Brewery News
Mongolia: APB opens brewery in Mongolia to brew Tiger

Venturing into East Central Asia, Tiger has etched its footprint in Mongolia by becoming the first foreign beer brand to be brewed there, according to APB’s news room, June 19. Brewed-In-Mongolia Tiger is now tapped from the newly-commissioned brewery of MCS-Asia Pacific Brewery LLC (MCS-APB), a 55-45 joint venture between Singapore’s Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) and MCS Holdings LLC (MCS) from Mongolia.

Located in Mongolia's capital city, Ulaanbaatar, the US$20 million (approximately S$30 million) brewery sits on a site of 5 hectares. The plant is currently equipped with an annual production capacity of 120,000 hectolitres or more than 60,000 bottles (330ml) of Tiger each day.

Pleased with the milestone, Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB said, "APB is optimistic about the potential of the Mongolian beer market and anticipates its investment there to succeed as Mongolia is one of the most liberal and foreign investor friendly economies in Asia. Coupled with its improving economy which grew 7.5% in 2006 and the increasing preference for beers amongst younger adult drinkers as well as a shift in consumer preference for beer over vodka, the Mongolian beer market looks set to grow further. Last year, Mongolia’s beer market stood at ...

Bulgaria: Carlsberg to invest BGN 20 mil in Bulgarian brewery

Danish brewer Carlsberg said on Friday it would invest BGN 20 mil over the next three years in upgrading its Bulgarian subsidiary Shumensko, according to Novinite, June 15.

"On the eve of the 125th anniversary of the Shumensko brand, we want to reaffirm our commitment to invest in the successful development of the brewery and the brand," Shumensko CEO Alexandar Grancharov said in a statement.

"In addition to constant upgrades to our production facilities, we plan to build a new water treatment plant, which will be ready by the end of 2008," he added.

The company has invested BGN 50 M in production upgrades since 2003 and a further BGN 17 M in marketing the brand.

Carlsberg took over Bulgarian brewers Shumensko and Pirinsko in 2002, boosting its stakes in the two companies a year later and merging them to create Carlsberg Bulgaria in 2004.

The company is the third-biggest brewer in Bulgaria with a market share of 22% at the end of last year. Bulgarian per capita consumption of beer is 68 litres, according to Carlsberg data.

Chile: Merrill increases Chile Brewer CCU target price to $40/ADR

Investment bank Merrill Lynch (MER) Tuesday increased its target price for Chilean Beverage Company and brewer Compania Cervecerias Unidas SA (CU) to $40.00 per American Depository Receipt from its previous target of $35/ADR, according to Dow Jones Newswires, June 19.

CCU, Chile's dominant beer producer, has a commanding domestic market share.

"The Chilean consumer is among the most vibrant in Latin America," with a buoyant economy to shore up CCU's bottom line, Merrill research analysts said in their note. Rising income levels support sales of premium and "super-premium" beer brands, they added.

Corporate restructuring - including "a net headcount reduction of about 6%" - will help improve efficiency, they also said.

Controlled by local investment holding company Quinenco SA (QUINENCO.SN), CCU is one of the few major brewers to remain independent in Latin America, making it a potential takeover candidate.

"CCU provides exposure to potential consolidation. A control premium for CCU would add 30% or more to our price objective," the analysts said.

At 1608 GMT, CCU shares were traded up 1.3% at 3,870.00 pesos ($7.33) in Santiago, widely outperforming the benchmark Ipsa index, which was up 0.1%.

Romania: Beer market reaches 1 bil euros in an extremely hot summer

Beer consumption will rech a record quantity of 20.3 mil hl in 2007, 25% higher than in 2006, Ziarul Financiar published June 15. In consequence the beer market will surpass 1 bil euros in 2007 compared with 752 mil euros in 2006, producers estimate.

The “big 4”: SABMiller Plc, United Breweries Bereprod SRL (URBB), Heineken and InBev, forecast the highest sales from their arrival in Romania.

“The beer market is growing continuously. It is a trend which we expected, taking into consideration the Romanians increasing purchasing capacity, products quality improvement, investments in promotion and, why not, the hot weather”, Constantin Bratu, “Romanian Brewers Association” general director, said in a statement.

“I estimate an increasing trend in 2007 of 25%”, Bratu added.

Beer sales constituted 2.54 mil hl in 2007, for the “big 4”, compared with 1.85 mil hl in 2006.

URBB, the producer of Tuborg and Carlberg, announced a 25% growth in beer sales. In the same time, for InBev, the producer of Bergenbier, Stella Artois, Beck’s, Leffe, Lowenbrau and Noroc, the increase was of 40%.

Beer companies are trying to get bigger market shares this summer, driven by the consumer’s behaviour, influenced by weather conditions.

Yet in the firs month of the year, the brewers invested ...

India: Beer consumption rose 27% in 2006-07

Beer consumption in the country hit a new high with 132.7 million cases of the alcoholic beverage, worth Rs 10,000 crore, consumed in 2006-07, Business Standard published June 20. This implies a growth of 27 per cent in beer sales over the last year’s 104.3 million cases.

North India continued to register healthy growth rate with 45 per cent rise in beer sales. However, southern part of the country remained the largest regional beer market with sales of 471 million litres, valued at more than Rs 4,000 crore. The north accounted for 35 million cases, nearly 25 per cent of the national market.

“The shift from auction system to licensing regime, adopted by states such as Rajasthan and Punjab, has resulted in exponential growth in the sale of beer in these states. The prices dropped by at least Rs 20 a bottle in Punjab and Haryana, resulting in 500 per cent and 200 per cent growth in sales respectively,” Sandeep Kumar of All India Brewers Association (AIBA) said.

According to industry experts harsh summer across the country also contributed to higher consumption of beer in 2006-07.

Malt News
UK: Greencore Malt plant expansion

Scottish spring barley growers have received a further boost with news of another new plant to provide malt to the burgeoning Scotch whisky industry, FWi reported June 18.

Irish-owned Greencore Malt is increasing capacity at its Buckie plant in North-east Scotland from 40,000t to 60,000t in time for the 2008 harvest.

This follows news two weeks ago of a £12m investment by Simpsons Malt to increase production at its Berwick-on-Tweed maltings by 40,000t.

Scotland has lost 120,000t of malting capacity in recent years as a result of plant closures and distillers are concerned about future supplies of malt.

With the world-wide increase in demand for Scotch whisky, distillers are offering higher prices and long-term contracts to secure future supplies.

A £30-£40/tonne increase in forward contract prices for malting barley to £110-£120/tonne for this year’s harvest has halted the decline in the Scottish spring barley acreage which this year is estimated at 210,000ha.

EU: Market analysts raise their estimate of domestic EU malt demand in 2007 and 2008

Since 2005 EU malting capacities have been reduced by 300,000 tons, mostly inefficient units of large malting groups. Apart from two bankruptcies in Germany, the small and medium size maltsters have survived the cruel price war of the years 2004 till 2006.

The present malting capacity is 8,7 Mill. tons, production during the present crop year was no more than 8,3 Mill. tons. The beer output in the whole world, and also in the EU (Germany, Poland, Czech and Slovakia report excellent results) is surprisingly good and Scottish distillers are increasing their whisky production.

Market analysts raise their estimate of domestic EU malt demand to 6.8 million tonnes in 2007 and to 6.9 million tonnes in 2008. That leaves a theoretical export surplus of 1.5 million tonnes this year. No wonder that supplies are very tight in spite of sharply reduced exports. In most cases malt is leaving the malting plants straight from the kiln, requirements of a minimum storage time of malt before delivery, as well as specifications of barley varieties and quality parameters could not always be fully respected since the crop failure of 2006.

UK: Anxieties over malt supply are good news for growers

The growth of the biofuels industry is raising concerns among UK maltsters and brewers that it could threaten the long-term supply of malt, says Gleadell Agriculture's sales director, Stuart Shand, The Journal published June 20.

In the last few years, the planted acreage of malting barley has dropped dramatically as farmers have switched to sowing oilseed rape and wheat. However, Mr Shand believes new anxieties about guaranteeing future security of supply is good news for growers.

"Brewers are having to look at longer-term malting commitments, and this is leading to contracts that are more favourable to growers. The contracts are very competitively priced at the moment, and will help secure a healthy gross margin for the crop over the next three years."

Trevor Wright, raw materials director of Simpsons, an independent maltster producing 240,000mt per year for the brewing and distilling sector, said steps must be taken to encourage growers to continue to include barley in their cropping rotations.

He believed biofuels competition was making it easier to bring the pricing situation home to brewers.

"Whereas set-aside has also been a threat in the past, all you could show brewers was the reduced acreage of barley as a result. But with biofuels, it is easier ...

Barley News
Australia: Barley production is forecast to increase to over 9 million tonnes

In the June release of their quarterly crop report, ABARE (the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics) forecast Australia's 2007/08 barley production to increase by 5.3 million tonnes to over 9.1 million tonnes.

In New South Wales the area planted to barley in 2007-08 is forecast to increase by around 12 per cent to 1 million hectares, largely refl ecting the earlier start to the season. However, in northern parts of New South Wales, it is expected that some of the area planned for wheat will be planted to barley, because of lower soil moisture profi les. Assuming average yields, barley production in 2007-08 is forecast to be around 2 million tonnes, almost four times that produced in 2006-07.

The area planted to barley in Victoria in 2007-08 is forecast to rise by 8 per cent to 920 000 hectares. Production is forecast to exceed 2 million tonnes, almost four times what was produced last season, reflecting the increased area sown, combined with a return to average yields.

Queensland’s area planted to barley is forecast to fall by around 6 per cent to 85 000 hectares in 2007-08, primarily refl ecting expected lower sowings in southern Queensland, particularly in the western Darling ...

EU: EU faces another year of tight malting barley supplies and high prices

June and July weather can still change prospects to better or worse, but in any case the EU faces another year of tight malting barley supplies and high prices, market analysts commented in a report on June 4th.

World: Barley crop prospects are fair to good

The USA expect to harvest a large crop of good quality, weather conditions have favoured the country this year. In Canada planting is still not finished, market analysts commented June 4th.

The IGC had taken back its crop estimate from 13 to 12 Mill. tons, but now farmers may switch intended wheat acreage to the shorter cycle barley and the barley crop may still be quite large. Late seeded barley will not qualify for malting, but nevertheless malting barley supplies are expected to be plentiful.

The problem No. 1 remains the Canadian Wheat Board and the future marketing of barley. At present the CWB cannot execute old crop and new crop barley sales, which puts maltsters into serious difficulties.

In Australia barley planting advances well in the South and East, slower in the West. Rainfalls are called good on the Eastern side of the country, but the West still needs better precipitation.

Canada: CWB seeks judicial review to end barley market uncertainty

The CWB will ask the courts to review the legality of the federal government’s attempts to remove barley from farmers’ single desk, the CWB’s farmer-controlled board of directors announced in a press release, June 18. The CWB’s application will be filed immediately.
“The board has decided to take action in the interests of farmers’ commercial and financial viability,” board chair Ken Ritter said after CWB directors met by teleconference this morning. “We again invite the federal government join with us so that legal certainty may be established as soon as possible.”

Ritter noted the CWB’s core mandate is focused on farmers’ financial returns. “Market uncertainty costs farmers money. It is therefore our obligation and our responsibility to take steps that ensure their commercial interests are protected,” he said. “We also need to move quickly to safeguard western Canadian farmers’ reputation for reliability.”

The government announced on March 28 that it intended to make regulatory amendments that would remove barley from Prairie farmers’ single-desk marketer on August 1. The accelerated process has created great uncertainty in the barley market, which risks leaving many producers short of their expected returns and liable for contract defaults – both individually and through the CWB as their ...
