Brewery News
Belgium: InBev to invest 60 mil euros over next 12 months in Belgian brewing operations

InBev said it is to invest 60 mil euros over the next 12 months to step up production for its Belgian brewing operations located in Hoegaarden, Liege-Jupille and Leuven, AFX News Limited reported September 10.

The group said it is making the investment following the "international success" of brands Stella Artois and Hoegaarden, as well as the growth of Jupiler in Belgium and the Netherlands.

InBev's Belgian operations, employing over 3000 staff, has four centers of production in Leuven, Liege-Jupille, Hoegaarden and Brussels, eight distribution centers and a portfolio of brands -- Jupiler, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, Leffe and Belle-Vue.

Netherlands: Grolsch H1 net profit up by 17%

Royal Grolsch NV said it expects full-year net profit, excluding one-off items, to grow by 10 pct as it recorded a 17 pct rise in its net result in the first six months of the year, AFX News Limited reported September 11.

Sales for the first half were 164.1 mln eur, up from 152.2 mln in the same period last year.

EBITDA was 26.8 mln compared with 26.3 mln last year, while net profit was 7.6 mln eur compared with 6.5 mln in the same period in 2006.

Grolsch said its distribution partnership with Anheuser-Busch (nyse: BUD - news - people ) led to more than 50 pct volume growth in the US in the first half and it guided for more than 40 pct full-year growth.

In the UK -- where Grolsch's market share is under pressure -- the company said it recorded virtually stable volumes, adding that a marketing campaign is helping to stabilise the Grolsch brand.

International volumes grew overall by 8 pct in the first half.

The Dutch brewer also said the introduction of its 330 ml bottle led to volume growth in the Netherlands and a larger market share and added that it expects to match this performance in ...

Canada: Brick Brewing reports lower 2nd quarter earnings due to higher taxes and costs

Brick Brewing Co. Limited announced its financial results for the second quarter and six months ended
July 31, 2007, in a press release, September 11.

The results of the second quarter of fiscal 2007 for Brick Brewing produced earnings of $283 thousand, compared with a profit of $962 thousand, in the fiscal 2006 second quarter. This reduced profitability was the result of significant incremental production taxes, higher variable costs associated with commodity input cost inflation and reduced volumes when compared to last year.

Gross revenues in the second quarter decreased by 6.8% to $22.0 million compared with $23.6 million in the previous year. On a net basis - after deduction of distribution fees and production taxes - revenues were $9.6 million, compared with $11.3 million last year. This decrease in net revenue, despite a 3.6% increase in the Company's per unit selling price was largely attributable to an 11% decline in total beer volume. Volume sold at The Beer Store (TBS), the industry's dominant distribution organization, declined 12% while volumes sold to LCBO outlets increased 16%.

"The contradictory sales patterns for our brands at the LCBO stores compared to TBS stores are highly instructive," ...

Peru: Beer consumption increases while beer prices decrease

One of Peru's leading beer companies, AmBev Peru, anticipates that the production of beer will increase by 15 percent in Peru, LIP reported September 6.

AmBev Peru, producer of Brahma beer, also predicted that 10 million 400 thousand hectoliters of beer would be consumed by customers this year, meaning that there will be an average consumption of 34 liters per person.

The increase in consumption has been attributed to the fact that there is now more competition on the beer market because of the increase in brands. Last week, Aje company introduced a new beer to Peru, Franca.

It has also been foreseen that due to competition, by the end of the year, beer prices will have decreased by 10 percent when compared to 2006.

The offers Cristal beer currently has are three 650 ml bottles for 9 soles and 50 cents, while Brahma is selling four 650 ml bottles for 9 soles and 50 cents. Franca has entered the market selling three 700 ml bottles for 8 soles.

"We sacrifice a margin of profit but we recover it when we sell larger quantities," stated Manuel Rangel, Marketing manager for AmBev Peru.

South Korea: Summer heat lifts beer sales to record high

Beer sales in South Korea is expected to hit a record high this year thanks to the unusually hot summer and revived consumer spending, according to industry sources, Korea Times reported September 9.

Hite Brewery, the country's largest beer maker, moved 13.21 million boxes of beer (500ml X 20 bottles) out of its warehouses in August, the largest delivery in a single month, according to the Korea Alcohol & Liquor Industry Association (KALIA).

OB Brewery, the runner-up company, also sold 9.09 million boxes to wholesalers and retailers in the last month, though it fell short of the record-high of 9.69 million boxes in June 2002, when the country hosted the FIFA World Cup football tournament.

Boosted by Hite's strong performance, the combined monthly volume of beer delivery by the local manufacturers reached 22.3 million boxes in August, breaking the former record of 21.42 boxes set in June 2002 thanks to the World Cup fever.

Accordingly, the accumulated beer delivery from January to August also increased to 140.91 million boxes, up 6.8 percent from the same period last year, also breaking the record of 139.88 boxes in the first eight months of 2002.

Beer makers ascribed the increased sales largely to the increasing consumer spending and ...

Botswana: KBL named best brewer in Africa, Asia

The Botswana brewing giant, Kgalagadi Breweries (Pty) Ltd (KBL) has been crowned SAB-Miller Africa and Asia brewery of the year after beating nine others including, Zambia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and India, according to The Reporter, September 10.

The award was presented to the KBL technical team in Sun City, South Africa, on 31 August 2007. According to KBL officials, the award is given to the brewery that displays high adherence to the Manufacturing Performance Index (MPI) scorecard.

The group Managing Director, Hloni Matsela said that the brewery of the year award was a welcome addition to the long list of KBL achievements.

He saluted all employees of KBL for creating a truly world class business which sets a benchmark for the rest of Africa, Asia and the better part of SAB-Miller businesses. Commenting on the latest success, the incoming technical director, Reginald Phoi said KBL's achievements are a clear indication that he joins a very strong team that settles for nothing but the best and expressed confidence in the technical team as a whole. Barley News
World: The difference between last and this year’s malting barley crops

The difference between last and this year’s barley crops is: there are only few problems of pre-germination and diseases, but high protein and smaller yields and plumpness are cutting supplies, market analysts commented on September 3rd.

As farmers seem to withhold malting barley from markets, there is an apparent insufficient cover for the industry at the moment. Reports are that 50,000 tons of South American barley are afloat to the EU to relieve the supply situation.

Australia: $6 mil in payments headed for malting barley pool growers

ABB Grain has finalised its 2005/2006 malting barley pool in South Australia and Victoria with a final grower return of $221.93/tonne, or nearly $30/tonne more than the pool return estimate during harvest 2005, according to ABB’s press release, September 11.

More than $6m in payments will be heading to growers from September 13.

Growers who chose the traditional pool option will receive a final payment of $12.93/t while growers who chose the extended pool option will receive a final payment of $8.93/t from the same date.

ABB managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said the final gross return for the malting pool of $221.93/t represented a significant increase on the estimate back in December 2005 of $193/t.

“The additional nearly $30/t above harvest prices highlights the upside growers can experience when they support a well-managed pool,” Mr Iwaniw said.

“This compares more than favourably with 2005/06 cash prices that in many situations were only on offer for a short amount of time and, in any case, normally aren’t available to growers who reap their grain later in harvest.”

“Once again we’ve seen the pools, when managed for the benefit of the participants, deliver a solid return for malting barley growers.

“During periods of strong supply ...

UK: UK barley harvest progress

The spring barley harvest is around 75% complete (90% in England and Wales), with yields around average, HGCA has recently reported. Winter barley yields are also lower, but still around the 6-year average, however quality is reportedly better-than-expected. The lower yields suggest reduced availability in 2007/08.

In the latest review of the 2006/07 balance sheets by Defra, barley ending stocks were 22,000t lower at 0.78Mt, 9% below last season. This followed an increase in both home disposals and exports.

Denmark&Sweden&Finland: Spring barley quality considered normal to very good

Denmark finished barley harvest now about 5 days ago together with south Sweden, according to H.Abildstrom & CoApS, September 10. Mid Sweden also benefited from a dry sunny spell and now about 10% to cut. Finland came a long way into the crops over the last 2 weeks and about 75% finished.

Quality of spring barley generally considered normal to very good in all 3 countries:

Denmark: kg/hl 63 protein 10.2 – 11.8 full barley 90
South Sweden - 65 protein 10.2 - 11.5 full barley 91
Mid Sweden - 64 protein 9.5 - 11.8 full barley 90
Finland - 66 protein 10.5 - 12.3 full barley 90

In every region the varieties are showing big differences. Sebastian f. inst is showing good yields but high protein. Prestige in Sweden is coming out with excellent parameters and will be available with max 10.5% protein –if the Swedes keep it separate) Yields are down in Denmark by 1-1 ton/ha whereas in Sweden and Finland farmers were surprised to find yields around normal or better.

Hops News
World: 2007 Hop Market Expectations

Since the Hop Market Telegram in May market conditions have not changed significantly, Joh. Barth & Sohn GmbH & Co KG reported in its last Hop Market Telegram of August. “With crop expectations as reported above, the worldwide α deficit is estimated to be in the range of 500- 700 mt of alpha. Therefore, the market will be extremely tight. We expect a slow start of the spot market as grower expectations are likely to exceed customer offers initially. It is also to be expected that growers will want to leverage their available spot hops with forward contracts well into the future. In

Germany, the HVG has opened their usual pool with down payments of 6,50 €/kg for Magnum and 7,00 €/kg for Taurus and Herkules and down payments on aroma varieties ranging between 4,50 and 5,00 €/kg, 7,50 €/kg for Tettnanger and was followed by other traders with similar conditions. It will be seen, however, whether pools will retain their attractiveness to growers under current market conditions.

Product Processing and Deliveries

It will take 10 to 11 months to process and package the entire US crop 2007 into customer ready products. That means that the hop industry can only process ...

Determination of Ochratoxin A in Beer

LUBOMÍR DAŠKO, ELENA BELAJOVÁ, DRAHOMÍRA RAUOVÁ and MILAN KOVÁÈ
Food Research Institute, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

DESCRIPTION: DAŠKO L., BELAJOVÁ E., RAUOVÁ D., KOVÁÈ M. (2005): Determination of ochratoxin A in beer. Czech J. Food Sci., 23: 69–73.

Ochratoxin A is a very common mycotoxin which can be found rather often, predominantly in various cereal materials and in products from this type of plants. Our aim was to apply an analytical procedure with a suitable detection level of ochratoxin A for its estimation in beer. The detection level of the method suggested was close to 0.001 µg/kg. The analytical procedure is based on HPLC separation with fluorescence detection. The application of this method is demonstrated and analytical results obtained with beer of domestic provenience are reported.
