UK: SABMiller beer sales boost 11% on South America

SABMiller plc provided an update regarding trading during the six-month period to 30 September 2007, which is the first half of its financial year, in a press release, October 15. The calculation of the organic growth rates included below excludes volumes for acquired businesses for the first 12 months after an acquisition.

As communicated on 24 September 2007 SABMiller has continued its strong start to the year, with organic growth in lager volumes of 11% for the six months ended 30 September 2007. The growth in revenue has been partially offset by higher input costs and increased investment across the business whilst financial performance for the six months remains in line with management’s expectations.

In Latin America, lager volumes rose by 8%. Whilst South America has enjoyed a period of high volume growth during the initial implementation of the group’s plans, this growth has moderated in recent months as expected. In Colombia, lager volumes have grown more than 7% in the half year. Slower growth was recorded in the latter part of the period, off a high base in the prior year. Russia: Court rejects watchdog's suit against Ochakovo Brewery

The Moscow Arbitration Court rejected a suit filed by Russian natural resources watchdog Rosprirodnadzor against Moscow's Ochakovo Brewery regarding environmental violations, the court told Interfax, October 15.

Rosprirodnadzor had asked the court to levy 2.75 million rubles in fines against Ochakovo for environmental damage the watchdog claimed the brewery had caused to a local river.

An Ochakovo spokesman said the brewery did not cause any environmental damages. In addition, the spokesman said Rosprirodnadzor violated instructions in the process of collecting water samples of the alleged violations. The plant's purifying facilities were in working order on July 4, the day when the violations took place, the spokesman said. Ochakovo has agreements in place with an organization that takes water samples and carries out analyses, the spokesman said.

A representative of the Moscow Water Draining Service said at the hearing that Ochakovo was indeed responsible for the pollution. The purifying facilities were not operating at the time, according to a report signed by specialists, including from the brewery, the representative said.

Netherlands: Grolsch signs 140 million Euro revolving credit facility

Royal Grolsch N.V., the Euronext-listed beer brewer with its headquarters in Enschede (The Netherlands), released details of the successful closing of its debut syndicated loan, PRNewswire reported October 16.

The syndicated loan is a EUR 140 million, seven-year revolving credit facility. The proceeds are used for general corporate purposes including the refinancing of existing indebtedness. Moreover, EUR 70 million of the transaction functions as a liquidity backstop facility for the company's inaugural commercial paper-programme.

With this fully committed, unsecured credit facility, Grolsch has successfully diversified its funding strategy to include the money market as well as the bank and equity markets. With this long-term syndicated loan in place, Grolsch benefits from an attractive cost of funding for a considerable period, in a time of rising interest costs and volatility in the financial markets.

Belarus: Krinitsa to launch new bottling line mid October 2007

Belarus’ largest brewery Krinitsa plans to launch a new bottling line by Germany’s KHS on October 15-17, 2007, according to Krinitsa CEO Grigory Petkevich, Agrobel reported October 15.

The new bottling facility has a capacity of 14,000 plastic bottles per hour, he said.

The brewery used Priorbank loans to purchase the equipment. Also, Krinitsa bought Eurowater water treatment facilities.

The ultimate goal of the brewery, which received 10 new tanks by Germany’s Ziemann this August, is to bring the total capacity up to 20 million decaliters annually.

Krynitsa Brewery OJSC was established in January 2001, with a 80.57% share in the statutory capital owned by the state and 19.43% by the company personnel.

The enterprise performed a large-scale modernisation using internal funds and Priorbank loans. As much as 80.57% of the company’s stake was handed over to the country’s largest private bank Priorbank in trust for 5 years.

According to a Priorbank source, as much as EUR 25 million was invested in the company over the co-operation period. With its production facilities reconstructed, Krynitsa can brew 15 million decalitres of beer a year.

Currently, the company employs a 1,200-strong staff.

Japan: Beer prices could go up

Japanese consumers, accustomed to years of deflation, will finally feel some pain when brewers will increase the beer prices, Reuters reported October 16.

Kirin Holdings Co Ltd, Japan's second-biggest beer maker, said it was considering whether to pass higher raw material costs on to customers. The No.1 Brewer, Asahi Breweries Ltd, said it was making efforts to cut other costs.

"Higher beer consumption in the rest of the world, together with poor harvests, has tightened malt supplies," said Hiroki Umezawa, deputy manager at Kirin's investor relations.

Prices of hops and other ingredients, such as corn syrup, are also on the rise, increasing cost pressure, he said.

Currently, some beer makers are negotiating on aluminium can contracts for the business year starting in April, a key factor determining retail beer prices, industry sources said.

Beer prices in Japan have held steady since 1990.

Canada: Molson opens Canada's newest brewery in Moncton

Molson opened its newest brewery in Moncton, New Brunswick, Market Wire reported October 12.

Canada's oldest brewer marked a historic milestone with the opening of the Molson Moncton Brewery, the first for the company in 52 years. The $35-million Moncton Brewery, which will serve the Maritime market, is the sixth brewery in Molson's coast-to-coast operations.

"Today adds another page to Molson's rich history and we are proud to celebrate with the people in Moncton, New Brunswick and the Maritimes," said Kevin Boyce, President and CEO, Molson. "This is a significant investment for our company and today we are proud to officially call Moncton home."

In a ceremony rich with heritage, Molson family members and the senior management team were joined by Premier Shawn Graham, Mayor Lorne Mitton and 500 community leaders to officially cut the ribbon to the new facility and celebrate the first "Cheers" with Moncton-made beer. Europe: Carlsberg and Heineken in discussions for a consortium to make an offer for Scottish & Newcastle entire share capital

Carlsberg A/S and Heineken N.V. confirm that they are in discussions regarding the formation of a consortium to make an offer for the entire issued share capital of Scottish & Newcastle plc, according to Carlsberg’s press release, October 17.

An offer, if made, is likely to be in cash. It is currently intended that Carlsberg will ultimately acquire Scottish & Newcastle plc's interest in BBH, France and Greece and that Heineken will ultimately assume control of Scottish & Newcastle’s business in the UK and other European markets.

To date no formal approach has been made to Scottish & Newcastle and there can be no certainty that an offer for Scottish & Newcastle will ultimately be forthcoming.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

World: Beer output rise puts malt market in deficit

It is still hard to understand, how fast some minor factory closures, but a strong rise of beer output and increased whisky production have turned the malt market from an apparent and overestimated overcapacity into a very serious deficit situation, but it looks as if we have to live with tight malt supplies for some years to come, in spite of construction of new factories in a few countries, analysts reported October 1. Cargill just reopened an idled plant at Sheboygan, Wisconsin, it is the first case that a closed factory is brought back to life.

New constructions must be in good barley lands, and also that seems to become more difficult because of economics and the climate change.

Europe: Barley crop too small to assure safe supplies to malting industry

Total 2007 barley crop of the EU-27 is 57,0 Mill. tons vs. 56,2 Mill. tons last year, according to analysts, October 1. The last good barley crop was 64,3 Mill. tons in 2004. Most EU countries harvested similar quantities as last year, exceptions were Spain with 11.595 Mill. tons (plus 3.277 Mill.), France with 9.509 Mill. tons (minus 0.912 Mill.) and Germany with 10.478 Mill. tons (minus 1.49 Mill.).

The part of spring barley was 31.2 Mill. tons vs. 28,7 last year. Spain produced 2.5 Mill. tons more than last year, Poland 424,000 tons more, but France 230,000 tons less and Germany 367,000 tons less. In the four important malting barley producing countries, Denmark, France, Germany and the U.K., the spring barley crops range from 2.1 Mill. tons in Germany to 2,6 Mill. tons in the U.K., far too little to assure safe supplies to the malting industry. Many farmers have turned their back on spring malting barley, after experiencing poor market prices and severe deductions from contract prices for delivery of lower qualities in past years, and more and more weather problems in the recent past.

Canada: Barley production estimated to increase by 23%

Production is estimated to increase by 23% to 11.8 Mt, close to the 10-year average, due to higher seeded area, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported October 12.

However, supply is expected to only increase slightly due to significantly lower carry-in stocks. Exports are forecast to rise sharply, while domestic use is expected to decrease slightly. Carry-out stocks are projected to decrease marginally. The average off- Board feed barley price (No.1 CW I/S Lethbridge) is forecast to increase from 2006-07 due to strong demand.

Determination of Alcohol in Low Alcohol and Non Alcohol Beers by Gas Chromatography-FID, Near Infra Red Spectroscopy and Catalytic Combustion methods

Abstract
Methods for the determination of alcohol in low and non alcohol beers by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), near infra red spectroscopy (NIR) and catalytic combustion (CC) were collaboratively tested by the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention according to ISO Standard 5725 in order to determine their suitability for publication in Analytica-EBC. Accuracy, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) values are presented. The GC-FID method was found to have better within and between laboratory precision than the other two methods for the determination of alcohol in the non alcohol (0,007- 0,08 % V/V) beers and comparable precision for the low alcohol (0,37-0,81 % V/V) beers. Over the whole range 0,007 to 0,81 % V/V of alcohol, repeatability (r95) was found to be dependent on the mean value and was 0,096 m % V/V whereas reproducibility (R95) was found to be independent of the mean value and was 0,090 % V/V. The gas chromatographic method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC as the reference method for the determination of alcohol in non and low alcohol (<1,0 % V/V) beer samples. The NIR and CC methods have acceptable within and between laboratory precision figures for the determination of alcohol in the low alcohol beers. For the NIR method, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean value and were 0,022 % V/V and 0,103 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol beer samples (>0,37 % V/V). For the CC method, both repeatability (r95) and the reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean and were 0,016 % V/V and 0,087 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol (>0,37 % V/V) beer samples.
