How good is the presence of yeast for dry hopping?

ABSTRACT
A presentation at the Young Scientist Symposium described brewing trials and dry hopping with yeast present versus yeast removed. The US researchers found that the presence of yeast was advantageous in this instance as the method of dry hop removal was by centrifugation and the presence of yeast was found to have several benefits on the operation of the centrifuge but also for the flavour stability of the beer. The researchers also found that with the removal of yeast cells, measurable quantities of myrcene with an effect on the aroma and flavor of the beer were removed.

Brewery news USA, IL & WI: General Beverage owners revive Berghoff brand with seven new beers
This summer, Berghoff Brewing will revive its famed beers, breathing new life into a classic brand that has offered fine beer throughout the Midwest since 1887, beerpulse.com reported on April, 17.

Today, thanks to updated branding, new recipes and a move to the Stevens Point Brewery, Berghoff aims to capture a larger audience of beer lovers with its revamped product brought forth by the same down-home work ethic that has driven the company for over 120 years. Berghoff’s new brews will be available beginning this June in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana.

“Berghoff is a true Midwestern beer. It was the first beer brewed and served in Chicago after the repeal of Prohibition; then, in 1960, Berghoff began brewing their beers in Wisconsin, where it will continue to be brewed today,” says owner Ben Minkoff, whose family has owned General Beverage Distributors for the past 80 years and purchased the Berghoff brand in 1994. “We want to bring back a sense of pride in drinking a hometown beer that is such a critical part of this region’s brewery history.”

Berghoff will launch seven new brews, led by the seasonal Solstice Wit Beer (5.2% ABV), made with Calamansi juice, an Asian citrus fruit, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: SweetWater Brewing Company finishes expansion
Nearly two years in the making, SweetWater Brewing Company is polishing off the finishing touches on its newly expanded brewhouse, a system that can now manage more than 250 barrel batches, brewbound.com reported on April, 17.

This project completes the final phase of SweetWater’s recent three-part production overhaul. With the new system in operation, SweetWater’s brewing capacity has more than quadrupled, allowing the team to start checking off some long awaited boxes, including plans to expand its Southeast distribution to a handful of new markets and open sales to three new states for the first time since 2008.

“In the 16 years we’ve been brewing beer, we’ve never been able to keep up with the demand,” said Freddy Bensch, founder of SweetWater Brewing Company. “This new brewhouse will allow us to brew larger amounts of beer at a single time. Most importantly, it will allow us to slow down those processes and improve the quality of our beer, and the quality of life for people behind it…two things we are most dedicated to.”

In 2012, SweetWater still experienced a 15% annual increase from its existing sales footprint halting production during the peak summer selling season on a number of key items due ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Institution Ale Co. to open new brewery in Camarillo in June
Institution Ale Co. announced on April, 17 the upcoming grand opening of Camarillo’s first brewery this June.

The 2,900 square feet brewery will be located off of Pleasant Valley Road, and offer a spacious tasting room where guests can taste beer and purchase beer to-go.

The new brewery blossomed from one local family’s ambitions to transform their longtime hobby of home brewing into the town’s first craft brewery. Co-owners Roger, Ryan, and Shaun Smith will be a father and sons team, brewing unfiltered American style ales.

“Ventura County is starting to embrace craft beer and we can’t wait to be a part of the local beer culture,” said co-owner Shaun Smith. “It’s going to be a lot of fun making beer for the community we’ve been a part of for so many years.”

The brewery will feature a modern-industrial style tasting room for visitors open five days a week, offering tasters and glasses of beer. Beer will also be available to-go in growlers and kegs.

“The tasting room will be a great atmosphere to sit down and enjoy a beer,” said co-owner Ryan Smith. “We will also offer tours of our brewery regularly for those who want to learn more about the brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Latitude 33 Brewing Co. to bottle its beers and expand distribution across California
Latitude 33 Brewing Company announced on April, 17 it will begin bottling its beers at the end of the month and expects its packaged product to be hitting store shelves throughout San Diego County by late May 2013.

The company will begin by issuing three beers from its year-round line-up in 22 ounce “bomber” bottles. It also plans to bottle a number of others from its rotating and seasonal brews throughout the summer.

In addition to bottling, the brewery is also eyeing a northward expansion of its distribution with an initial focus on Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and the rest of California by year’s end.

“Since we began draft distribution this past fall, we’ve been asked about bottles, but our production levels weren’t high enough to meet the demands of both,” said Latitude 33 head of brewery operations, Kevin Buckley. “Now that our production is ramped up, we can start packaging and getting onto retail shelves as well as taps.”

The brewery, which opened in 2012 in Green Flash Brewing’s former facility in the city of Vista, has one of the largest production brewhouses in the county and plans on leveraging that capacity to grow its distribution footprint throughout 2013 and beyond.

“Adding ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Upslope Brewing to open second brewery and taproom
Upslope Brewing Company, brewers of premium ales, announced the grand opening of a second brewery and taproom on April 24, 2013.

Located in Boulder, the 17,000 square foot brewery will allow Upslope to produce 70% more beer initially, with room for future expansion. It is also home to a 2300 square foot taproom.

“Demand for our beer continues to grow exponentially and ongoing expansion at the current location doesn’t meet our future goals,” said Upslope Founder, Matt Cutter. “Flatiron Park has the infrastructure that our production brewery needs to take it to the next level.”

Upslope Brewing Company opened its doors in November 2008 in North Boulder with two beer styles all in cans. Over the past four and a half years the company has expanded 6 times in their current location and has added 2 additional flagship beers and a Limited Release series.

In addition to the new facility, the original Lee Hill Road brewery will remain open for production as an incubator for new and innovative beer styles.

Upslope’s flagship beers include: Pale Ale, Craft Lager, India Pale Ale, and Brown Ale.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Bush Pilot Brewing launches its first beer
Bush Pilot Brewing, a new “gypsy brewery” in Ontario, announced on April, 18 that its first beer is now available for retail purchase.

Led by the founders of beer, wine and spirits import agency Roland + Russell, Bush Pilot is partnering with established breweries in Ontario to produce its beers, many of which will be created in collaboration with well-known brewers from the international craft brewing scene.

The first offering from this unique project is Stormy Monday, a spiced and barrel-aged barley wine brewed from a recipe developed by Anders Kissmeyer, formerly of Nørrebro Bryghus and now head of his own nomadic brewery, Kissmeyer Beer.

Stormy Monday was brewed using a large variety of spices and flavourings, including star anise, bitter orange peel, cocoa, cinnamon, dried fruit, vanilla beans, cardamom, juniper berries, maple syrup and more. Two batches were brewed – one at Niagara College Teaching Brewery and the other at Nickel Brook Brewery – and a portion was aged for over seven months in Calvados barrels sourced from Domaine Dupont in France before being blended back with a non-aged version to create the final product.

Bush Pilot Stormy Monday is available now at select LCBO outlets, retailing for C $12.75 per 750 ml bottle.

Brewery news USA, CO: Echo Brewing to open second location in Erie and contract brew beers for Atom Brewing
Echo Brewing, which celebrated its first anniversary past weekend in Frederick, has decided to open a second brewery in Old Town Erie, westword.com reported on April, 16.

Until that's ready, though, Echo will also serve as a jumping-off point for a second brewing company that plans to open in Erie: Atom Brewing.

Atom founder and longtime homebrewer Jeff Porn has been planning a brewery in that town for several years. In the meantime, Echo will contract brew beers for Atom and serve them at its current location, and eventually at the new one as well.

"Once that's open, that will be my primary location; however, I will actually brew out of both locations," Porn says. After a year or so, he hopes to open his own taproom.

"With our plans, we need a unique location that can accommodate what we want to do and our primary goal is to have that location in Erie," he adds.

Echo owners Daniel and Dennis Richards haven't given the specific address for the new brewery, which will be called Echo Brewing Cask and Barrel.

So far, they have also declined to provide any other details except to say that the focus of the second location will be "brewing cask ale, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Seventh Son Brewing Co. to release its first beers
Seventh Son Brewing Co. will debut its first four beers this weekend, ohio.com reported on April, 18.

The new production brewery and tasting room in Columbus has been open for months. But due to building code and mechanical issues, it hasn’t released its own brews — until now.

People will be able to sample American Strong Ale, Spring Sheep Stout, Stone Fort Oat Brown Ale and Humulus Nimbus Super Pale Ale.

Seventh Son also plans to start distributing its beers on draft to area bars and restaurants next week. The brewery has a bottling machine but is holding off on bottling for now.

"We want to iron out what works the best and then put it in bottles," said co-owner Collin Castore, who also runs Bodega and The Barrel and the Bottle in Columbus. "We’re going to take our time and figure out what people like and have some fun trying new recipes and see how it goes."
