Brewery News
Australia: Lion Nathan says premium beers growing

Lion Nathan Ltd, Australia's second-largest brewer, said premium and mid-strength beer volumes were continuing to outperform mainstream beers, according to Reuters, September 20.

Volume growth for traditional, mainstream beers has also steadied.

"In the last 12 months generally, it has been more stable than it has been in the last number of years," Reeves said.

"Boutique" and mid-strength beers have been steadily gaining share in Australia's A$5.5 billion ($4.7 billion) beer market, posting 12 percent annual sales growth compared with 6 percent for mainstream beers, according to recent industry figures.

Lion Nathan's beer brands include Tooheys, Tooheys New, Hahn Premium and Hahn Premium Light, Becks and Heineken. It also has a smaller wine business, with brands including Petaluma and Banksia.

Hundreds of small "boutique" or craft breweries with names like Little Creatures and Blue Tongue are aiming to rival small European makers, turning Australians away from traditional lagers and on to more complex beer styles.

Reeves said consumers are enjoying greatly expanded choice in beer, citing industry figures that brands have grown from 500 a few years ago to close to 900 now.

The trend towards premium beers has also been underpinning profits for Lion Nathan and larger rival Fosters Group Ltd , since the premium brands ...

China: Chinese Snow Beer on course to be World's second biggest beer, behind Budweiser

Snow, the Chinese beer brand partly owned by London-based brewer SABMiller, is set to become the number-two beer brand in the world this year, SABMiller said, citing industry data, according to The Associated Press, September 20.

Snow is the main national brand of CR Snow Breweries, SABMiller's 49 percent-owned joint venture with China Resources Group Ltd., which became the number-four brand in the world in 2006, with 3 billion liters sold, according to beverage research specialist Canadean. In the first six months of 2007, Snow sold 2.3 billion liters, up 77 percent on the year.

If it maintains this rate of growth, it should easily overtake Belgian beer producer InBev's Skol to become the second largest brand in the world by volume, behind Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc.'s Budweiser. It would also overtake Corona -- owned by Mexico's Grupo Modelo SAB. De C.V. -- which itself is 50 percent-owned by Anheuser-Busch.

Even with no growth in the second half, Snow would still sell 4 billion liters, compared with second-placed Skol's 3.6 billion liters in 2006.

Thanks to SABMiller's share of the Chinese joint venture, there is also a chance SABMiller could surpass InBev as the world's largest brewer, the company said.

Snow is China's leading beer ...

Laos: Lao Brewery delays export plans

Lao Brewery Co's plans to flood Thailand with its popular Beer Lao next year have been put on hold until 2011, a senior executive said, DPA reported September 20. Lao Brewery, one of little Laos' biggest companies, has invested 25 million dollars in an expansion project in southern Laos aimed at exploiting the export market, specifically neighbouring Thailand, under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, which goes into effect in 2008 for the 10-country Association of South-East Asian Nations.

But the government of Laos and Thailand recently decided that beer was too sensitive a product to be tariff-free in their respective markets.

"Both governments decided to keep the tariffs on beer until 2011," said Sounthone Phommachak, senior deputy managing director of the Lao Brewery Co. "Each country is still trying to protect their own beer market."

Lao Brewery, a joint venture between the Lao government and Denmark's Carlberg, is to open a new plant in Pakse in southern Laos at the end of this year with an initial annual capacity for 50 million litres of beer.

The 25-million-dollar project was originally planned to tap the beer market of neighbouring Thailand, but now it is to focus on satisfying the growing local demand ...

Belgium: InBev denies rumors it is to spin off Diebels, Gilde, Loewenbraeu brands

Belgian brewing giant InBev SA denied rumours it plans to divest of its German Diebels, Gilde and Loewenbraeu beer brands, saying that it continues to see them as an important part of its strategy, Thomson Financial reported September 20.

The company said in a statement: "InBev Germany has a successful and attractive portfolio on the German beer market." It added: "The strong and well-known regional brands Gilde, Loewenbraeu and Diebels continue to belong to InBev's current strategy." The brewer said it plans to brew the Beck's brand alongside existing products in all breweries outside Bremen due to high domestic and international demand.

The statement followed reports that employees at the breweries producing Diebels, Gilde and Loewenbraeu are worried that Inbev may decide to sell the breweries in order to focus on its core brands Beck's and Franziskaner.

Bulgaria: Ariana Beer - 9th fastest growing beer in the World

Bulgarian ‘Ariana' beer is in top 10 of world fastest growing trade mark beers, according to the competent Britain research of ‘Plato Logic Limited' company, Bulgarian news reported September 20.

This was informed by ‘Zagorka' brewery, which possesses the beer works in Sofia. We remind you that Zagorka is part of the chain of ‘Heineken' company.

Ariana is the only one Bulgarian beer that is on the British classification for fastest growing beer.

Its growth of 40% for the period 2001-2006, Ariana marks development speed, compatible to beer marks sold on the Russian and Chinese markets.

‘Plato Logic International Groups Datasheets' research concerns 1997-2006 and analyzes data for 22 international brewery companies and their subdivisions.

South Africa: Unusual demand for beer is responsible for shortages

South African Breweries (SAB) says in the quarter to June, volume sales grew 4% and now unusual demand is partly responsible for intermittent shortages, Business Day reported September 21. SA is not known as a high beer per capita country, consuming 55l a person a year. The Czechs, however, down about 160l a year, and the Germans about 125l.

Locally, warmer weather and sporting events may well have contributed to the increase in demand. There has also been the suggestion that drinkers are moving from wine to beer.

Then there is also the absence of rival Amstel during SAB's first quarter, as cans re-entered SA only in July. Bottles, by far the bulk of sales, should be back by the end of the month.

So, did Amstel's absence from SAB's portfolio harm or aid it? The jury is still out, but one market commentator points out that the only premium beers on shelves that were not from SAB from March to June were Heineken and Windhoek.

So, either SAB benefited anyway and its next set of numbers will not show such huge volume growth, or Amstel drinkers all drank either Heineken or Windhoek and the net volume gain is actually higher.

Either way, more ...

Romania: Tuborg summer sales reached 40 mil euros, almost half last year's turnover

United Romanian Breweries Bereprod (URBB), the company that holds the bottling licence for the Tuborg and Carlsberg brands on the Romanian market, saw sales worth 40 million euros over the summer period, almost half last year's turnover, Ziarul Financiar published September 21. The company posted a 34% increase in beer sales between June and August this year, as compared with last summer.

"Approximately 82% of our sales for this period were registered in urban areas. Bucharest by far leads the ranking of the top beer selling areas, accounting for 22% of overall sales, followed by Moldova with 14%," Shachar Shaine, president of URBB said, quoting data supplied by the research agency MEMRB.

According to estimates made by the URBB president, the company registered sales worth approximately 8.8 million euros in Bucharest alone.

In terms of the rise in the volume of sales experienced on the seaside during the summer months, Carlsberg registered a 20% increase, Tuborg - 16%, whilst sales volumes for Holsten doubled against the same time last year.

The bulk of sales (71%) were made off-premise, whist just 29% were sold on-premise. "On both the on and off-premise segments, our brands saw a 34% increase against the same time ...

USA: Tightening supplies push barley export sales to triple last year

According to USDA, coarse grain trade hit record levels with 2007/08 numbers increasing by more than 4 million metric tons this month to a record 115 million, Grain Journal published September 14.

“As a result of other countries, specifically the Ukraine, having a poor barley crop this year due to natural calamities, customers are relying on U.S. farmers to fulfill demand,” said President and CEO of the U.S. Grains Council Ken Hobbie.

“Tightening foreign supplies and increasing prices have boosted U.S. barley export sales to triple last year’s level.”

In the past month world barley prices have jumped $80 per ton, which is a 25 percent increase, to a record $350 per ton.

The Ukraine previously accounted for 16 percent of world exports, but due to the poor crop this year export restrictions were imposed to ensure that there are sufficient domestic supplies to soften internal prices.

In addition, Australia, which normally supplies one-third of world exports, is facing lower crop prospects and depleted old crop exportable supplies, according to USDA statistics.

Hobbie said Council programs taking place across the globe helped educate feed mills and other importers of the benefits of U.S. barley as a feed alternative.

For example, the ...

Czech Republic: Hop production down in 2007

The 2007 hop harvest in the Czech Republic is approaching its end. Saaz variety is now completely harvested, the Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic posted in its Czech Hop Report of September 5th 2007. They said: “Although the final official results of the harvest will not be available until the end of November we estimate that due to unfavourable climatic conditions, especially very hot and also dry weather, during the vegetation period the crop results will be under long-term average. The yields of the main SAAZ hop variety were down at least 20 % compare to long-term average and down also compare to what was expected before the harvest started. The alpha content of the Saaz variety is on average under 3 %.

The harvest of the other Czech varieties should be finished next week. We expect an average crop of these varieties with an average alpha content.

At this moment we estimate that the total Czech hop production in 2007 will be around 5100-5300 t (with approx. 4200 t of Saaz variety) which means that it will be very hard to fulfil all commitments. Due to the current crop shortage there has been also some price increase in ...

Beginnings of microbiology and biochemistry: the contribution of yeast research

DESCRIPTION: James A. Barnett School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK

With improvements in microscopes early in the nineteenth century, yeasts were seen to be living organisms, although some famous scientists ridiculed the idea and their influence held back the development of microbiology. In the 1850s and 1860s, yeasts were established as microbes and responsible for alcoholic fermentation, and this led to the study of the ro? le of bacteria in lactic and other fermentations, as well as bacterial pathogenicity. At this time, there were difficulties in distinguishing between the activities of microbes and of extracellular enzymes. Between 1884 and 1894, Emil Fischer’s study of sugar utilization by yeasts generated an understanding of enzymic specificity and the nature of enzyme–substrate complexes.
