, DRINKS UNION and Starobrno.

The Czech Republic has 48 industrial breweries, their number has not changed for many years, while the number of mini-breweries has been rising. There are nearly 60 mini-breweries in the country.

The most dynamic increase in production was recorded for non-alcoholic beer whose ...

South Africa: SABMiller shares dropped 4.4 percent after Heineken had ended Amstel South Africa contract

Shares in brewer SABMiller PLC dropped more than 4 percent Tuesday after rival Heineken NV ended the company's contract to make Amstel lager in South Africa, Associated Press reported March 13.

Heineken said late Monday it had terminated the licensing agreement that allows SABMiller to brew, market and distribute Amstel lager in South Africa and that it plans to build its own brewery there – meaning that London-listed SABMiller is facing increased competition in a market it currently dominates.

SABMiller said it will lose $80 million (60 million euros) in earnings before interest, taxes and amortization in the next fiscal year because of the loss of sales of Amstel, which currently represent 9 percent of its beer volumes in South Africa.

The company, which has a 97.5 percent share of the South African market, said it is already pursuing a number of initiatives to mitigate the impact of the license termination, including broadening its premium offering.

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Trevor Stirling said the loss of the deal, a bone of contention between the two companies for some time, was clearly a blow for SABMiller, but added that it “causes headaches for both of them.”

Stirling estimates that SABMiller's other ...

Croatia: Karlovacka Brewery operations banned because of CO2 leaking into fermentation

Ministry of Environmental Protection inspection banned operation of Karlovacka brewery until it enables CO2 recovery appliance, Javno News reported March 12.

Temporary ban will be in effect until the irregularities are removed, i.e. until Karlovacka brewery does not enable its carbon dioxide recovery appliance.

Due to wrongly placed pipes, carbon dioxide leaked into the fermentation drive of Karlovacka brewery, but it is not familiar for how long.

Because of carbon dioxide poisoning of Zdravko Martinovic vented into the stream behind the brewery, the brewery`s technical director Gabor Ligeti was brought in last week to the County court inquest centre, along with Karlovacka brewery chief engineer Slaven Siladic, fermentation production manager Marinko Kovacevic and security at work and environmental protection manager Zrinka Odrcic, judge Alenka Laptalo and County court in Karlovac spokesperson notified.

But, they were released afterwards, and the State attorney’s office demanded their custody.

Documentation was omitted from the Karlovacka brewery, and an inquest was conducted, during which all evidence were ensured as well as facts determined linked with carbon dioxide leak.

Romania: Beck’s beer sales increased by 35% in 2006

Interbrew Romania, the local branch of InBev, the worldwide leader on the beer market, witnessed a 35% increase in the value of sales for Beck's beer, a rate twice as big as the one witnessed in Bulgaria, according to information supplied by the Belgian group, Ziarul Financiar published March 15.

"The factors that contributed to Beck's increase in 2006 were an image campaign, which managed to outline a clear territory for the brand in the consumer's mind, as well as direct promotion in hotels and restaurants," stated Liviu Irimia, marketing manager of Interbrew. Beck's is a brand present in over 120 countries, with global sales of over 7.2 million hectolitres in 2006, up 14% against 2005, according to information available on the InBev website.

The brand was launched on the local market in 2003, with Romania being the first country in Europe to have been authorised to produce Beck's beer domestically through Interbrew Romania, the local branch of InBev. It was granted the same authorisation for the Lowenbrau brand, which was launched last year in the sector of PET-bottled beer.

Denmark: Carlsberg may close several European breweries

Carlsberg could close several of its breweries in Western Europe during 2007, chief executive Nils Smedegaard Andersen said, according to news agency Direkt, AFX News Limited reported March 7.

“Nordic countries and other smaller countries should typically have one brewery each,” Direkt quoted him as saying, adding that bigger countries should have two.

However, Smedegaard Andersen does not presently see any significant overcapacity at Carlsberg's breweries, Direkt said.

Smedegaard Andersen said there 'is no point closing breweries with a critical mass unless real estate is involved.'

This may indicate that Carlsberg's breweries in Leeds and Hamburg may be closed, since they are located in attractive areas in the centre of the cities, Direkt speculated.

Russia: The successful merger of Baltika, Vena, Yarpivo and Pikra companies made it possible to achieve high financial results in 2006

Basic results of 2006 in figures:

Sales volume of all production
- 37.2 million hectolitres
Net sales - 1,739.5 million EURO
Gross profit - 931.8 million EURO
EBITDA - 555.9 million EURO
EBIT - 427.1 million EURO

COMPLETION OF THE MERGER
The achievement of high financial results became possible due to the successfully implemented process of merging the Russian breweries Baltika, Vena, Yarpivo and Pikra. This was a unique project for Russia from the standpoint of its specifics, complexity and deadlines, which characterised by a transparent information policy and was executed in the best traditions of international corporate law - in strict conformity with Russian legislation and with full respect for the interests of shareholders in all four companies.

Thanks to a competent and precise implementation of the merger process, total synergy benefit of 2006 results amounted around 80 MUSD, of which 20 MUSD was reached already in 2005. An effective system of cross-brewing was created at the 10 breweries of consolidated Baltika, with a combined capacity of 40 million hectoliters per year, located in all regions of Russia.

In December 2006 the decision was taken to build a ...

Malt News
EU: Supply and demand of malt are not in balance and malt prices are rising as a result

After bad losses in the past years maltsters cannot afford any more to speculate on barley prices, but they cover their sales immediately, market analysts commented.

Malting margins are min. EUR 100,- per ton of malt, the trend goes to higher levels. It is due to the higher cost of energy, transport and other factors, but also due to the absolute necessity to show profits to shareholders and bankers after the bad years.

Supply and demand of malt in the EU are not in balance, since the accession of Romania and Bulgaria there is a deficit of a few hundred thousand tons. Malt exports, which will drop by 350,000 tonnes in 2006/07, will rise again, as the world balance shows a deficit as well. Resulting malt prices are EUR 350,-/370,- per ton ex works.

World: There will be additional demand for barley and for malt of crop 2007 to rebuild stocks

Just like maltsters are short-covered in barley, also many brewers purchased less malt and reduced their inventory in the expensive crop year of 2006/07, market analysts have recently commented.

It means there will be additional demand for barley and for malt of crop 2007. Recent purchases and purchase intentions of Asian, Latin American and African brewers point to rather large quantities needed to rebuild stocks.

Barley News
EU: Most international grain houses had shifted their barley export program to EU ports

In feed barley markets the Ukraine abandoned their quota system and freed exports from restrictions, which had disrupted Black Sea barley exports since October. In the meantime most international grain houses had shifted their barley export program to EU ports. Last week’s EU barley export licence fixations of 83,000 tons show that sales, purchases and logistics commitments keep EU shipments going, although there is a price difference of EUR 20,- per ton between the two origins.

Unsold stocks, especially those in port silos, reduced market values FOB Ukrainian ports, to US 175,- to 180,- per ton. On the other side, total EU exports of the grain year of 2.869 million tonnes have surpassed last year’s exports till the end of February by 330,000 tonnes.

Australia: ABB Grain’s 2005/2006 season barley pool estimates maintained

ABB Grain has reviewed its gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 season barley and has maintained its estimates for both malt and feed barley, according to ABB’s press room, March 15.

ABB’s executive manager group marketing, Gary Spiel, said demand for feed barley had been strong, though many buyers had not covered their forward requirements and the spectre of northern hemisphere crops was rapidly approaching.

He said it was pleasing to note that ABB was now executing the final 2005/2006 pool tonnages.

“There is continued unfilled world demand for malt barley and Australia is well placed to take advantage of this profile,” Mr Spiel said.

“ABB is looking to continue to secure high priced opportunities for malt barley on rising market activity once buyers return to the market following Chinese New Year celebrations.”

Gross estimates for 2005/2006 season barley are:

South Australian pools 2005/2006 season:

No. 1 malting (closed Jan 24, 2006) - AU$225/tonne

No.1 feed (closed Jan 24, 2006) - AU$165/tonne

No.2 malting (opened Jan 24, 2006) - AU$207/tonne

No.2 feed (opened Jan 24, 2006) - AU$152/tonne

Victorian pools 2005/2006 season:

No.1 malting (closed Oct 31, 2005) - AU$230/tonne

No.2 malting (closed Jan 24, 2006) - AU$225/tonne

Ireland: Tillage farmers protest at Greencore demanding doubling barley premiums

About 150 farmers, who staged a protest outside Minch Malt — part of the Greencore Group, in Athy, Co Kildare — said the company had offered a derisory premium of €15 per tonne for a quality product while at the same time consumers were being asked to pay more for their pint, Irish Examiner reported March 14.

Grain growers warned they will not guarantee a supply of malting barley for use in the brewing of drinks including Guinness unless they get a fair price for the crop.

However, Minch Malt said it had offered growers the option of a guaranteed fixed price of €140 per tonne at 20% moisture.

“This guaranteed price will suit growers who prefer certainty and wish to minimise price risk and is an alternative to the €15 premium on average feeding barley price at 2007 harvest,” said Pat Murphy, Minch Malt purchasing director.

“Minch Malt is also giving growers the option to mix the fixed and variable options as it suits the grower.”

But IFA Grain Committee chairman Colum McDonnell said market conditions justify a doubling of the malting premium paid to growers. He said publicans, Government, brewers and maltsters account for 99.8% of the price of ...
