0 Czech Republic: Czech beer output up at record 9.9 million hl in H1

Czech breweries put out a record 9.94 million hectolitres of beer in the first half of the year, a year-on-year growth of more than 4 percent, Czech Beer and Malt Association head Jan Vesely has told CTK, August 9.

Sales increased on both the Czech market and abroad. The growth was mainly thanks to warm weather, Vesely said, adding some brewers broke monthly records.

Rodinny pivovar Bernard put out more than 73,000 hectolitres of beer in the first half, up by 6.4 percent on the year.

"Compared with the same months in the previous years, we saw the best results in May, April and June," said Bernard spokesman Zdenek Mikulasek.

Budejovicky Budvar, the third largest Czech brewer, raised sales on the Czech market and abroad by around 11 percent to 611,507 hectolitres of beer in the first six months.

Weather continues to benefit beer sales, said Vesely, adding the third quarter affects full-year results the most.

Czech beer output will certainly reach the magic level of 20 million hectolitres this year given the first-half results, he said. Last year, output amounted to a record 19.8 million hectolitres.

Retailers also say this year's summer benefits beer sales. Peter Vrazba from retail chain Tesco Stores CR said beer sales ...

0 Denmark: Carlsberg CEO denies rumours about Scottish & Newcastle takeover

Carlsberg CEO Nils Smedegaard Andersen poured cold water on ongoing rumours that the Danish brewer is considering a bid for UK peer Scottish & Newcastle, but this doesn't mean a merger couldn't happen in the long term, analysts said, according to AFX News Limited, August 9.

Market talk has been rife over the past six months as to whether a takeover of Scottish & Newcastle is on the cards, with speculation focused on Carlsberg since the Danish brewer changed its shareholder charter to enable it to issue shares.

But Carlsberg's CEO was reported in local publication Berlingske Tidend as saying this is "wild speculation."

"We are interested in buying in growth markets (East Europe and Asia, including China)," he said in an interview with the newspaper. "If we are to buy up in West Europe, the return must be good."

In response, Sanford C Bernstein analyst Trevor Stirling told Thomson Financial News he is sceptical of a Carlsberg bid for Scottish & Newcastle, but that in the long term it is possible a deal could be done between the two, perhaps in the form of a merger of equals.

"I am sceptical of a bid, as taking maximum equity and maximum debt Carlsberg could just ...

0 Philippines: San Miguel sustains robust pace in 1st half 2007

San Miguel Corp. 1st half net income rises 81% to P7.88 billion, according to company’s press release, August 9.

Consolidated sales revenue reached P112.7 billion, 9% above the same period last year. While beer domestic and food businesses improved operating income by 21% and 10%, respectively, consolidated operating income declined to P8.20 billion. This is due to the increased costs of National Foods’ operations – a direct result of the prolonged drought in Australia. Beer international gained in the second quarter but San Miguel’s packaging and liquor subsidiaries, although improving, are still behind last year.
Consolidated net financing charges fell 44% to P2.23 billion, aided by the continuing strength of the peso. Other income, representing gains on the sale of Del Monte shares and gains from discontinued operations, pushed consolidated net income to P7.88 billion.

San Miguel’s domestic beer operations recorded 3% higher volumes, courtesy of a robust second quarter delivering for the business, 6% higher revenue at P21.2 billion. Operating income grew by 21% to P5.7 billion on account of stronger volumes and contained fixed operating expenses.

Overseas, San Miguel Brewing Int’l, Ltd. (SMBIL) ended the first semester with encouraging results. The second quarter’s operating income significantly narrowed the 1st quarter’s ...
