Brewery News
Czech Republic: European beer consumers criticise Budvar sale plan

The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) criticised the Czech government's plan to sell its stake in brewery Budejovicky Budvar, CTK reported May 27. EBCU Vice-President Laurent Mousson told reporters the privatisation may harm the quality of Budvar beer.

The EBCU is afraid the Czech brewery would get to the hands of US group Anheuser Busch, Budvar's rival in several trademark lawsuits worldwide. Mousson added the Czech state had no reason to get rid of the prosperous brewery.

Budejovicky Budvar is the third largest Czech brewery and a foremost beer exporter, as well as the last state-owned brewery in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Agriculture Ministry has recently started to look for an adviser who would help transform the brewery into a joint-stock company, a move that is generally perceived as the first step towards privatisation.

The EBCU has more than 110,000 members in 13 countries. The Czech association of beer lovers, Sdruzeni pratel piva, with more than 1,000 members became an EBCU member today.

Japan: Suntory aims to double overseas sales by 2010

Suntory Ltd. seeks to expand foreign sales by 120 percent to 400 billion yen (US$3.3 billion) by 2010 by acquiring local firms and applying other strategies, The Associated Press reported May 28.

"We'll prioritize investments in China and Southeast Asia," said President Nobutada Saji, according to the Saturday report in The Nikkei.

Suntory, a leading maker of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, rang up sales of 178.6 billion yen (US$1.48 billion) in the year through December.

Under its latest business plan, the company aims to roughly double overseas sales of soft drinks from 125.6 billion yen (US$1.03 billion) to 250 billion yen (US$2.05 billion) by 2010, and nearly triple those of alcoholic beverages from 53 billion yen (US$435 million) to 150 billion yen (US$1.23 billion) by the same date.

As for beer sales, Suntory intends to concentrate on the Chinese market in the near term, the report said. The company boasts a 60 percent share of Shanghai's beer market, as well as a roughly 15-30 percent penetration in adjacent areas.

The company also aims to strengthen its soft drink operations in Southeast Asia and sell canned coffee in Singapore and Malaysia during the summer.

Armed with a 200 billion yen war chest, Suntory is also setting ...

Germany: Biofuel boom raises beer prices

Biofuel boom raises beer prices in Germany, The Associated Press reported May 28. Like most Germans, brewer Helmut Erdmann is all for the fight against global warming. Unless, that is, it drives up the price of his beer.

And that is exactly what is happening to Erdmann and other German brewers as farmers abandon barley — the raw material for the national beverage — to plant other, subsidized crops for sale as environmentally-friendly biofuels.

"Beer prices are a very emotional issue in Germany — people expect it to be as inexpensive as other basic staples like eggs, bread and milk," said Erdmann, director of the family-owned Ayinger brewery in Aying, an idyllic village nestled between Bavaria's rolling hills and dark forests with the towering Alps on the far horizon.

"With the current spike in barley prices, we won't be able to avoid a price increase of our beer any longer," Erdmann said, stopping to sample his freshly brewed, golden product right from the steel fermentation kettle.

In the last two years, the price of barley has doubled to 200 euros ($271) from 102 euros per ton as farmers plant more crops such as rapeseed and corn that can be turned into ethanol or bio-diesel, ...

Thailand: Thai Beverage restructures its beer production to boost efficiency

Thai Beverage is restructuring its beer production to sharpen focus and boost efficiency, The Nation published May 28.

Cosmos Brewery (Thailand), Beer Thip Brewery (1991) and Beer Thai (1991) facilities have been set up at Wang Noi in Ayutthaya, Bang Ban in Ayutthaya and Kamphaeng Phet, respectively, with separate management and identity.

The move lets the breweries run more effectively and serve different purposes. They employ more than 1,500 people overall.

Cosmos's Wang Noi brewery - with an annual capacity of almost 120 million litres - produces Chang beer only for export.

Chang Export has been reformulated by reducing its alcohol level to 5 per cent, from Chang Classic's 6.4 per cent.

"Cosmos now makes more than 100 million litres of Chang each year and ships to 23 countries, including Europe and the US," Pisanu Vichiensanth, director and senior vice presi-dent of Thai Beverage, said last week.

"We're preparing to start exporting Archa beer to cater to the rising demand for a lighter beer in overseas markets.

"The company has already received orders for Archa from countries in Asia," he said, adding that almost 30 per cent of the Wang Noi brewery would be converted to Archa beer.

With 5.4-per-cent alcohol, Archa has been ...

Russia: BBH is going to invest 100 mil Euros in 2007

BBH’s 2007 total investment is estimated at 100 mil Euros, Anton Shetkin, group’s vice-president said, according to Russian Beer Union, May 28. The core investment will be directed for the increase and modernisation of the production capacity, for the purchase of new sale equipment and for marketing.

Shetkin also said that BBH’s market share in Ukraine started to grow. “We are already growing. For the first time in three years we increase our market share with 0.4 %”.

“Our three years goal is to fight for 2nd TOP position. Now we are on 3rd. Our market share constitutes 17-19%”.

BBH’s market share on premium segment is 50%, according to Shetkin.

USA: Organic beer should require organic hops

The USDA was poised to amend its rules in order to require the use of certified organic hops in beers labeled USDA Certified Organic, Beer Activist reported May 28. But they were lobbied by Anheuser-Busch and others to exempt hops from the required ingredients list for certified organic beers. In other words, A-B and some others, think a beer should be allowed to be labeled USDA Certified Organic even if it is brewed with hops grown with pesticides.

Some people disagree. The comments below were submitted to the USDA by Lakefront Brewery president Russell Klisch. As you’ll see, Russ thinks organic hops should be required in organic beers and he makes a strong argument supporting that position. Here are his comments verbatim as submitted in the public record.

RE: Docket No. AMS-TM-07-0032; TM-07-05
March 16, 2007

To the Review Board,

Please let this letter serve as a registration AGAINST the petitioned addition of Hops to the National List (Section 205.606)

To summarize:

Organic beer should not be classified as “organic” without the use of certified organic hops

- Adding hops to the National List (Section 205.606) would irreparably damage the reputation and credibility and integrity of the organic brewing industry
-
- Adding hops to the National List (Section 205.606) would ...

Hungary: SABMiller unit to spend EUR 28 mil on plant upgrade

Dreher Breweries Ltd., the Hungarian subsidiary of SABMiller, which is one of the world's largest brewers, is planning a HUF 7 billion (EUR 27.9 m) investment in 2007 to expand production capacities, improve quality and step up efficiency at the plant, Portfolio published May 18.

Dreher, which currently operates with a 700-strong staff, has no choice but to improve its efficiency, as several cheap beer brands appeared in Hungary in the past years and margins were crunched by heavy taxes, Chairman-CEO Hector Gorosabel told business daily Világgazdaság on Friday.

Last year's massive investments and current developments show that the parent company, SABMiller, has long-term plans with its Hungarian unit, Gorosabel added.

He noted that last January's excise tax hike on alcoholic beverages (20%) and another increase in September (7%) had a hugely negative impact on breweries, which were unwilling to pass these increased burdens onto consumers, Gorosabel said.

High energy prices and increased raw material prices also caused problems for producers. While beer consumption has not declined, consumers started to switch to cheaper products, he noted.

Gorosabel ses hardly any chance for acquisitions on the Hungarian market, since 86% of the sector is ruled by three major brewers.

SABMiller boosted sales ...

World: Barley malt trade estimated at 5.4 MT in 2006/2007

After an increasing trend from 1990’s, barley malt trade has slowed down during the last 3 years, International Grains Council reported May 28. This situation is manly due to the decreasing demand from mature markets and to the growing malting capacity of main importer countries.

Brazil imports are estimated at 970,000 t, slightly higher than in 2005/2006 contrary of those of Japan – steady at 640,000 t and Russia’s – down at 250,000.

Canada exports are estimated under 700,000 t of 2005/2006 due to domestic shortage while Australia’s will increase to 680,000 t.

Canada: Federal government funds project evaluating barley's potential as biofuel feedstock

A project to evaluate barley's potential in Canada's rapidly evolving biofuels industry has received funding of $262,000 from the Biofuels Opportunities for Producers Initiative (BOPI), Canadian News Wire reported May 25. The funding has been made available through the Agriculture and Food Council that administers Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Program. The three-phase Barley and Bioproducts Opportunities Project (BBOP) is jointly funded and managed by the Western Barley Growers Association and the

Alberta Barley Commission. BBOP is supported by industry partners Syngenta ($45,000), Ceapro ($10,000), Wilbur-Ellis Canada ($2,000) and Parkland Agri Services ($1,000). In all, BBOP will invest $380,000 in examining barley's feasibility in a number of emerging applications; specifically, researchers will study the opportunities and challenges growers would face to establish regional, barley-based ethanol production facilities. The project will also look at removing valuable fractions from barley prior to ethanol production and using a byproduct of barley ethanol production - distilled grains - in commercial applications, including cattle feed.

"Barley is already one of Western Canada's most important crops due to its role in Canada's beef industry, domestic and international malting and brewing, and agronomic rotational management," said Doug ...

Australia: ABB reports AU$18.8 million six month net profit

Listed, integrated agricultural company ABB Grain Ltd reported a net profit after tax of AU$18.8 million for the six months ending 31 March 2007, according to company’s press release, May 28.

The Adelaide-headquartered company announced an interim fully franked dividend for B-class share-holders of 5.0 cents per share, which will be payable on 4 July (with a record date of 15 June 2007).

ABB managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said today’s results, while lower than the previous corresponding period, were consistent with the company’s full year profit forecast.

“Obviously we couldn’t escape Australia’s most devastating drought in 25 years but the worst effects have been offset by strong malt and grain marketing earnings,” he said.

“Despite some very tough conditions last harvest – resulting in the lowest volume of receivals in South Australia for 25 years – this result reflects a significant improvement over comparable low receivals years experienced before our merger in 2004 with AusBulk,” Mr Iwaniw said.

ABB’s total grain receivals in the last SA harvest was only 1.8 million tonnes, compared to 6.6 m/tonnes in 2005/2006 and 5.9 m/tonnes for the five-year average.

“The result was mainly due to stronger malt revenues and grain marketing, including a full half-year operation of ...
