Vietnam: Carlsberg enters into a joint venture to build a brewery in Southern Vietnam

Carlsberg has entered into a joint venture with state-owned Hanoi Beer & Beverage Corporation (Habeco) to build a brewery in Southern Vietnam, according to Carlsberg’s press release, September 18. Carlsberg and Habeco will hold each 29%, and other external investors will hold the balance.

Earlier this year, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry approved Habeco's choice of Carlsberg as the strategic foreign investor to Habeco in connection with the upcoming privatization of Habeco, and the new cooperation in Southern Vietnam further strengthens this strategic alliance between Carlsberg and Habeco.

The Joint Venture will have a strong brand portfolio consisting of the Carlsberg brand, one of the leading premium beer brands in Vietnam, as well as Habeco's famous Hanoi Beer, the leading beer brand in Northern Vietnam.

The name of the joint venture will be Hanoi Vung Tau Joint Stock Company. The Joint Venture brewery will be located in Vung Tau province, approximately 50 km outside Ho Chi Minh City ("Saigon"). Vung Tau is one of the fastest growing provinces in Vietnam due to among others the presence of large off-shore oil fields. The brewery will have an initial capacity of 500,000 hl.

China: Yanjing Brewery foresees 30% growth in 2007

Yanjing Brewery Co Ltd, Tsingtao Brewery's main domestic rival, expects to post net profit growth in excess of 30 percent in 2007 as it rides robust consumption ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Reuters reported September 18.

President Li Fucheng told reporters on Tuesday the firm, which competes in China with Tsingtao and local champions SABMiller Plc and China Resources Enterprises, should sell 4 million tonnes of beer in 2007 versus 3.53 million tonnes last year.

Volume sales should then rise gradually to 4.5 million tonnes and 5.0 million tonnes in 2008 and 2009, respectively, Li said.

"To reach this target, we plan to add 13 production lines to expand our capacity," he added.

"Driven by the Olympics, sales volume and prices of mid-to- high-end products have shot up."

Yanjing's net profit rose 11 percent to 306.9 million yuan ($40.8 million) in 2006. It posted a net profit of 193 million yuan in the January to June period of 2007, up 25 percent.

The firm dominates its home market and the northern region of Inner Mongolia, but also maintains a presence in southern Guangdong, Guangxi and central Hubei.

Czech Republic: SABMiller's Plzensky Prazdroj to hike beer prices 6-8% due to rising costs

SABMiller PLC's Czech brewing subsidiary Plzensky Prazdroj said it is planning to increase prices by 6-8 pct later this year due to rocketing raw ingredient costs, AFX News Limited reported September 14.

In a press release, the brewer of the Pilsner Urquell and Gambrinus brands said, the current price per ton of malting barley in the Czech Republic -- a key brewing ingredient -- is approaching double last year's price.

The division of SABMiller, which produces more than 10.7 mln hectolitres of beer a year (including licensed production abroad), said the "extraordinary situation" is forcing it to bring forward its 2008 price increases, with price increases of 6-8 pct most likely to come in November and impact on all the company's brands.

Plzensky Prazdroj added there remains the prospect of further price increases in 2008 should commodity prices continue their rapid rise.

"We have thoroughly considered all the options but the situation is unsustainable," said Plzensky Prazdroj managing director Mike Short. "To maintain current beer prices, any brewer would have to compromise quality. I would be shocked if the current situation in raw materials doesn't have a similar impact on beer prices right across Europe."

Russia: Scandal with filling Heineken's bottles with drinks made by another company in Krasnoyarsk Territory

Dutch brewery Heineken complained of Zelenogorsk Near-Beer Plant to Krasnoyarsk Directorate for the Federal Antitrust Service (DFAS), NewsLab reported September 18. The foreign brewery says that Heineken bottles are used in Zelenogorsk to sell local drinks without the company's knowledge. The company says "Zhigulevskoe" beer is sold in glass bottles with "Under Heineken Russia Control" inscription.

Heineken believes that Zelenogorsk plant uses the company's bottles collected at the receiving point of glass containers. The antitrust service has already initiated a case over violation of Federal law No. 14 "About protection of competition". However, the first trial appointed on September 18 was postponed due to lack of information.

The next trial has not been appointed yet. In case Zelenogorsk plant is proved guilty, it faces a fine of 15 percent of the turnover, Oleg Kharchenko, DFAS head, told KNews.

Belgium: Duvel announces 17.6% rise in after taxes income for H1 2007

Duvel announces its financial results for the first half of 2007, in a press release, September 7.The consolidated turnover rises by 20.6% compared to the first six months of 2006. These results include those of Brasserie d’Achouffe, which are consolidated since September 2006. Excluding Brasserie d’Achouffe, the organic growth amounts to 12.2%. The after-tax income rises by 17.6% compared to the same period in 2006, including Brasserie d’Achouffe. The growth without taking into account Brasserie d’Achouffe amounts to 10.4%.

ACTIVITY REPORT

In the first six months of 2007, Duvel Moortgat globally presents stronger figures, both for the various brands and for the markets in which the brewery is active. Brand turnover Duvel’s turnover rises by 7.5%. The abbey beers of Maredsous rise by 18%, Bel Pils by 12%. Vedett realised an increase in turnover of 44%. Abroad, the Czech Bernard beers achieved excellent results, showing an increase in turnover of 11%. The turnover of the Ommegang Brewery beers rises by 43%. Turnover of the Chouffe beers, which have been part of the group since September 2006, rises by 40%.

Australia: Barley production in 2007-08 recorded a significant increase from 2006-07 but well below earlier estimates as per ABARE

Australia’s barley production in 2007-08 is forecast by ABARE (Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics) to reach around 5.9 million tonnes, as per Australian Crop Report of September 2007. Although this is a significant increase from production in 2006-07, it is well below ABARE’s June estimates.

New South Wales

The area planted to barley is estimated to have increased by 12 per cent in 2007-08, to around 1 million hectares. Despite below average winter rainfall, yields are forecast to be above 2006-07 levels. Barley production is forecast to increase by around 460 000 tonnes in 2007-08, to just over 1 million tonnes.

Victoria

The area planted to barley in Victoria in 2007-08 is estimated at 920 000 hectares, an 8 per cent increase from 2006-07. Production is forecast to rise to around 1.6 million tonnes, more than three times that produced in 2006-07, refl ecting the increased area sown and average to below average yields.

Queensland

The area planted to barley is estimated to have fallen marginally in 2007-08, to 89 000 hectares, primarily refl ecting a reduction in sowings on the Darling Downs, one of the State’s major barley growing regions, because of the poor start to the season. Despite the drop ... More Info

Canada: Barley production in 2007-08 is estimated by AAFC to increase by 24% close to the 10-year average

Barley production in 2007-08 is estimated by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canda (AAFC) to increase by 24% to 11.8 Mt, close to the 10-year average, due tohigher seeded area. However, supply is expected to only increase slightly due to significantly lower carry-in stocks.

Exports are forecast to rise sharply, while domestic use is expected to decrease slightly. Carry-out stocks are projected to decrease marginally. The average off- Board feed barley price (No.1 CW I/S Lethbridge) is forecast to increase from 2006-07 due to strong export demand.

Total production of grains and oilseeds (G&O) in Canada in 2007-08 is estimated at about 61 million tonnes (Mt), slightly lower than 2006-07 and slightly above the 10-year average. Yields for most crops are estimated to be near average despite the hot and dry weather in western and eastern Canada in July. Harvest is well underway and nearly complete in some regions. The quality of all crops is expected to be near average with a better than normal grade distribution. UK: Barley grower facing the question: “When to sell”

There are still odd pockets of grain to be combined in Scotland, but the vast bulk of the harvest is over, Business Scotsman reported September 18.

The question now facing those farmers who have not sold their entire crop on forward contracts is the tricky one of when to hit the market. Spot malting barley of the highest quality is touching £200 per tonne, which is a record level and way above the £80 per tonne similar barley was making last September.

The malting trade appears desperate to buy barley and the general advice is certainly not to sell too quickly, though anything in the £180-£200 per tonne range has to be considered attractive. These unprecedented values for barley will eventually have to be reflected by distillers and brewers in what they charge for their drinks.

Meanwhile, next week the European Commission is expected to approve the abolition of compulsory set-aside. It is estimated that 3.8 million hectares is currently in set-aside throughout the EU, with 900,000 hectares, mostly in France and Germany, used for non-food crops. USA: Barley markets continue to skyrocket

In trying to describe the latest activity in the barley markets, Randy Brag from the Valley Grain Services in Casselton, N.D., said he is almost speechless, according to Farm & Ranch Guide, September 16.

“We are well into record high prices for both feed and malting barley and, as Brag puts it, “No one can really predict what's going to happen next. This is no man's land.”

“Prices could go up a dollar so fast or we could drop a dollar just as fast. This is as speculative as I have ever seen barley,” he continued. “Barley normally moves a nickel every once in a while, but nothing like this. To a lot of us right now this market makes no sense.”

The export market for good feed barley seems to be driving the markets at this time, Brag noted. He pointed out that a lot of factors are coming together at the same time to give support to the market.

Czech Republic: Hop production down in 2007

The 2007 hop harvest in the Czech Republic is approaching its end. Saaz variety is now completely harvested, the Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic posted in its Czech Hop Report of September 5th 2007. They said: “Although the final official results of the harvest will not be available until the end of November we estimate that due to unfavourable climatic conditions, especially very hot and also dry weather, during the vegetation period the crop results will be under long-term average. The yields of the main SAAZ hop variety were down at least 20 % compare to long-term average and down also compare to what was expected before the harvest started. The alpha content of the Saaz variety is on average under 3 %.

The harvest of the other Czech varieties should be finished next week. We expect an average crop of these varieties with an average alpha content.

With improvements in microscopes early in the nineteenth century, yeasts were seen to be living organisms, although some famous scientists ridiculed the idea and their influence held back the development of microbiology. In the 1850s and 1860s, yeasts were established as microbes and responsible for alcoholic fermentation, and this led to the study of the ro? le of bacteria in lactic and other fermentations, as well as bacterial pathogenicity. At this time, there were difficulties in distinguishing between the activities of microbes and of extracellular enzymes. Between 1884 and 1894, Emil Fischer’s study of sugar utilization by yeasts generated an understanding of enzymic specificity and the nature of enzyme–substrate complexes.

Just weeks later, most regions of the world are tilting toward recession.
