Brewery News
Japan: Kirin to release new 3rd-category quasi-beer to secure its position as the top player in the business segment

Kirin Brewery Co. announced on August 21st it will release a new third-category quasi-beer on Oct. 27 to secure its position as the top player in the business segment, Jiji Press communicated.

The new Sparkling Hop is mainly targeted at people in their 20s, among whom beer and beer-like beverages are losing their appeal.

The drink features a distinctive aroma created by blending Japanese and New Zealand hop varieties. Strong pressure gives the product a rich head and a refreshing finish, Kirin officials said.

Sparkling Hop is made by mixing a "happoshu" low-malt drink with spirits. Under Japan's liquor tax system, the new product is classified as a liqueur, whose tax rate is lower than those for beer and happoshu.

This is Kirin's third product in the third category, following "Ryoshitsu Sozai" and "Nodogoshi Nama." With the three products, Kirin hopes to beat out its rivals in the heavily crowded third-category market.

Sparkling Hop is expected to retail at around 135 yen for a 350-milliliter can. Sales are estimated to reach 1.6 million cases by the end of this year. Each case contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

China: Beijing Yanjing Brewery H1 net profit up 25.3 pct year-on-year on higher sales

Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co Ltd has recently posted an unaudited net profit of 193.45 mln yuan for the first half of the year, an increase by 25.3 pct from 154.42 mln achieved last year, on the back of higher sales, AFX News communicated on August 19.

The beer maker achieved core revenue of 3.78 bln yuan during the six months, compared with 3.21 bln a year ago, with operating profit rising 29.7 pct to 227.99 mln yuan from 214.29 mln.

Earnings per share stood at 0.1758 yuan, against 0.1478 a year ago, while return on net assets was 3.66 pct compared with 2.95 pct.

At the end of June, the company had total assets of 9.44 bln yuan compared with 8.79 bln a year earlier, with the net asset value per share at 4.80 yuan against 4.76 yuan a year ago.

Separately, the company said it plans to apply for a one bln yuan credit line from Minsheng Bank to meet working capital needs.

Romania: Beer consumption last year was in line with the European average of 81 litres per capita, rising by 16% year-on-year

The subsidiaries of multinationals operating in the beer industry, Ursus, Heineken, InBev and URBB, last year generated cumulated net income worth 100m euros, 140% higher than the level reached in 2005, of only 41.3m euros, according to the companies published on the Finance Ministry website, Ziarul Financiar (ZF) said on August 22nd.

The most profitable brewer was Ursus Breweries, the domestic unit of SABMiller, producer of Ursus and Timisoreana brands, according to Finance Ministry data. In the past five years, Ursus has constantly doubled its profit, from a net income of 2m euros in 2002 to 35.1m euros at the end of last year. Ursus in 2006 generated net turnover of 188.

3m euros, up 18% year-on-year, thus leaving behind the former leader of the domestic beer market, Heineken Romania, according to the data published by companies on the Finance Ministry's website. Contacted by ZF, Dieter Schulze, Ursus Breweries chairman, stated he could not comment on his rivals' financial results.

Heineken Romania in 2006 reached 166.9m-euro net turnover, up 5% from 2005. Instead, Heineken last year boasted the biggest income increase among the four domestic subsidiaries of multinationals, with profit hitting 26.8m euros, 7 times higher than in 2005.

USA: Organic beer still represents less than 1 percent of U.S. beer sales, but those sales are booming

Domestic sales of organic food and drink grew from $1 billion in 1990 to $14 billion in 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Organic beer still represents less than 1 percent of U.S. beer sales, but those sales doubled to $19 million between 2003 and 2005 (the last year with available figures), according to the Organic Trade Association, azcentral.com communicated on August 21st. In 2005, organic beer ranked with coffee as the fastest-growing organic beverage.

At Butte Creek Brewing Co. of Chico, Calif., whose product line is almost entirely organic, first quarter 2007 sales were up 60 percent over last year. And organic beer, brewing professionals say, has shed its associations with a hippie fringe.

"Originally people thought, Organic beer? What's that? Why would you want that?' but not anymore," says Scott Burchell, Butte Creek's director of sales. "The organic beer industry is booming."

Hops hunt

USDA standards for organic beer are the same as those for organic foods: ingredients must be grown without toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, in soil free from chemicals for at least three years, and no genetically modified ingredients can be used in brewing.

Organic beer began appearing on store shelves in the late 1990s. Butte Creek ...

India: Asia Pacific Breweries set to buy out a stake in Aurangabad Breweries

The Heineken arm, Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), is set to buy out the local partner Vijay Chowgule’s stake in its Indian venture, Aurangabad Breweries Ltd (AUBL), Economic India Times cited on August 18th different sources saying. The Goa-based Chowgule family holds 24% stake in AUBL, makers of Cannon and Arlem beers, after the Singapore-based APB acquired majority stake in a deal valued at $18 million more than a year back.

Sources said APB was in final stages of talks to buy out Chowgule’s stake completely, but deal was not yet done. Vivek Chhabra, who is spearheading APB’s India business development, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. Sources said the residual stake transaction may involve around $3-4 million but this could not be independently confirmed.

Chowgule family through AUBL controlled two breweries in Maharashtra and in Goa and was one of the prominent independent brewers before consolidation swamped the beer industry in India. Cannon, a strong beer, has a significant presence in Maharashtra with annualised depletion of 1.6 million cases. The acquisition of 76% in AUBL marked APB’s foray into India. The brewer, in which is Heineken is a major shareholder, is currently upgrading the Aurangabad brewery before bringing in ...

Turkey: The alcoholic beverage market has grown by 35% in H1 2007 thanks to an increase in beer consumption

The Turkish alcoholic beverage market, despite a 9 percent decline in 2006, has grown by 35 percent in the first six months of 2007 thanks to an increase in beer consumption, The Turkish Daily News posted on August 22nd.

The alcoholic beverage sector saw a growth of 35 percent in the first six months of 2007, the Outdoor Consumption Panel conducted by Ipsos KMG in Istanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Bursa and Adana has found.

Beer, a crucial part of the alcoholic beverage market, loomed large as the group that experienced the most significant growth,” noted Burduroğlu.

Vodka consumption rose by 41 percent, compared to last year, and ranked first in total alcoholic beverage consumption in the first six months of 2007. Beer, which retains 82 percent of the market, followed with a growth rate of 37 percent, while whiskey ranked third with a 35 percent consumption rate. Ukraine: ABB Grain and Soufflet to form joint venture in Ukraine

Premier, integrated Australian agribusiness, ABB Grain, has signed an historic agreement with agro-industrial group, Soufflet, to establish a joint venture company in the Ukraine, ABB Grain communicated on August 20th.

Russia: At least 3 – 400,000 t of malting barley must be imported in the new crop year

Russia exported 1.418 million tonnes of feed barley during the last crop year. Russian analysts Interargo estimate the new barley crop only at 16.0 million tonnes, of which 14.0 million tonnes of spring barley vs. 16.4 million tonnes last year.

Russian barley imports, mainly malting barley, were 264,000 tonnes in 2006/07. Although harvest is far from finished, forecasts are that at least 3 – 400,000 tonnes of malting barley must be imported in the new crop year.

Germany: Barley crop 2007 is estimated lower yoy due to the heat and drought in April and the rain during the harvest time

Germany's leading trading house Toepfer International forecasted on Monday, August 20th a barley harvest 2007 of 10.5 to 10.8Mt from 12Mt last year.

Wheat - 20Mt, down from the 22.4Mt harvested last year. This confirms previous trade and official estimates.
Rye - Greater planted area meant the rye crop was forecast to increase over 3Mt from 2.6Mt last year.
Maize - 3.4 to 3.5Mt from 3.2Mt last year.
Triticale - 2 to 2.1Mt against 2.2Mt last year.
Rapeseed - 5.2 to 5.3Mt against 5.3Mt last year.

This gave an overall cereal harvest of 40M to 41Mt from 43.3Mt last year. The trading house Toepfer International said that the main reasons for the decline in the forecasts is the heat and drought in April and the rain during the harvest time that interrupted the harvest repeatedly.
