Brewery News
Canada: Molson and Heineken renew distribution agreement

Molson and Heineken are pleased to announce a renewal of their Agreement to market, sell and distribute the Heineken brand in Canada, CCNMatthews reported May 1.

The multi-year Agreement further strengthens the existing Molson and Heineken relationship in Canada which has developed over the past two decades. Both Molson and Heineken are committed to building the Heineken brand in Canada through increased investment in the brand and continued innovations.

"As a world-class beer - and the most popular European import sold in Canada - Heineken represents an important part of Molson's brand portfolio," says Mark Hunter, Chief Commercial Officer at Molson. "Molson is proud to leverage its extensive marketing and brand-building expertise in the Canadian market in support of Heineken's top-quality products and we are very proud and pleased to be extending our partnership with Heineken, and look forward to doing business under this new agreement."

In Canada, Heineken brand volumes enjoyed double-digit growth, reaching 400,000 hectolitres in 2006. The imported beer segment makes up 10.3% of the overall beer market in Canada and has experienced thriving sales of approximately 10% per annum, owing to Canada's escalating interest in imported beers.

Fomento Económico Mexicano ("FEMSA") announced its operational and financial results for the first quarter of 2007, in its press release, April 30.

First Quarter 2007 Highlights:

Consolidated total revenues increased 8.7%. All operating units contributed to this top-line growth.
Coca-Cola FEMSA total sales volume increased 7.0% and income from operations increased 10.8%. Strongest growth came from all international operations, which combined grew at a double-digit pace.

FEMSA Cerveza total revenues increased 3.6%; Mexico sales volume increased 2.6%, Brazil sales volume increased 14.4%, and export sales volume increased 5.8%.
A combination of external and internal factors, mainly in Brazil and Mexico resulted in a 57.6% decrease in income from operations.

FEMSA Cerveza and Heineken USA have reached a new agreement to extend their successful relationship for the long-term. The two most complementary import portfolios in the U.S. beer industry will continue to be marketed together for the next 10 years.

Denmark & UK: Carlsberg plans to take over Scottish & Newcastle

Carlsberg has set in motion plans to take over Scottish & Newcastle, the brewer of Kronenberg and Foster's, Daily Mail reported April 30.

The Danish brewer, which is seeking bid advisers, said last Friday it would double its share capital. It is already in a joint venture with S&N in Russia's number one beer maker Baltika, which accounts for more than 40 per cent of Carlsberg's profits.

S&N has a stock market value of 5.9 billion and any takeover bid would be paid for in Carlsberg shares. Recent bid speculation suggested that South African drinks giant SABMiller and Diageo would mount a joint bid for S&N.

It is understood that Carlsberg felt it had to act to protect the Russian joint venture from falling into alternative hands.

The company said, however, that it had "no immediate bid plans."

"A bid was initially a defensive move," said a source close to the Danes. "But there is only one reason to create these new shares and that is to use them to buy S&N."

The Carlsberg Foundation, which has had a stranglehold on the company since the founder disinherited his son and left the brewery to Copenhagen university professors 200 years ago, ...

New Zeeland: Breweries plan beer price rise

New Zealand's two largest breweries are planning price rises from July 1, New Zeeland Herald reported May 2.

Lion Nathan and DB Breweries are citing higher production costs for an increase in the price of beer, but neither of the brewing giants is ready to say by how much.

Lion Nathan was first to announce its price rise.

Managing director Peter Kean said: "Over the past 12 months we've sustained increased costs right across our manufacturing and distribution activities, including higher aluminium, glass, sugar and fuel prices.

"We cannot continue to absorb higher production costs any longer."

The recent increase in road-user charges was the latest cost.

DB Breweries' managing director Brian Blake said his company would also increase prices when the annual CPI-related excise tax was increased on July 1.

"That's traditionally when the breweries look at their increases in costs," Mr Blake said.

DB had yet to determine the level of its price increase.

"We haven't done the detailed calculations at this stage. But there have been significant raw material increases over the past 12 months and they need to be recovered."

Lion's corporate affairs director, Liz Read, said the company would inform the retail trade of new prices in about two weeks.

The excise duty on alcohol is ...

Romania: Tuborg announced 15 mil Euros for marketing in 2007

United Romanian Breweries Bereprod (URBB), producing Tuborg and Carlsberg brands under licence, has earmarked a net sum of 15 million euros this year for marketing activities, says Shachar Shaine, the company's chairman, according to Ziarul Financiar, April 24.

URBB's marketing budget is 40% bigger this year against 2006, according to company information. "Of the 15 million euros we're earmarking for the marketing budget, 5 million euros will be used for the promotion of brands in the media," said Shaine.

During the 2004-2005 period, URBB invested around 50 million euros (rate-card) in TV and radio promotion, according to the data provided by AlfaCont tracking firm.

According to URBB chairman, investments in marketing will be directed to event organisation, product promotion in outlets and to media promotion.

Of the 5 million euros destined to media promotion, the company will use one million euros for the Holsten brand alone, with the same sum to be used for the promotion of Skol brand.

URBB is present on the beer market only on the premium and super-premium segment, with Skol, Tuborg, Carlsberg, Holsten, Guinness and Kilkenny brands, with the last two being imported brands. The company is also the domestic distributor of Orangina and Granini soft drinks ...

Japan: New brand boosts Kirin 1st quarter profits

Kirin Brewery Co., Japan's biggest seller of beverages, said profit grew for the first quarter in a year, aided by the introduction of its first major new brand of beer in 17 years, Bloomberg reported May 1.

Net income rose 2.3 percent to 6.5 billion yen ($54 million), or 6.82 yen a share, in the three months ended March 31 from 6.4 billion yen, or 6.66 yen, a year earlier, the company said today. Lifted by the introduction of Kirin The Gold beer on March 20, sales gained 8 percent to 378 billion yen.

The debut of Kirin The Gold, which coincides with Kirin's 100th anniversary, is part of the Tokyo-based company's push to attract younger beer drinkers in their 20s and 30s. Sales of the new beer exceeded forecasts, putting Kirin on target to sell 8 million cases in the first year, the company said. Overall, beer sales rose 5.6 in the first quarter compared with a year earlier.

For the full year, Kirin reiterated that it expects net income to rise 2.8 percent to 55 billion yen on a 13 percent gain in sales to 1.88 trillion yen.

To boost sales, the company is building a factory in ...

Malt News
EU: If malt were produced at full capacity, the export surplus would be of about 2 million tonnes

The EU-27 has at present a malting capacity of 8.72 million tonnes, according to the latest forecasts. If malt were produced at full capacity, the export surplus would be 2.02 million tonnes. In 2005/06 EU exports were 2.18 million tonnes, in 2006/07 they will drop to 1.8 million tonnes.

Malt capacity usage at 100 % has hardly ever been achieved. Germany, e.g., has a barley malt capacity of 1.88 million tonnes, but will probably produce less than 1.7 million tonnes in 2006/07.

Barley News
Canada: 2007-08 exports of malting and feed barley are forecast to increase by 7%

Barley production 2007-2008 is forecast by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to increase by 20% due to higher area and yields. Supply is expected to increase only slightly, as lower carry-in stocks offset much of the higher production.

Exports of malting and feed barley are forecast to increase by 7% to a normal level. Carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 6%. The average off-Board feed barley price (No. 1 CW I/S Lethbridge) is forecast to decrease by CA$5/t from 2006-07 to CA$160/t.

Statistics Canada's (STC) survey of seeding intentions for 2007 indicated that the total area seeded to grains and oilseeds (G&O) is estimated to increase by 2% from 2006. Summerfallow area is estimated to fall to a modern day record low. Areas seeded to canola, durum, barley, corn and oats are estimated to increase, but areas seeded to wheat ex-durum, rye, mixed grains, flaxseed and soybeans are expected to decrease. The actual seeded areas may differ from the intentions due to changes in the market outlook and expected prices, producer reaction to the STC report and soil moisture conditions at seeding time.

Canada: Beer companies urge farmers to grow malt quality barley

Canada's beer companies put out a news release this week saying they want Prairie farmers to grow malting barley, The StarPhoenix published May 2.

Considering that in an average year more than two million tonnes of malting barley are selected from barley grown by Prairie farmers – and those farmers are expected to increase seeded barley acreage in 2007 – encouragement from the beer industry may seem a bit unnecessary.

Howard Collins, president and CEO of the Brewers Association of Canada said the association is committed to keeping "malting barley a viable alternative to other crops and ensuring that Canadian malt barley is globally competitive."

Canada's 14 breweries buy up about 350,000 tonnes of the malting barley selected, with the rest sold to global markets, the release notes. It concluded by saying Canada's brewers are "committed to forging stronger relations with growers and building value chains."

University of Saskatchewan agricultural economist Richard Gray says the system may some day evolve where beer companies pay a premium to farmers, but he says currently there is no mechanism for that.

Even if the brewers have to pay extra some day to encourage production, Gray says barley prices don't make a huge difference in the end price of ...
