Brewery News
Hong Kong: Kingway Brewery sees break-even at new plants in 2008

Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd. , Heineken's partner in China, expects three of its newest plants to break even by end-2008, a key step on the way to expanding beyond the country's affluent south, Reuters reported June 7.

But the firm warned that gross margins would slide this year because of rising malt prices and cut-throat competition with the likes of SABMiller Plc. in the world's largest market for beer consumption.

Kingway, about a fifth owned by Heineken via a joint venture, already commands over 50 percent of the market in China's southern city of Shenzhen. It has opened plants in Tianjin, Chengdu and Xian in the past 12 months to try and build a nationwide brand.

"The focus going forward is still going to be Guangdong province; that will remain our core market," director and chief financial officer Anna Liang told Reuters on Thursday. "Tsingtao, CR Snow, and others have done very well outside of Guangdong, but that market is still big enough to accommodate another brand."

Each of the new plants cost roughly 400 million yuan ($52 million) and has the capacity to produce 200,000 tonnes a year out of Kingway's current 1.5 million tonne capacity.

Kingway now hopes ...

Russia: Russia to increase beer production by 10% in 2007

Russian breweries will increase beer production by 10% in 2007 from year-earlier levels, news agency Interfax reported, citing the chairman of the Russian Brewers committee Vyacheslav Mamontov, Dow Jones Newswires announced June 8.

He said the unusually warm winter and early spring were behind an almost 30% jump in beer production between January and April, although those growth rates will likely dip towards the end of the year.

Russia ranks fifth in global beer output, with 9.98 billion liters of beer produced in 2006, up 9.8% on 2005.

France: Strike at Kronenbourg to continue

Workers at the Kronenbourg brewery at Obernai in north east France have voted to continue a strike against compulsory overtime and in support of a wage rise, Euro News reported June 7. The unions said they have completely shut down production at the brewery which is owned by the British company Scottish & Newcastle.

One striker explained: "I prefer to work 35 hours a week and live my life not spending Saturdays at work, but instead being with my family at the weekend."

Management want to increase production following the closure of the only other Kronenbourg brewery in France last year. Spokesman Jean Hansmaennel said: "The fact is that when you have the possibility of full order books, and for your factory to be operating at full capacity, it's better if you don't let that opportunity go by."

The trade unions have rejected an offer of an annual maximum of 48 hours of compulsory overtime together with an end of year bonus if production targets are met.

Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar has started to distribute Danish beer Carlsberg

Czech state-run brewery Budejovicky Budvar has started to distribute Danish beer Carlsberg, seeking to sell 2,000 hectolitres this year, Budvar officials said, according to Prague Daily Monitor, June 8.

Budvar is the first Czech brewery to offer beer produced by another company abroad. The cooperation between Budvar and Carlsberg started in January, when Carlsberg started to sell Budvar lager in Scandinavia and Croatia.

Carlsberg's rivals in the Czech Republic will include Heineken and Stella Artois. Heineken sold 11,000 hectolitres in the country last year and expects to double the amount this year.

Budvar will sell Carlsberg above all to retail chains, luxury restaurants, international pubs and clubs. A pint will cost about Kc19.5 in shops, against Kc15.9 charged for a pint of Budvar lager.

"Carlsberg will not only enrich our supply, but we hope it will also improve our position for negotiations with retail chains," said Budvar sales director Robert Chrt.

Budvar's step is a reaction to a forecast of demand on the Czech beer market. Experts predict a gradual growth in demand for imported beer.

Some 215,000 hectolitres of foreign beer was sold in the Czech Republic in 2005. In 2008, the volume should rise to 231,000 hectolitres owing to tourists and foreigners living in ...

Belgium: InBev execs say Anheuser merger inevitable

A merger between InBev and U.S. brewer Anheuser-Busch is inevitable in the long run, Belgian business weekly Trends said on Thursday, citing what it called senior InBev figures, Reuters reported June 7.

Shares in InBev, now the world's second-largest brewer by volume, have risen 17 percent since rumors intensified in mid-February that the two major brewers would join forces.

The Dow Jones Stoxx European food and beverage index has risen 2 percent in that time.

Brazilian newspaper Valor Economico said then that the two companies were in talks, albeit still at a preliminary stage. It also cited an unnamed investment banker as saying a merger had "big chances of happening one day".

Trends magazine said on Thursday that senior figures at Belgium's InBev believed a merger with Anheuser-Busch at some point "belonged to the nature of things".

InBev, whose key international brands are Stella Artois, Beck's, Brahma and Leffe, is principally active in Latin America and western Europe, with growing interests in Asia and eastern Europe.

Anheuser-Busch, whose products include Budweiser and Michelob, is the largest U.S. brewer.

Analysts argue a merger would find few problems with regulators given the limited overlap, although some question the amount of synergies that could be reached.

The two already have a ...

Belarus: Krinitsa Brewery put up for sale

The refusal of Belarus to sell the majority stake in Krinitsa Brewery Holding to Russia’s Baltika in 2000 hasn’t terminated its plans to make private the brewing leader of the country, Kommersant published June 7.

The assets, which worth is estimated at $200 million, are being claimed by SABMiller, Heineken and BBH.
All Krinitsa, including breweries in Minsk and Brest (the aggregate capacity of 1.8 million hectoliters) and Belarus-biggest malthouse Belsolod, has been put up for sale, said a source with a brewing company operating in Belarus. Krinitsa covers 40 percent of the local market and its estimate is $200 million. The tender results could be expected in a month and a half.

“SABMiller, BBH, Heineken, Sun InBev and Detroit Belarus Brewing Company bid at the first stage of the tender, but only SABMiller, BBH and Heineken have survived,” the source said.

Belgospishcheprom chief Ivan Danchenko and Krinitsa Director Grigory Pitkevich confirmed the information. According to Danchenko, $200 million is “the estimate given to the brewery by potential buyers but the final price will be established during the tender.”

The tender for Krinitsa is the second attempt of Belarus to dispose of it. In 2000, BBH-owned Baltika endeavored to acquire 50 percent ...

Malt News
Europe: EU maltsters booked 1.6 Mill. tons of export licences by end May

EU maltsters booked 1.6 mil tons of export licences by end May, analysts reported June 5. The number may reach 1.7 to 1.8 mil tons by end June, the end of the crop year. Therefore EU malt exports will drop by 400 to 500,000 tons from last year and even by 700,000 tons from the record year of 2003/04.

At the same time there is no malt available for sale any more for 2007, advanced call-offs by brewers cannot always be fulfilled by the malting industry. Sales have progressed very far for 2008.

Barley News
Scandinavia: Prices up for 2007 barley crop

After the “first” rains in France in week 19-20 the market took a relaxed attitude but only to be worried again, when the farmers in parts of France, Southern Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine could derive from their field walks, that the rain had arrived too late, H. Abildstrøm & Co ApS reported June 5. Thus after having seen prices for 2007 crop dropping by 4-6 € during abt 10 days they gained again up to today 10-12 €. The recent supply/demand prognosis for 2007/2008 is beginning to look very tight and is contributing to the support of the underlying firmness.

Crop 2008 is still in focus but only with limited turn over up here. Whenever a malt-contract is being concluded we recognize the demand for barley cover even into 2009. Presently market rather uncertain which is mirroring French conditions. The English and the Scandinavians have no hurry to add to their already substantial sales but closely watching field development. This type of vacuum could eventual last till harvest or be broken by bad news from somewhere (globally). Meantime sellers will be scarce.

Calling March – April – May for the spring months we have again scored a record ...

Europe: Barley crops are looking much better than four weeks ago except in the Balkan countries

After a long drought period from end March till early May, West and Central European weather returned to normal again, the May was cool and rainy, albeit with great regional variations, analysts announced June 5.

Barley crops are looking much better than four weeks ago except in the Balkan countries. In the Iberian Peninsula rainfall has been abundant all winter and spring long, crop prospects are excellent. The Madrid Ministry estimates a crop of 10.4 Mill. Tons vs. 8.2 Mill. last year.

In France, England, Germany, Czech, Slovakia and South Poland effects of the draught are obvious, the number of ears per square meter is less than average, lower yields are forecast. One hope is that barley kernels will be plump, thereby reducing yield losses. Barley fields in Scotland, Denmark and Sweden are in fine shape; also Northern Poland reports good prospects. Very poor crops are forecast for Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, although Hungary and Romania may harvest some reasonably good winter barley.

The Mediterranean: Barley crop prospects are variable

Barley crop prospects in the Mediterranean are variable, analysts said June 5. Morocco is harvesting an exceptionally poor crop, estimated at 800,000 tons vs. 2.5 mil tons last year.

The government will subsidize imports, 157,000 tons were bought in a tender during May, further 150,000 tons are tendered for July arrival. Prices ranged from US$ 240 to 255 CFR, for barley from France and the Black Sea. Jordan purchased 100,000 tons at US$ 253 and 259.50 CFR. The IGC expects an increased feed barley demand of Saudi-Arabia in the new grain year.

Canada: Barley futures bloom on rumours about monopoly's end

Barley futures at the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange set contract highs on rumours that Ottawa was set to dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board's barley monopoly earlier than Aug. 1, traders said, according to Reuters, June 7.

The government was expected to make the CWB an optional marketing entity for barley sales to maltsters and export markets as early as June 15, some traders said, while others said talk centered around July 1. "The government might be moving a lot sooner than people think on the date," a trader said.

The CWB, one of the world's largest grain sellers, focuses on wheat marketing, but barley sales accounted for about 11 percent of its $3.5 billion in revenue in the year ended July 31, 2006.

The Conservative government's plans to end the monopoly have been contentious, with some farmers looking forward to having the option to sell directly to buyers, and others decrying the loss of the "single desk" they say gives farmers marketing clout.

The CWB has said it may bow out of barley marketing if the government goes ahead with its plans, and has suggested the government could face legal challenges because of the change.

The government was considering a wide range of comments on its ...
