Brewery News
Japan: Beer, beer-like drink shipments up 1.2% in August 2007

Shipments of beer and quasi-beer beverages in Japan posted year-on-year growth for the second straight month in August thanks to a summer heat wave, JCN reported September 12.

Overall shipments increased 1.2 pct from a year earlier to 49,772,000 cases, but the pace of growth was relatively small as Japan also had a very hot summer last year. Each case contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

The so-called third-segment beverages with little or no malt content jumped 9.3 pct to 9,451,000 cases, posting a record for August and the fourth straight increase.

Beer shipments declined 0.2 pct to 28,867,000 cases, the first fall in two months.

Shipments of "happoshu" low-malt quasi-beer beverages dropped 1.2 pct to 11,454,000 cases, down for the fourth consecutive month.

Among major brewers, Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Suntory Ltd. posted rises, while Kirin Brewery Co. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd. logged small falls.

UK: Scottish & Newcastle dips as Merrill says no imminent Carlsberg bid

Shares in Britain's biggest brewer, Scottish & Newcastle Plc (S&N), dipped as broker Merrill Lynch said a long-rumoured takeover bid from Danish rival Carlsberg was not imminent, Reuters reported September 13.

Merrill's message came after Carlsberg's Chief Financial Officer and deputy Chief Executive Jorn Jensen met investors last week in New York and sought to play down bid talk at the same time as other Carlsberg senior figures hinted at a deal.

"Our interpretation of the CFO/deputy CEO's comments are that the new management team will focus on unlocking organic value opportunities, and that a bid for S&N is not imminent," said analyst Nico Lambrechts at Merrill in a note.

Merrill had said in June the combination looked inevitable.

S&N shares were off 1.1 percent at 607-1/2 pence by 0915 GMT valuing the Foster's and Kronenbourg brewer at 5.7 billion pounds ($11.6 billion), after earlier falling 3.3 percent to 594-1/2p. Carlsberg was down 1 percent at 711 Danish crowns.

Merrill said Jensen told investors last week that changes to the Carlsberg Foundation statutes, which had prompted fevered talk of a Carlsberg-S&N combination in April, had nothing to do with a potential S&N acquisition.

But Jensen's words came in the same week that outgoing Carlsberg Chief Executive ...

Belgium: Beer price may rise again

It is possible to see an increasing price for beer again, Het Belang van Limburg journal reported, according to RTL, September 14. The cause is the rising price of raw materials. Alken-Maes has already increased the price of barrel and beer box by 2.5%. InBev and Primus are still waiting. “But next year we will certainly not have other choice than to increase the price too”, Olav Blancquaert, Suvel Moortgat sales manager said.

“Before the summer we have already increased the price of beer box by 2.5%”, Katrien Adriaens from d’Alken-Maes said. The costs continued to rise and from September 2, we have been obliged to increase the beer price too.” InBev and Primus have not yet decided over a rise. “But we are evaluating the situation continuously”, InBev said.

India: Carlsberg eying stake in Parag Breweries

Beer giant Carlsberg is making rapid moves in India. The Copenhagen-based brewer is set to acquire 60% stake in Parag Breweries located near Kolkata, The India Economic Times posted on September 14. The target brewery, which is still under development, will have an initial capacity to produce around 1.5-2 lakh cases of beer monthly, sources said.

Carlsberg, through its local arm South Asia Breweries, is picking up stake in Parag as well as its holding entity Agnes Impex, both of whom will be merged subsequently. Carlsberg will hold about 60% stake post consolidation. The acquisition cost will be roughly Rs 32 crore, sources added. When contacted, the promoter of Parag Breweries Parag Mitra said, “I am surprised by the news your are breaking to me.”

This acquisition would be Carlsberg’s second in India in the last 12 months. Earlier, it acquired Himneel Breweries in Himachal Pradesh from its creditors IFCI and Dena Bank for roughly Rs 36 crore. Carlsberg, makers of the eponymous global beer, is also setting up two greenfield breweries at Alwar in Rajasthan and at Aurangabad in Maharashtra with an investment of Rs 85 core.

Carlsberg and its Sri Lankan partner Lion Group are the two major ...

Latvia: Beer sales steady

In the first eight month of 2007, Latvian breweries sold 98.536 mil litres of beer, 1.9% less than in the same period of 2006, Russian Beer Union reported September 12.

“Sales volume is steady, and is not due to price increase but to weather conditions”, Peteris Lininsh, Latvian Beer Union Executive Director, said.

As usual the market leader is Aldaris brewery, with 42.97% or 42.344 mil litres. Beer sales increased 6.6% and market share – 3.25% in 2007.

Second placed is Cēsu alus brewery, with 22.035 mil liters in sales, 16.6% more than in the first eight month of 2006. Third is placed Līvu alus with 12.155 mil litres.

Other sales volumes for first 8 month of 2007 are: Lāčplēša alus (4.884 mil litres), Mamas D (4.472), Bauskas alus (3.459), Tērvete (3.102), Piebalgas alus (2.496), Alus nams (1.261).

Japan: Japanese brewers concerned about ethanol, biotech impact

Japan beer brewers are concerned about the impact of the ethanol industry and U.S. corn supply on their industry, according to Illinois Farm Bureau, September 14.

Cary Sifferath, U.S. Grains Council senior director in Japan, recently met with the Brewers Association of Japan to discuss the impact of U.S. ethanol production on corn supply and the availability of non-biotech corn.

“Japan’s beer industry is a major end-user of corn products, such as corn starch and corn sweeteners produced by the Japanese corn starch industry from imported U.S. corn,” said Sifferath.

He noted the Japanese beer industry demands starch and sweeteners made from non-biotech corn.

“With 73 percent of planted acres in the United States being biotech, the Japanese beer industry is concerned about current and future supplies of non-GM corn from the United States,” he said.

In addition to discussing the overall U.S. corn supply and demand outlook, he shared an overview of the U.S. fuel ethanol industry and outlook for U.S. non-biotech corn production.

The brewers realize the U.S. will continue to be a major corn producer, but remain worried about prices for U.S. corn and future costs of non-biotech corn, according to Sifferath.

Japan, the largest U.S. corn customer, has imported 1.6 million metric tons, ...

UK: Beer market in decline

The beer market is in decline in the UK as Britons turn their back on what is, these days, often seen as an unhealthy and downmarket drink, Scotsman reported September 3. The trend has not been helped by a host of factors this year, as the recent round of brewing figures has revealed.

Not least, there is the dreadful summer weather that has dampened customers' thirst for beer.

Foster's and Kronenbourg brewer Scottish & Newcastle has also warned it may not meet full-year targets as demand waned amid the lashing rain seen in June and July. But the group noted that the smoking ban introduced across the UK since last March was adding to the weather-related trading problems, predicting the legislation could knock the entire UK beer market by up to 2 per cent.

Many brewers were hoping the ban - which came into effect in Scotland in March 2006 followed by Wales, Northern Ireland and finally England on 1 July - would be felt less in the summer, with drinking outside pubs expected to hold up in the sunny weather. The rain, however, emptied pub gardens.

Then there are the tough comparatives for beer firms to beat, driven by ...

Barley News
Australia: USDA forecasts 1 mil tonnes cut in Australian barley production

The USDA forecasts a cut in Australian barley production of one million tonnes because of the dry weather, according to Australasian Investment Review, September 13. Much of barley is grown in South Australia where dry weather hit 10 days ago and has continued off and on. Parts of Western Australia have also been very dry in the past month, hence the reductions in estimates.

Australia barley production is cut 1.0 million tons reflecting dry conditions that are expected to have an even greater impact on barley than wheat because of its earlier maturity.

China: Demand for malting barley in 2008 will be 4.5 million tonnes

China’s barley imports lag miles behind normal figures and will probably not even reach 1 million tonnes this year, analysts commented on September 2. China’s barley crop is 3.5 million tonnes, of which an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of malting barley. Beer and malt production increase continuously. Demand for malting barley in 2008 will be 4.5 million tonnes.

Malting barley production in Inner Mongolia, 400,000 tonnes this year, is considered a major domestic source for the future. Farmers in Heilongjiang, though, were disillusioned and dropped barley growing, from a crop of 300 to 150,000 tonnes.

Australia: Feed and Malting Barley situation by the end of August

Australia’s barley fields are badly stressed only in parts of the country, but rains are now required urgently, as spring starts and temperatures rise, analysts commented on September 3rd. Australia is losing meat export markets to North America, which could possibly cut the domestic feed barley demand from 1,5 to 0,5 Mill. tons. Present new crop price levels FOB seaports are US$ 320,- for feed, 330,- for malting barley, US$ 410,-/420,- for malting barley CIF China.

Hops News
World: 2007 Hop Market Expectations

Since the Hop Market Telegram in May market conditions have not changed significantly, Joh. Barth & Sohn GmbH & Co KG reported in its last Hop Market Telegram of August. “With crop expectations as reported above, the worldwide α deficit is estimated to be in the range of 500- 700 mt of alpha. Therefore, the market will be extremely tight. We expect a slow start of the spot market as grower expectations are likely to exceed customer offers initially. It is also to be expected that growers will want to leverage their available spot hops with forward contracts well into the future. In

Germany, the HVG has opened their usual pool with down payments of 6,50 €/kg for Magnum and 7,00 €/kg for Taurus and Herkules and down payments on aroma varieties ranging between 4,50 and 5,00 €/kg, 7,50 €/kg for Tettnanger and was followed by other traders with similar conditions. It will be seen, however, whether pools will retain their attractiveness to growers under current market conditions.

Product Processing and Deliveries

It will take 10 to 11 months to process and package the entire US crop 2007 into customer ready products. That means that the hop industry can only process ...

Determination of Ochratoxin A in Beer

LUBOMÍR DAŠKO, ELENA BELAJOVÁ, DRAHOMÍRA RAUOVÁ and MILAN KOVÁÈ
Food Research Institute, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

DESCRIPTION: DAŠKO L., BELAJOVÁ E., RAUOVÁ D., KOVÁÈ M. (2005): Determination of ochratoxin A in beer. Czech J. Food Sci., 23: 69–73.

Ochratoxin A is a very common mycotoxin which can be found rather often, predominantly in various cereal materials and in products from this type of plants. Our aim was to apply an analytical procedure with a suitable detection level of ochratoxin A for its estimation in beer. The detection level of the method suggested was close to 0.001 µg/kg. The analytical procedure is based on HPLC separation with fluorescence detection. The application of this method is demonstrated and analytical results obtained with beer of domestic provenience are reported.
