Chile: CCU S.A. reports consolidated second quarter 2007 and year to date results

CCU announced its consolidated financial results, stated in Chilean GAAP for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2007, in a press release published August 1. All US$ figures are based on the exchange rate effective June 30, 2007 (US$1.00 = Ch$526.86).
COMMENTS FROM THE CEO
We are very pleased with the results obtained during the second quarter of 2007. Consolidated volumes increased 4.2%, revenues grew 6.7%, operating income increased 73.0%, net income grew 86.5% and EBITDA increased 25.3%. These results are attributable to an improved performance in all of our business segments during the quarter, as a consequence of strong volumes, higher margins and a controlled cost structure.

The Chilean beer segment performed well during this period, with 13.5% higher operating income, mainly explained by higher volumes and prices that increased by 1.9% and 3.9%, respectively, as well as control over expenses which served to offset some costs pressures during the quarter. In April, we launched Cristal Black Lager, a brand extension of our main brand Cristal, a dark beer with an intense color and a toasted aroma, in addition to the red beer Cristal Red Alelaunched a year ago.

The Argentine beer business grew its revenues by 20.0% ...

Japan: Asahi H1 profit down 19% after weak beer sales

Japan's Asahi Breweries Ltd. reported a 19 percent fall in first-half profit and cut its full-year outlook after heavy investments in advertising failed to jolt beer sales, Reuters reported August 2.

Japan's biggest brewer, the maker of the Super Dry brand, said its January-June operating profit came to 23.1 billion yen ($195 million), falling short of 25 billion yen forecast in a poll of three analysts by Reuters Estimates.

During that period, the firm spent 16 percent more on marketing, mainly to promote Super Dry beer on its 20th anniversary.

Yet its domestic beer sales fell 6.4 percent during the first half, unable to buck the declining trend in Japan's overall beer market, which has seen drinkers shift to cheaper beer-like drinks and other alcoholic beverages.

The company now expects a full-year operating profit of 88 billion yen, 5 percent lower than its previous forecast and just below its year-ago results.

That compares with 88.3 billion yen operating profit forecast by 15 analysts in a poll by Reuters Estimates.

The brewery's profit was also cut by promotional expenses and a rise in raw material costs at its non-alcoholic beverage business, the company said.

Shares of Asahi closed 1.7 percent higher at ...

Russia & Malta: Baltika starts exporting beer to Malta

Baltika Beer Company started the exports of its brands to Malta, according to company’s press release, August 1. Malta is the 43-th country in which Baltika is present.

The first shipment constituted 10,000 litres of Baltika No 3, Baltika No 7 and Baltika No 9.

The Baltika’s partner in Malta is ANELIK LTD, specialized in products distribution. It plans to distribute Baltika beer in Arkadia Foodstore and Smart Supermarket, as well as in bars and restaurants. The retail price of 1 bottle of 0.5 litres will constitute 0.58 liras (1.35 Euro).

According to “Canadean” International Research Agency, beer consumption in Malta is around 29 litres per capita. Imported beer share constitutes 37%.

Baltika is the leader of Russian brewers. It has received “Best Russian Exporter” award for thew 6th year in a row. Company’s production is exported in 43 countries. Company’s 2006 export volume constituted 1.8 mil hectolitres. At this moment, every 8th Baltika’s beer bottle is exported.

Australia: Lion Nathan set to acquire James Boag

Australian brewer James Boag has firmed as a favourite for acquisition by trans-Tasman beer, spirit and wine company Lion Nathan, Sidney Morning Herald published August 2.

JB Were beverage analyst Paul Ryan sounded a bit disappointed that the company didn't use an investor briefing at its Lidcombe brewery on Tuesday to announce a purchase.

Ryan reckons such a move would help boost investor belief that the company could reach its 7 per cent a year growth target for 2007.

The lay of the land should be clearer by November, when the company plans to use its full year result to announce whether it will spend its $300 million pot of cash on a new brand or whether it will reinvest via a buyback.

Boag is owned by Philippines food and beverage group San Miguel and estimated to be worth about $340 million.

Coca-Cola Amatil is also reportedly interested in running its rule over Boag.

A brand such as Boag would fit with Lion Nathan's increased reliance on "next generation" and "premium" beers and away from traditional "beer heartland" brands.

Similar moves are being made over the ditch where New Zealand drinkers are urged to swap an on-tap drink for a premium bottled or canned beer.

The Kiwis are ...

USA: The Boston Beer Company announces agreement with Diageo to acquire Pennsylvania Brewery

The Boston Beer Company, Inc. announced that it has signed a purchase and sale agreement with Diageo North America, Inc. to acquire a brewery located 60 miles outside of Philadelphia, for $55 million, PRNewswire reported August 2. The purchase is expected to take place in late spring 2008, subject to the satisfactory completion of due diligence by Boston Beer. If the results of the due diligence process are satisfactory, the company will discontinue exploring the option of building a new brewery in Freetown, Massachusetts.

It is estimated that the Pennsylvania brewery will initially increase Boston Beer's brewing capacity by approximately 1.6 million barrels of beer annually with the potential for expansion to over 2 million barrels with modest incremental investment. This brewery provides the company with additional flexibility and ensures adequate capacity for continued growth. Boston Beer is familiar with the site's brewhouse, having brewed some of its beer there from 1994-2001. In fact, Boston Beer won several major awards for Samuel Adams brewed at this brewery. The Pennsylvania brewery will complement the breweries that the company owns and operates in Boston, Massachusetts and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Boston Beer anticipates that the brewery will require substantial investment and renovation in order to brew ...
