Brewery News
Hong Kong: Legislators threaten revolt over beer prices

Hong Kong lawmakers threatened Friday to stage a revolt to stop a reduction in the duty on beer after hearing that not all of the price cut was not being passed on to drinkers, Jurnalo published May 25.

Beer duty in the city of 6.9 million was cut from 40 to 20 per cent in Financial Secretary Henry Tang's March budget, which became immediately effective but must be approved by legislators.

However, at a meeting Friday, the Hong Kong Beer Coalition, which represents suppliers, admitted prices in bars and shops had been cut by only around half the maximum possible amount.

Legislator Tommy Cheung urged the government to persuade beer companies to cut prices further and said a number of lawmakers would otherwise reverse the duty reduction by voting down the budget.

Hong Kong is already one of the world's most expensive places for drinkers with bar prices for a small bottle of beer ranging from 2.5 to 5.75 US dollars.

Russia: State Duma banned beer drinking in public

The State Duma backed a ban on drinking beer in public, the latest in series of legislative measures aimed at regulating health and public behavior, The Associated Press reported May 24.

The bill passed by a vote of 377-0 in a first reading. The measure would prohibit beer drinking in streets, parks and public squares for both adults and minors. Only licensed restaurants and cafes would be allowed to serve beer and alcohol in open-air settings.

The bill, which must still go through two more readings, would impose fines of up to 300 rubles ($12) on violators. Drinking vodka and other hard alcohol beverages in public is already banned, though the restriction is rarely enforced.

USA: Premium light imported beer accounts for an estimated 14.2% of light imported dollar sales in 2006

From its initial launch as a sub-segment in 2005, premium light imported beer accounts for an estimated 14.2% of light imported dollar sales In 2006 (in FDM) in the United States, according to Research and Markets, May 24.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of imported beer in the United States 2006 to their offering.
This report is the second of two volumes. This volume focuses on imported beer for sale in the US. Volume sales figures are based on analysis of volume sales data from Adams Beverage Group. Dollar sales figures are created by triangulating dollar sales data from IRI for beer sold through FDM with volume sales for all distribution channels from Adams Beverage Group. Consumer attitudes and behavior and perceptions about beer are gathered in exclusive consumer research conducted for this report. Key themes in this report include:

According to an analysis of the Simmons NCS, the percentage of adult respondents who say they drink imported beer remained at about 26% of all adult respondents between 2001 and 2005. Sales growth, therefore, is due primarily to an increase in consumption among those who do drink imported beer. Imported beer sales increased on a dollar and volume basis between 2001 ...

Mexico: Modelo to distribute Carlsberg beer

Mexican brewer Modelo, maker of the Corona brand, said on Wednesday it reached a deal to import and distribute Carlsberg, Reuters reported May 23.

Modelo said the exclusive five-year agreement with Danish Carlsberg, the world's sixth-biggest beer brewer, would begin in the second half of 2007.

"It is an excellent opportunity to broaden our portfolio of imported brands with a really classy European beer and at the same time to strengthen our leadership in this segment," said Modelo's Chairman Carlos Fernandez.

Imported beer volumes have grown rapidly in recent years in Mexico, where two companies, Modelo and rival Femsa, dominate domestic brewing.

Modelo is half owned by U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc.

Brazil: Government plans to restrict beer advertising

Brazil, where drinking cold beer and sugar cane liquor is almost a national pastime, will get tough on alcohol abuse under a policy promoted by its outspoken new health minister, Reuters reported May 23.

"Every day people are dying, people are suffering violence, people are being hospitalized because of alcohol consumption," Health Minister Jose Temporao said at a signing ceremony for the new policy on Wednesday.

Temporao blamed excess drinking for a list of social ills from wife-beating to traffic accidents. The national health system spends more than 40 million reais ($20 million) annually on drug and alcohol treatment, he said.

The government plans to restrict beer advertising and to tighten up checks on drunk driving. It will also propose laws to Congress to stop gas stations selling alcoholic beverages.

Brazil is the world's fourth biggest beer-market after the United States, China and Germany.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva himself has been known to enjoy beer and cachaca, a fiery liquor made from sugar cane which poor Brazilians can buy for as little as $1 per bottle.

A Health Ministry survey found that a quarter to a third of Brazilian men drink too much. The heaviest drinkers were in the northeastern city of Salvador. In ...

USA: Boston Beer Co. to decide whether to build a brewery in Freetown

Officials from Boston Beer Co., the makers of Sam Adams beer, hope to decide before summer on whether to open a brewery in Freetown, South Coast Today published May 24.

Company officials, including president and CEO Martin Roper, met with selectmen this week explaining that they were seeking grants to pay for water and sewer lines upgrades on the property where a plant would be located.

Mr. Roper was optimistic and presented a posterboard-size picture of the 250,000-square-foot "Freetown Brewery."

Mr. Roper estimated the brewery project would cost between $170 million and $210 million, an increase from the $75 million to $90 million originally proposed. The number of anticipated full-time jobs to be generated stands at 50 to 75.

During a telephone interview, Boston Beer spokeswoman Michelle Sullivan indicated that "a decision hasn't been made yet" regarding whether the brewery will be built on the Campanelli site.

She referred to the fact that Freetown has no sewer system at this time and buys water from Fall River. "It is a huge financial undertaking that requires a long evaluation process. We plan to make a decision by this summer," Ms. Sullivan said.

Asked whether Boston Beer Company was still considering other cities or towns, such as New ...

Australia: Pool estimates unchanged but barley interest resumes

Cautious interest in South Australian barley prices has again been shown overseas, as ABB Grain reviewed its gross estimates for its 2006/2007 and 2005/2006 pools and has left them unchanged, ABB announced in a press release, May 24.

ABB’s executive manager, group marketing, Gary Spiel said the No.3 gross pool indicators for 2006/2007 pools remain at AU$258/tonne for malting 1 barley and feed 1 barley remains at AU$171/tonne.

“In malting barley, we are beginning to see some buying enquiries, however maltsters are still nervous about the high price of malt,” Mr Spiel said.

“Buyers are still examining different ways of getting through to the (northern hemisphere) new crop however new crop supply and demand still looks tight.

“As for feed barley, there has been limited demand but we’re still seeing some price enquiries; set against that will still be a tight period between now and the new northern crop coming in.”

Mr Spiel said that foreign exchange was still high, although the Aussie dollar had eased back a bit last week.

“On ocean freight rates, there hasn’t been much change” he said. “But there have been some signs that Panamax tonnage in the Pacific is building up, which could create some downward movement.

“Similarly, the Indian monsoon ...

EU: Pigs constitute the main competition to maltsters for barley deliveries in Denmark

Opinions differ about the extent of damage already done. Trying a consensus of opinions, it is believed that lower yields and the risk of high proteins exist in large areas of the EU, and in some parts, where barley seeds did not emerge yet, in the Czech Republic, in Slovakia, even in eastern France, total losses could occur.

One must look also at the other grains: winter wheat and barley have suffered from the dry conditions even more than spring grains, the overall grain supply of the EU could turn out precariously low.

One funny looking, but serious news comes from Denmark, where the spring barley acreage is much lower than a year ago: the pig population is up from 12,7 to 13,8 Million in one year’s time. Pigs constitute the main competition to maltsters for barley deliveries.

Australia: Victorian barley is a benefit for growers in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland

Fitzroy* - a new Victorian-bred, high-yielding variety of malting barley - is set carve a place in northern grains region cropping programs, according to Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) barley industry development officer, Kym McIntyre, Seed Quest reported May 14.

"Extensive testing has shown Fitzroy* has significant yield and disease resistance advantages over the current popular malting varieties Gairdner* and Grimmett for both northern New South Wales and southern Queensland," Ms McIntyre said.

"It is best suited to the domestic brewing markets and that's why the Lion Nathan Brewing Group, along with Joe White Maltings have been running commercial malting and brewing trials for the past two years."

[Photo (left): Peter Healy, Lion Nathan technical manager, Kym McIntyre Queensland DPI&F barley industry development officer and Angus Woods, Woods Grain, Goondiwindi toast the release of Fitzroy barley.]

Fitzroy* was bred by the Department of Primary Industries Victoria (DPIV) and evaluated in the north eastern Australia cropping zones by the QDPI&F and New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) through the Northern Region Barley Improvement Program.

"The excellent collaboration of the various organisations involved in the evaluation was a major influence the naming of this variety," Ms McIntyre said.

Fitzroy* was ...

Czech Republic: Czech hop acreage stable in 2007

The total acreage of hops in the Czech Republic is 5408 ha for the year 2007, which is only a very slight change from the last year acreage of 5414 ha, according to the report of Central Institute for Supervising and Testing in Agriculture, department for hops, May 2007.
The major variety is still SAAZ fine aroma hops with 89,5 % of the total acreage. Compare to the previous year there was an increase of the variety Premiant and a decrease of Saaz variety, mainly in the Saaz hop growing region. The positive news is that compare to previous years there was more new plantings of the Saaz variety and we foresee that this trend will continue.
Development of the Czech hop acreage in the future

The national programme supporting the purchase of new virus free-plants is now running for the second year. Last year nearly 200 ha were planted thanks to this program and we expect that this year the number will be closer to 300 ha, most of which (about ¾) being the Saaz variety. This program will continue also further and we assume that the area of newly planted hops may exceed 300 ha in the next years. The costs ...
