UK: Scottish & Newcastle plots buy-in of BBH
|
Scottish & Newcastle is plotting to fund a solo bid for Carlsberg's stake in the two companies' Russian joint venture through a massive rights issue, The Telegraph published October 29. Under the plan, the British brewer would also borrow against the future cashflow of the venture.
The audacious proposal is among a number of options being studied by the board of S&N as a way of fending off an unsolicited takeover bid from rivals Carlsberg and Heineken. The duo last week tabled a 720p-a-share bid, valuing S&N at £6.8bn. The offer was immediately rejected by the board, with chairman Sir Brian Stewart describing it as "derisory".
The board of S&N has discussed various funding options to buy Baltic Beverages Holding
When news of Carlsberg and Heineken's intentions first broke, S&N considered joining forces with other global brewers that could provide the financial muscle needed to gain control of Carlsberg's share of the venture – Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) – which could cost up to £4.5bn.
SABMiller, which produces its eponymous Lite, and Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch are both understood to be watching the situation closely.
But the S&N board is now considering how it could seize control of BBH without compromising its independence. There is

Determination of Fumonisins B1 and B2 in Beer
Authors
LUBOMÍR DAŠKO, DRAHOMÍRA RAUOVÁ, ELENA BELAJOVÁ and MILAN KOVÁC
Food Research Institute, Bratislava, Slovak Republic
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the contamination of beer of Slovak origin with fumonisins. A suitable
analytical procedure was suggested – the limit of detection at the level close to 1 µg/l was achieved for both
fumonisins B1 and B2. The recovery was determined at 93% for fumonisin B1 and at 78% for fumonisin B2. Fluorescence
detection was used after derivatisation with a mixture of o-phthaldialdehyde and 2-mercaptoethanol.
Phosphate buffer usually applied resulted in a poor separation of derivatised fumonisins. Peak splitting was
observed depending on the pH of the eluent. The pH value of 2.6 was found suitable for the peak splitting
elimination. A convenient gradient elution metod was suggested avoiding the possible interference in fumonisin
contents determination. For the preparation of samples, immunoaffinity cleaning procedure was applied. Beer
samples from all domestic producers were analysed. The content of fumonisins determined was under the limit
of detection in all cases. All the beers tested were produced from the barley grown in 2003.
Keywords: beer; fumonisin B1; fumonisin B2; immunoaffinity clean-up; HPLC
