1. Industry news
Interbrew, the Belgian beer giant, has purchased from the Eijsbouts family a controlling stake in Astein, the Dutch drinks wholesaler based in Netherlands, Asten. The value of the deal was not revealed.
The operations of the company and its 18 employees will be moved to the Interbrew facility in the southern Netherlands. Astein is 100 years old and deal with import beers.
The Hungarian Patent and Trademark Office has declared that Czech brewer, Budejovicky Budvar cannot use the name “Bud”.
The patent office has reported that “Bud” does not refer to the city where the Czech brewer is located, Ceske Budejovice. According to Anheuser-Busch, the Czech brewer cannot claim that the names "Budweiser Bier-Budvar" or "Budweiser Budvar" are connected with its place of origin.
However, Budejovicky Budvar will be permitted to use the name, "Budweiser Bier" in Hungary.
Ausbulk, the South Australian agri-business has achieved the takeover of about 93%F of the Australia’s largest malt processor, Joe White Maltings, a Victorian-based company with plants in country New South Wales and Victoria, as well as Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, ABC News online reported.
David Thomas, the spokesman of Ausbulk, says the company will now compulsorily acquire the remaining shares in Joe White Maltings. Ausbulk's offer closes next Monday.
From May 1, 2003 the tax on the low-malt beer “happoshu” will be increased by Y20.47 per 350ml if the proposal of the Japan’s Ministry of Finance is accepted.
The Tax System Research Commission of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party intends to raise the taxes on happoshu, wine and some other alcoholic beverages, which currently have lower tax rates than beer and sake. However, the planned tax increases have met strong opposition from the drinks industry.
Green King, the UK regional brewer and pub operator, reported a profit before tax and exceptionals of about £35m ($55.20m) for the 24 weeks to October 19, 2002, what prevails the forecast. Analysts predicted a £34.5m profit.
Green King, the brewer of Greene King IPA, Abbott Ale and Old Speckled Hen beer brands, has registered a rise of turnover of about 17% up to £249m.
Company’s CEO, Tim Bridge said: "Consumer expenditure patterns are unpredictable, but we are confident that the strategic and financial position of the company, the quality of our businesses and the strength of our brands stand us in good stead even if general trading conditions deteriorate.".....more info
