Brewery News
Belgium: Heineken could be Nr 2 in Belgium after S&N takeover

An eventual S&N takeover by Carlsberg and Heineken could place the last on the second position on the Belgium beer market, after InBev, Trends published October 18.

The consequences for the beer market: Alken-Maes’s beers (hapkin, Ciney, Grimbergen, Cristal, Judas, Mort Subite…) will change the owner, ass well as the beers of French Kronenbourg. Alken-Maes’s production is still lower than that of giant InBev.

Heineken is the owner of De Smedt a Opwilk brewery in Flemish Brabant, Belgium.

Bulgaria: Czech Budvar beer enters Bulgarian market

Danish brewer Carlsberg said it signed a deal with Czech Budweiser Budvar, N.C. to market Budvar beer in Bulgaria, according to Novinite, October 17.

Carlsberg will import Budvar beers from the Czech Republic, starting initially with 33 cl glass bottles and 50 cl cans, with 50 cl bottles and kegs to follow suit in the near future.

"Carlsberg Bulgaria is and important partner for us and we see a lot of potential in the Bulgarian market. This partnership is another sign of the quality and recognition of our brand in the world," Budweiser Budvar CEO Jiri Bocek said in a statement.

The Czech brewer, owned by the state, exports its beers to 50 countries worldwide, relying occasionally on partnership agreements with other brewing companies.

Carlsberg markets Budvar beers in Sweden, Croatia and Finland as well, reporting a 37% rise in sales for the first seven months of the year.

Budweiser Budvar becomes the second to Czech beer to step on the Bulgarian market, with Belgium's InBev launching production of its Staropramen brand at one of its three Bulgarian brewers in 2005.

The beer is sold under the Budweiser Budvar or Budejovicky Budvar throughout the world and Czechvar in the US and Canada, due to a ...

Russia: Ochakovo exports 70% more beer in Q3 2007 y/y

Ochakovo, one of Russia's top six breweries, increased beer exports 71% year-on-year to 1.2 million liters in the third quarter of 2007, the company said in a press release.

The growth included exports of premium beer brands, Ochakovo said.

The company increased overall exports in the third quarter by 70% in value and 66.6% by volume. The growth is attributed to growing sales of Ochakovsky kvass, which makes up 40% of exports and jumped nearly 70% to 800,000 liters.

World: The latest figures about beer market

The beer output continues to be fantastic in Asia except for Japan, in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe; Russia produced 25 % more beer in Jan/July than a year ago, Ukraine 17,8 % more in Jan/August and Poland 12 % more in the same period, the analyst recently reported.

Only in Western Europe cold and rainy summer weather spoiled the earlier euphoria, Germany (minus 1,1 %), France and Spain report disappointing sales figures. This has even led to a slower off-take of malt in some cases, enabling maltsters to make small additional sales. They had no problem to dispose quickly of any free quantities. Such sales were reported to Southeast Asia and North Africa.

Finland: Tax on beer likely to rise in 2008

The tax on beer is likely to rise next year more than the three cents a bottle or can, as proposed by the government. Proposals to this effect are being worked on in the Parliament's Finance Committee, Helsingin Sanomat reported October 19.

On Wednesday the proposal won support from the Committee on Social Affairs and Health. The government has proposed tax hikes on alcoholic beverages averaging 11.5 per cent, with the greatest impact on the price strong spirits. The problem with beer is that while the excise tax is rising, the packaging tax on cans, of about three cents per can, will be lifted
In the statement by the Committee for Social Affairs, the lifting of the packaging tax will boost the competitive position of foreign brands of beer, which could lead to a further drop in the price of beer.

While the Finance Committee, chaired by Mika Lintilä (Centre), has focused largely on the taxation of beer, the Social Affairs Committee chaired by Juha Rehula (Centre) would like to go further than the government on raising alcohol taxes in general.

The government's proposal would raise the price of strong spirits by more than ten ...

UK: Scottish & Newcastle may get more bids, investor says

Scottish & Newcastle Plc, the U.K.'s largest brewer, may get more takeover approaches after Carlsberg A/S and Heineken NV said they are considering a bid, according to one of the British company's biggest investors, Bloomberg reported October 18.

“In a consolidating sector we would not be surprised to see further expressions of interest in a unique asset,'' said Tony Foster, U.K. equities investment director at Edinburgh- based Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, which owns 4.3 percent of the brewer.

Scottish & Newcastle has called the approach “unwelcome.'' Carlsberg wants to gain control of Baltic Beverages Holding AB, its Russian joint venture with the Edinburgh-based company, while Heineken is seeking the U.K. brands. Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. and SABMiller Plc, which last week agreed to combine its U.S. assets with Molson Coors Brewing Co., have been cited by analysts as potential suitors for Scottish & Newcastle.

“The company is highly sought-after because of its 50 percent stake in BBH, which gives it leadership in the fast- growing Russian market,'' as well as its No. 1 position in the U.K., France and Finland, Foster said today in an e-mailed statement. SWIP oversees about 98 billion pounds ($200 billion).

Competing bids from Anheuser and ...

Barley News
World: Barley prices to remain high

On the global level, dry conditions in the Black Sea Region and Australia have diminished new-crop feed barley supplies, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, October 12. Furthermore, export restrictions by the Ukraine government and reduced feed barley export from Australia are largely constraining world export supplies.

Combined with strong import demand, particularly from the Middle East, world prices will remain high. Weather events over major producing regions will continue to play a major role in the level and variability of prices for feed barley.

Canada: Malting barley quality at issue amid tight world supply

Maltsters will have to adjust accordingly this year as the quality of malting barley suffers due to tight global barley supply, said Trent Rude, Merchandising Manager for Malting Barley, Oats and Rye for Viterra, Dow Jones Newswires reported October 15.

The global barley supply tightened this year due to poor production and quality concerns, particularly in Australia and Europe. While tight supply means increased prices, high prices may also indicate lowered quality.

"Each year is different as to what is malt quality and what is not. The maltsters have to look at what has been produced for quality and then adjust their specifications to make sure they can secure the best of the quantity that they require," Rude explained.

"The amount of barley that is going to be needed from Canadian production is greater this year due to production problems in barley from other producing nations such as Australia and Europe."

When asked if the quality of barley graded as malt was lowered this year to meet demand, Rude replied that it had been.

But Joe Wang, coarse grain analyst with the Market Analysis Division of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, doesn't think the quality of malting barley decreased this year. He ...

Denmark & Sweden & Finland: Barley harvest very good compared with 2006

Most analyses have now been dealt with and results are generally good in Denmark, better in Sweden and very good in Finland compared to last year, according to H. Abildstrøm & Co ApS, October 16.

How much do we have? How much still unsold? These are the daily questions from the industry.

If we base on 12% protein as maximum we see in round figures:

Net export surplus traded in % as per date.(private judgement):

DENMARK 830.000 ts 80%
SWEDEN 225.000 ts 60%
FINLAND 50.000 ts 15%

In other words, barley enough?? Demand is immense and supporting the very high price level but in principle - even taking into consideration the lack of carry over from 2006 - it is our belief that barley should be able to cover the malt-sales as long as barley with 12% protein is being accepted.

Cautiously reviewing our supply/demand figures for spring barley and shall add on next report.

Also beginning to look into 2008 sowing plans but early days here while fairly confident on areas in the UK: Scotland + 5%, England unchanged.

Denmark will be up for more reasons: a) premium tempting b) grass-seed market falling apart leaving space to spring crops, c) sugar beet- areas will diminish leaving excellent foundation for ...

Europe: Barley crop low, proteins high

Barley yields were low all over the Continental EU, also the grain size leading to high percentages of screenings, according to analysts, October 1.

The selection of spring malting barley is lower than in normal years, specifically in France, where cooperatives are obliged to buy back pre-harvest sales. Protein contents are high on the Continent, ranging from an average of 12 % in France to 13 – 15 % in Southeast Europe. Local problems of fusarium, pregermination and sprouting complete the mediocre crop result.

The U.K. and especially Scandinavia did much better, good grain size, correct proteins, but their surplus is not large enough to stabilize the EU supply and demand situation.

Hops News
USA: Growers short of hops for beer makers

After years of low prices, Washington hop growers have a chance for big profits - if they only had more of the bitter flowers to sell to beer makers, AP State reported October 18.

Ann George of the Washington Hop Commission in Moxee says worldwide production is down for the first time in a decade. Prices are up, but many hop growers have switched to other crops or sold their land for development.

In the Yakima Valley, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. hop production, there were 60 growers with 27,000 acres in 2000. That's down to 36 growers with 23,000 acres.

Scientific Digest
Determination of Alcohol in Low Alcohol and Non Alcohol Beers by Gas Chromatography-FID, Near Infra Red Spectroscopy and Catalytic Combustion methods

Submitted by A. Toivola, P. Varjú and J. Torrent on behalf of the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention

Abstract
Methods for the determination of alcohol in low and non alcohol beers by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), near infra red spectroscopy (NIR) and catalytic combustion (CC) were collaboratively tested by the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention according to ISO Standard 5725 in order to determine their suitability for publication in Analytica-EBC. Accuracy, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) values are presented. The GC-FID method was found to have better within and between laboratory precision than the other two methods for the determination of alcohol in the non alcohol (0,007- 0,08 % V/V) beers and comparable precision for the low alcohol (0,37-0,81 % V/V) beers. Over the whole range 0,007 to 0,81 % V/V of alcohol, repeatability (r95) was found to be dependent on the mean value and was 0,096 m % V/V whereas reproducibility (R95) was found to be independent of the mean value and was 0,090 % V/V. The gas chromatographic method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC as the reference method for the determination of alcohol in non and low alcohol (<1,0 % V/V) beer samples. The NIR and CC methods have acceptable within and between laboratory precision figures for the determination of alcohol in the low alcohol beers. For the NIR method, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean value and were 0,022 % V/V and 0,103 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol beer samples (>0,37 % V/V). For the CC method, both repeatability (r95) and the reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean and were 0,016 % V/V and 0,087 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol (>0,37 % V/V) beer samples.
