Czech Republic: Record output for Czech breweries in 2007
|
Czech beer output will likely be higher than 20 million hectolitres for the first time this year, said Jan Vesely, chairman of the Czech Beer and Malt Association, CTK reported December 20.
The growth in production will not be as big as in the previous years mainly due to a slowdown in exports, Vesely said.
Czech consumption is rising at a slower pace. It is pulled by rising consumption of non-alcoholic beer.
Czech beer output in the Jan-Sept period grew by 1.6 percent, while for the full year 2006 it rose by less than 4 percent.
Exports are the main driving force although their growth is slower compared with the previous years.
Breweries will export 3.6 million hectolitres this year, about 100,000 hectolitres more year-on-year. Last year's growth was about four times higher.
Exports account for over 18 percent of domestic beer production, with most of the output exported to the EU countries.
Easing barriers after the country's EU entry was of key importance for a steep growth in Czech beer exports, the association said.
Entering foreign markets is now more difficult also due to the firming crown.
Most beer is exported to Germany (36 percent), Slovakia (17.4 percent) and the United Kingdom (8.2 percent).
Domestic beer consumption is foreseen

Japan: Sapporo Breweries to raise beer prices in April 2008 on higher costs
|
Sapporo Breweries Ltd. said Thursday that it will raise the shipment prices of its beer and quasi-beer products on April 1, 2008, due to rising materials prices, according to Jiji Press, December 20.
While the company did not disclose the margin of the price hike, retail prices of its beer and beer-like drinks are expected to rise by 3 to 5 pct from the current levels, industry sources said.
The shipment prices of Sapporo Breweries' beer products will thus be raised for the first time in about 18 years since March 1990.
Sapporo Breweries, a unit of Sapporo Holdings Ltd., will follow in the footsteps of rivals Kirin Brewery Co. and Asahi Breweries Ltd., which are set to raise their beer and quasi-beer prices in February and March, respectively.
Suntory Ltd. is also expected to decide on a price hike shortly.
According to Sapporo Breweries officials, malt and hop prices are shooting up amid growing global demand for biofuels, while higher crude oil prices are pushing up the prices of aluminum cans.
The company's materials costs in 2008 are expected to increase 3 billion yen from the current year, the officials said.
Following the shipment price hike, the retail price of its Yebisu beer is seen to

SABMiller plc and Molson Coors Brewing Company announced that they have signed the definitive transaction agreement for the combination of the U.S. and Puerto Rico operations of their respective subsidiaries, Miller and Coors, into MillerCoors LLC, the joint venture that they announced on 9 October 2007, according to Business Wire, December 21.
Graham Mackay, Chief Executive of SABMiller, said, "Today's announcement is an important step forward towards completing the MillerCoors joint venture, a combination that will ultimately allow us to better meet the needs of distributors, retailers and consumers in the U.S. marketplace by providing greater choice, product availability and increased innovation."
Leo Kiely, Chief Executive of Molson Coors, said, "This combination of our two highly complementary U.S. businesses creates a stronger brewer and allows us to better compete. We look forward to closing the deal in mid-2008 and are cooperating fully with the regulatory clearance process."
The closing of the transaction is subject to obtaining clearance from U.S. competition authorities, certain other regulatory clearances and any required third-party consents. The Miller business and the Coors business will continue to be conducted separately and in the ordinary course until completion of the transaction.

Bulgaria: Beer sales up 12% in 2007
|
Since 2007 started in Bulgaria were sold a total of 5,032 hectoliters of beer, shows data of Brewery Union in Bulgaria. This is almost 12% more compared with same period last year, according to News.bg, December 20.
The realized production for November was 260,6 thousands hectoliters beer. Slight drop was marked due to the autumn-winter season, when beer market is comparatively weak.
Usually local breweries stake on dark beer by this time of the year.
Carlsberg Bulgaria announced the beginning of the season with dark Tuborg, Zagorka's portfolio includes Stolichno dark and a dark variant of Ariana. Kamenitsa and Boliarka marks also offer dark ale.
Kamenitsa is leading in November's common sales, followed by Zagorka (owned by Heineken). Third player on the beer market ranks Carlsberg Bulgaria.

Canada: Malting barley PROs unchanged, feed barley up 10%
|
The CWB released its latest Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2007-08 crop year. Feed barley is up $10 per tonne while malting barley values remain unchanged from the November PRO, according to CWB’s press release, December 20.
Malting barley
Malting barley prices were mostly stable to slightly down during the past month due mainly to sluggish world demand. However, limited supplies caused by lower production and quality issues in Canada, EU, Australia and Argentina continue to provide underlying support for the malting barely market. Tight supplies will continue until the new crop harvest in August 2008.
Feed barley
Pool A - A very small pool size reflects limited delivery opportunities due to logistical capacity restraints for moving grain to port. Limited exports from the Black Sea and production problems in Europe have reduced the available supply of feed grains for the world. This has kept global feed barley fundamentals tight, supporting high prices.
Pool B - The world feed-grain situation continues to be tight. Statistics Canada reduced Canada's barley production by close to 900 000 tonnes, which further tightened the global barley market. Saudi Arabia continues to have uncovered demand for the spring of 2008 and is expected to come into the market soon

USA: Malting, feed barley markets saw slight price rallies in December
|
Heading into the final month of 2007, both feed and malting barley markets saw slight price rallies at several local elevators while in other locations the markets held their ground, Farm & Ranch Guide reported December 20.
The strengthening for both classes was a result of little barley movement by farmers according to Larry Raap, grain merchandiser for Sun Prairie Grain in Minot, N.D.
In addition, feed barley prices received some support from potential export sales and the latest USDA Feed Outlook report that trimmed the world carryover stocks of barley even more.
“We just see a lack of movement as far as barley is concerned,” Raap said. “Since the highs of around $6.25 to the producer, the prices have dropped off and what free stocks of barley are out there they are just sitting on, hoping the price will get better again.
“And on the feed side the prices have improved. There for a while it was down around the $4.80 level, but now it's back to over $5 again, and it's basically the export business that's continuing to drive the feed market,” he continued.
“And some of the maltsters are getting a little more aggressive, depending on who needs some, so there seems

World: A shortage of hops threatens beer industry
|
Hit by price increases and shortages, many breweries, particularly the small “craft brewers” and the even smaller microbreweries, are being forced to raise prices, make do with modified recipes or shut off the spigots altogether, The Economist published December 19.
The humble hop, the plant that gives beer its distinctive flavour, is the main problem. Many farmers in the Pacific north-west, where America's hop production is concentrated, have turned to more profitable lines—especially corn, which can be made into ethanol. The decrease in hop production, put at some 50% over the past decade, has sent prices through the roof. Brian Owens, the brewmaster of the O'Fallon Brewery near St Louis, Missouri, says that the variety he once bought for $3 a pound (0.45kg) now costs five times that. Many smaller breweries cannot find what they need at any price. Industry giants like Anheuser-Busch and Miller are better off, thanks to long-term contracts. But even Anheuser-Busch has been forced to raise prices for its six-packs.
Without their supply of hops, some smaller producers are going out of business, bringing to a halt the fastest-growing segment of the industry. Other craft brewers and brewpubs are experimenting with new recipes, hoping their customers will adapt.

The process of vertical coordination and its consequences
within the beer commodity chain
Vertikalni koordinace a jeji projevy v komoditní vertikale piva
E. VESELSKA Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Brno, Czech Republic
Abstract
The paper aims to identify the potential benefits from vertical
coordination within the selected commodity chain. The problem is
applied to the beer commodity chain because of its high importance
in the Czech agri business and foreign trade. On the basis of the
vertical analysis of the chosen commodity chain, a mathematic model
of consumer price simulation is created and the existence of
vertical coordination is verified in the analysed commodity chain. This model assumesthat input price increases are transmitted to consumers. The retail prices of beer a resimulated by holding technology and input-output relationships constant, while production as well as marketing costs change according to the changes in input prices. The simulated retail price is then compared with the actual retail price to indicate productivity gains resulting from vertical coordination passed on to consumers. The result sof the Model of Retail Price Simulation showt hat Czech brewery industry was in the observed period (1994–2002) vertically coordinated.
Key words: retail price simulation, vertical coordination, agri-food chain and beer
