About Anadolu Efes

USA: Anheuser-Busch reports increased sales and earnings for the second quarter and first six months of 2007

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. reported that second quarter 2007 net sales increased 6.1 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding one-time items in both years) increased 7.4 percent. For the first six months of 2007, net sales increased 4.5 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding one-time items) improved 6.2 percent, according to company’s press release, July 25.

“Anheuser-Busch had a solid quarter in many aspects of our core operations.” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company. “Led by U.S. beer operations, all of our business segments reported improved earnings in the second quarter and the company is on track to deliver accelerating earnings growth in the second half of the year. The positive outlook is based on the favorable pricing environment, our broadened U.S. beer portfolio to access high-margin growth opportunities, successful productivity improvement initiatives that are mitigating cost pressures and enhanced earnings contributions from our international beer segment, led by Grupo Modelo. We continue to target long-term earnings per share growth in the 7 to 10 percent range and expect the company’s 2007 earnings per share increase to exceed this range.”

Consistent with its pattern for pricing actions in recent years, the company expects ...

Australia & New Zeeland: Lion Nathan to sell Auckland Brewery

Lion Nathan said today it is selling its Auckland brewery site to AMP Capital Investors for NZ$162 million, and will build a new New Zeeland manufacturing plant for NZ$250 million, Reuters reported July 26.

The sale was subject to Overseas Investment Office approval. AMP Capital intended to develop the Newmarket property for high-end residential, retail and office use, Lion Nathan said.

Most of the sale price will be payable when Lion Nathan leaves the site in about four years, but $50 million will be realised in this financial year.

"A once in 50-year investment was needed if we were to remain at our current site," Lion Nathan chief executive Rob Murray said.

"Over the years Newmarket has changed into a light commercial, retail and residential area.” "As a manufacturing site the property is now landlocked, making access and expansion increasingly difficult."

He said Lion would build a new manufacturing and warehousing facility in Auckland for about NZ$250m, which would better align production and its supply chain with market demand.

Lion has secured options on a number of Auckland sites, but did not expect to make a decision until the end of November.

Once completed, the facility was expected to yield up to NZ$15m a year in earnings ...

Romania: Brewers announce 30% beer sales growth in H1 2007

Romanian Brewers Association’s members, Heineken Romania, InBev Romania, United Romanian Breweries, Bereprod and Ursus Breweries announce beer sales of 7.29 mil hectolitres, 30% more than in H1 2006, Wall Street reported July 25.

Entire beer market reached almost 9.4 mil hectolitres, about 20% more than in H1 2006. According to Association’s general director, Constantin Bratu, this increase is due to favourable weather conditions in firs six month of 2007 and to the increase in population’s purchase power.

Romanian Brewers Association represents 70% of Romanian beer market. Asociation’s members brought more than 550 mil euros in investments.

Malt News
Europe: Smaller export due to the lack of malt

EU malt export licence bookings from July 1, 2006, until June 26, 2007, (probably the last statistical report of the grain year 2006/07) were 1,726 Mill. tons, 455.000 tons less than last year and even 750.000 tons less than in the record export year of 2003/04, analysts reported July 2.

Maltsters’ silos are empty; there is no malt available in the EU for sale in 2007, and very little for 2008. The smaller export sales were not due to a lack of interest by foreign buyers, but due to a lack of malt.

Barley News
USA: Barley crops look good in North America

Barley crops look very good in North America after perfect growing conditions, analysts reported July 2.

The USDA published new acreage figures; barley was planted on 1,636 Mill. Ha vs. 1,397 Mill. HA a year ago. A crop of 5 Mill. tons is possible vs. 3,9 Mill. tons last year. The latest Canadian forecast gives a barley crop of 12,5 Mill. tons, exactly 25 % better than last year.

Time being the quality expectations are high, both the U.S. and Canada will be able to export good quantities of feed and malting barley. The Canadian problem of the Wheat Board’s future has shifted to the courts, export markets are blocked by the uncertainty, who will export Canadian barley in the future.

Australia: Second distribution for ABB’s 2006/2007 extended barley pool

South Australian barley growers will begin receiving second distribution payments for grain they delivered to ABB Grain’s 2006/2007 extended pool and standard loan pool, according to ABB’s press release, July 26.

ABB’s commodity pools manager, Jonathan Wilson, said the gross value of the distribution will be $120 tonne for malting 1 barley, $90 tonne for malting 3 barley and $80 tonne for feed barley.

“The total value of the gross payments is $7 million, of which approximately $4.4 million is direct payments,” Mr Wilson said. “This distribution takes the total gross payments so far to $270 tonne for malting 1 barley, $215/t for malting 3 barley and $200/t for feed barley.”

Factored into the above payments will be deductions for research levies, a portion of the domestic freight component and bulk handling deductions of $9.20 for malting 1, $9.20 for malting 3 and $8.20 for feed.

Growers who have chosen the extended pool payment option will receive their second distribution as a direct payment. The GST component is provided with the payment.

For growers in the extended pool option who have activated a line of credit, the distribution for the portion of their equity which the line of credit has been applied will be ...

Canada: Ottawa has power to shift barley sales, court told

Ottawa can strip barley from the Canadian Wheat Board's sales monopoly without a parliamentary vote because it is only reversing a regulatory move, not changing legislation, the government's lawyer said, according to Reuters, July 26.

The Conservative government is trying to fend off the wheat board's Federal Court challenge to its plan to give Western Canadian barley farmers the choice to sell directly to buyers or through the CWB, starting next Wednesday.

Federal Justice Dolores Hansen said at the conclusion of the two-day hearing that she plans to issue her decision in the case by Tuesday night.

Government lawyer Steve Vincent said Ottawa has the power under laws governing the board to repeal the inclusion of barley as part of the CWB's responsibility if it is not altering the single-desk regime.

Barley was added without legislative change in the 1940s and there was no formal shift in rules regarding its inclusion or removal in 1998 amendments to the board's governing act, Vincent said.

"The whole history of barley is a regulatory matter," Vincent said.

The board and its supporters hope to stave off the exclusion on August 1 of barley from the single-desk selling system, a move Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl has championed since the Conservatives ...
