Brewery News
Russia: Ochakovo brewery property could be seized

Russia's environmental watchdog could raise the question of seizing the property of the Moscow-based Ochakovo brewery if tests confirm the enterprise is responsible for polluting a nearby river, a deputy watchdog head said, according to RIA Novosti, July 9.

"If tests show that drains emptying into the Neverka River belong to the Ochakovo brewery, there are two options - to demand that damage be compensated, or, as stipulated by law, to confiscate the cause of the offense, that is, its property," Oleg Mitvol said, adding that such measures had not been used before.

The Federal Service for the Oversight of Natural Resources suspended the operation of the brewery Wednesday for five days over its alleged environmental violations. On Friday, Mitvol said he asked a court to suspend the Ochakovo operation for 90 days.

Mitvol said the tests would be ready Friday.

Representatives of Ochakovo, which also produces kvass, mineral waters, alcoholic beverages, wine, vodka and liqueurs, called the suspension decision premature.

Earlier it was reported that residents of Moscow's western districts near the Ochakovo brewery filed numerous complaints that the small rivers Neverka and Setun smelled of beer.

Japan: Asahi replaces Kirin as Japan beer market leader

Asahi Breweries Ltd replaced Kirin Brewery Co as Japan's beer and beer-like beverage market leader in the first half of this year for the first time in two years, industry data revealed Wednesday, July 11 as per Japan Today.

Even though it posted a 1.5% year-to-year decline in shipments, Asahi boosted its market share to 37.4% to barely outstrip Kirin, whose share fell to 37.3% with shipments decreasing 2.7%, according to data released by beer makers and the Brewers Association of Japan.

Beer shipments by the five largest Japanese brewers totalled 334,353 kiloliters in June, down 9.3 percent from a year earlier, marking the second straight month of year-on-year decreases, according to data compiled by an industry group, AFX News Limited reported July 11.

Shipments of low-malt "happoshu" dropped 9.1 percent on the year to 140,244 kiloliters last month, while shipments of the so-called "third-sector" alcoholic beverages increased 15.2 percent to 132,849 kiloliters.

Japan's five largest brewers are Sapporo Breweries Ltd, Asahi Breweries Ltd and Kirin Brewery Co Ltd, all of which are listed, and Suntory and Orion, both unlisted.

Sales of beer in May and June at major supermarket chain store Aeon Co. surged 30 percent year-on-year.

Belgium: InBev is selling the pubs to focus on brewing beer

InBev announced that it has entered into an agreement with Cofinimmo under which InBev Belgium will sell 90% of Immobrew S.A./N.V., a subsidiary which directly owns 824 pubs and some residential real estate locations in Belgium and indirectly 245 in the Netherlands, for 419 million euro for 90%, on a debt and cash free basis, according to company?s press release, July 6. At the same time InBev will enter into a lease agreement with Immobrew and some of its affiliates.

Consistent with InBev?s commitment to free up capital invested in non-core activities, InBev has decided to sell parts of its real estate assets in Belgium and the Netherlands, thereby enhancing the focus on its core beer business. The portfolio is sold to Cofinimmo, the largest listed real estate company in Belgium.

The structure of the transaction ensures that InBev Belgium will retain a 10% interest in Immobrew. Immobrew will hold lease agreements (commercial types) of 27 years (plus renewal mechanism) with InBev for an initial rent of 26.8 million euro per annum (indexed to CPI).

InBev?s business in pubs and bars is a tradition and strength, and will remain a key factor for success in connecting with consumers and InBev ...

Thailand: Beer market to grow this year rather than decline as forecasted earlier

The local beer market will likely pick up this year rather than decline as forecast earlier, but the growth will be the result of price distortions in the budget-beer segment, according to executives of Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co (TAPB), the brewer of Heineken beer, Bangkok Post reported July 11. While the ongoing price war might be good for consumers in the short term, it could have a negative impact on the industry as well as on drinkers in the long term, said Singapore-born Ronnie Teo, the company's commercial director.

''It would dilute the industry's value since the average price is cut down. At the same time, there will not be innovations for consumers,'' said Mr Teo.

Singha representatives rallied last week against alleged price dumping by ThaiBev.

Prin Malakul, the corporate affairs director for TAPB, said he had revised upward his projection for the market this year because the economy segment, which accounted for 81% of the market last year, was being driven by Archa beer. The segment could increase to 84% and eat into the shares of the standard and premium segments, he said.

Thailand's beer market was valued at 95.8 billion baht last year, up from 82 ...

Czech Republic: Budvar sells 11 pct more beer in H1 2007 than year ago

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar sold 319,737 hectolitres of beer in H1 2007, 11 percent more than a year ago, media agent Katerina Kocianova told CTK, July 10.

Sale of alcohol-free beer grew by 55 percent. Alcohol-free beer, however, accounts for just 2 percent of the brewery's total beer output.

Budvar representatives said the brewery's H1 results were almost four times better than the development of the country's entire beer market which grew by 3 percent according to estimates of the Czech Brewing and Malting Association.

Budejovicky Budvar is the third largest Czech brewery and a leading beer exporter.

Last year, it exported a record 556,000 hectolitres, up 7 percent year-on-year. Output rose by 5 percent to 1.151 million hectolitres.

Gross profit was up 15 percent at Kc267.2m in 2006.

Budvar has invested about Kc3bn in modernisation since 1991.

India: Asia Pacific targets at least 5% of Indian beer market

Chief executive officer and president of Asia Pacific operations of the world?s leading beer company Anheuser-Busch International Inc, Stephen J. Burrows is brewing a long-term strategy for India, The Wall Street Journal reported July 9. In an exclusive interview with Mint, Burrows, who was in Mumbai last week to launch the Budweiser brand in the domestic market through a joint venture with the Hyderabad-based Crown Beers Group, said India is strategically an important market for the company in Asia. Burrows says the company will invest enough money in India to replicate the success of its China foray.

Edited excerpts:
Why did Anheuser-Busch, which operates through subsidiaries in most markets around the world, opt for a joint venture in India?

Every country has its own business characteristics in terms of regulations, market conditions, consumer attitude, etc. Considering the unique nature of Indian regulations and market culture, we realized that a local business group, which has a rich brewery business experience, would be of tremendous help for us to establish business here. The local partnership in fact helped us enter the market in less than year since our initial proposal. Had we decided to come to the market on our own, it would have ...

Malt News
World: The increased beer output may lead to a shortage of malt

South America disposes of a malting capacity of 1.6 million tonnes. In spite of the recent construction of two new malthouses in Argentina the increased beer output has led to an acute shortage of malt.

Australia can export 600,000 tonnes per year, it is reported to be well sold for 2008. China has entered the export market in a modest way, having sold this year to Taiwan, SE Asia and the Russian Far East, the total quantity may come close to 100,000 tonnes.

Russia and Ukraine construct new capacities of 200,000 and 150,000 tonnes respectively. They aim at complete self-sufficiency, but the fast increase of Russian beer sales may still necessitate imports in the future.

Barley News
Russia: Russia increases barley imports

Russia increased barley imports to 142,500 tonnes for $33.2 million in the first five months of 2007 from 74,000 tonnes for $11.6 million in the same period of 2006, the Federal Customs Services said, according to Interfax News Agency, July 9.
