The US beer giant, Anheuser-Busch and the China’s largest beer maker Tsingtao Brewery have sealed their strategic alliance. According to the agreement Anheuser-Bush will increase its stake in Tsingtao Brewery from 4.5% to 27% during 7 years investing $ 181 million as financial and technical aid. The first 4.5% of Tsingtao shares were purchased by AB in 1993. TsingTao is a leading national brand and about 50% of its output is sold abroad in 40 countries. Bulgaria’s competition authorities have passed plans by the Danish brewer Carlsberg to buy a 67% stake in the country’s local brewery Pirinsko Pivo, the local press reported. The deal will now be closed by October 25, 2002. According to the decision of the Commission for the Protection of Competition Carlsberg will be allowed a 20% share of the local beer market. Thus Carlsberg will take the third place on Bulgaria’s beer market, after Greek Brewinvest and Belgian Interbrew, which hold 26% and 23% respectively. Carlsberg already owns 59.4% stake in Bulgaria’s Shumensko Pivo from July 2002.

In the fourth quarter of 2002 Russian brewery Patra will sell by auction its 25.5% shares owned by state. 23.8% of shares are owned by Sun Interbrew, the joint venture between Belgium’s Interbrew and Sun Brewing. Patra employees own 50.6% of shares. The value of the shareholding on sales is thought to be around US$25 million. According to Patra brewery press spokesman, although Sun Interbrew had no influence on Patra activity, Sun Interbrew would probably take part in the auction. Patra brewery has produced 59 million litres of beer and soft drinks during the first nine months of 2002.
