Contributions of Hop Hard Resins to Beer Quality
ABSTRACT
The brewing value of hops (Humulus lupulus) is primarily attributed to the flavor- and bitter-active compounds found in the resins. These resins are synthesized and accumulated in the lupulin glands of the female hop cones. Early work on the fractionation of hop resins, based on the solubility of resins in various organic solvents, classified them into soft resins and hard resins. The hard resin is mainly composed by oxidation products insoluble in hexane. Hitherto, research has primarily focused on studying the impact on beer properties of the major hop bitter acids (alpha- and beta-acids) present in the soft resin. Therefore, little information is available on the functionality of the hard resin and for years it has been considered of no brewing value. Further the exact role of the hard resins in the brewing process is not well understood. For these reasons, a detailed study of the hard resins contributions to beer quality was performed. Brewing trials were conducted in which hop pellets were replaced with resin rich extracts. Thereby it was possible to establish the brewing potential of the hop hard resin. There is evidence to suggest that further degradation products were formed upon vigorous boiling of the hard resin. It is believed that upon extended storage periods these ultimate oxidation products are also formed. From the analytical data it was established that the hard resins positively contribute to the foam stabilizing properties. Furthermore, in the different sensory evaluations of the fresh beers, the hard resins proved to impact all analyzed attributes. With increasing hard resin concentrations, higher bitter intensities were recorded. The perceived bitterness of the hard resin beers suggested that the hard resins have a high bittering potential. Finally, at high hard resin concentrations a pleasant bitterness was produced and the overall flavor stability of the beers was high.

USA, CA: Smog City Brewing opens its own tasting room and brewery
|
Smog City Brewing Co. finally has its own home, Los Angeles Times reported on April, 30.
Started by John Porter and his wife, Laurie, while Porter worked at Tustin Brewing Co., a brewpub in Orange County, Smog City has moved to a new facility just steps from the hot spots of the South Bay brewing scene.
The Porters have spent the last few months focused on building a brewery and tasting room in the Torrance industrial neighborhood that also houses Monkish Brewing and the Dudes Brewery. The new 5,500-square-foot facility will allow for not only more production, but also the development of new recipes, more experimentation and an on-site tasting room in which to serve the brews.
Featuring 20 tap handles, the tasting room is open to the bustling brew house and fermenters where Smog City's beers are born. Working behind the bar at Tustin Brewing and getting immediate feedback from the customers was invaluable to Porter, and he says he's excited to have the same intimate relationship with drinkers at Smog City's brewery.
In addition to increasing production and experimenting with new brews, Smog City has signed with Stone Brewing's distribution arm to bring its kegs into more L.A. bars and restaurants.

|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported first quarter 2013 net revenue of $135.9 mln, an increase of $22.7 mln or 20%, over the same period last year, mainly due to core shipment growth of 18%.
Net income for the first quarter was $6.9 mln, or $0.51 per diluted share, a decrease of $0.6 mln, or $0.05 per diluted share, from the first quarter of 2012. This decrease was primarily due to higher cost of goods and increased investments in advertising, promotional and selling expenses that were only partially offset by net revenue increases and a favorable tax settlement in the first quarter of 2013.

USA, CO: New Belgium Brewing Co. adds capacity at its facility in Fort Collins
|
While New Belgium Brewing Co. is expanding with a new brewery on the East Coast, it also is adding capacity at its headquarters in Fort Collins to keep up with the strong demand for its beer, The Coloradoan reported on May, 1.
The brewery, known for beers such as Fat Tire and Sunshine Wheat, is nearly done with a 140,000-barrel expansion. The ability to brew more beer will provide New Belgium the opportunity to continue to expand distribution into new states.
The addition of 400 metric tons of malt capacity, four 2,200-hectoliter bright beer tanks, 12 2,200-hectoliter fermentation vessels and a 30 percent expansion to the Fort Collins brewery’s process water treatment facility is intended to meet demand for production until New Belgium’s new brewery in Asheville, N.C., comes online.
The expansion also included additional filtration capacity and 32 new oaken foeders for wood beer conditioning, according to the brewery.
When completed, the expansion will increase brewing capacity from 850,000 barrels to 920,000 barrels.
The brewery produced 764,424 barrels in 2012, at 16 percent increase from 2011. Spokesman Bryan Simpson said New Belgium anticipates producing more than 800,000 barrels this year.

Canada & China: Canada’s Russell Breweries launching a test brewery and brewpub restaurant in Hefei, China this summer
|
Further to the agreement signed with FVI Capital Inc. ("FVI") in October 2012, Russell Breweries Inc. ("RBI") announced on May, 2 that a test brewery and brewpub restaurant is scheduled to open this summer in Hefei, China. Hefei is the largest city of Anhui Province of Eastern China with a population of 5.7 million. It is a booming industrial city that has had very strong economic growth and is open to international investment.
"Our partners in China have broken ground on building its test brewery and adjoining brewpub-style restaurant in the city of Hefei," said Brian Harris, CEO Russell Breweries Inc. "Scheduled to open this summer, the brewery will be the first in the region to offer high-end, small-batch beers to North American craft brewing standards."

USA, MO & FL: Brew Hub LLC signs lease in Lakeland
|
Brew Hub LLC announced the signing of a lease in Lakeland, Fla., for its first brewery site, with construction expected to begin in May, brewbound.com reported on April, 30.
The company, which plans spending about $100 mln to build five contract breweries over the next five years, signed a 50,400 square-foot industrial lease in Lakeland, a city about 35 miles east of Tampa and about 55 miles southwest of Orlando. As previously reported, the brewery will have an initial brewing capacity of approximately 75,000 barrels annually. Colliers International Tampa Bay, a real estate service, represented Brew Hub in the transaction.
“This will be a very specialized build-out, especially to accommodate all the tanks and pipes involved in the brewing process,” said Dolores Seymour of Colliers International. “The shell has to be built first, and then the equipment will go in before construction can continue.
Started by former Anheuser-Busch executive Tim Schoen, Brew Hub, which uses the slogan “where craft brewers go to grow,” will use the Lakeland facility as a blueprint for future facilities. Canada, ON: Kensington Brewing Company to have its own facility

Kensington Brewing Company is finally getting ready to set up shop in its namesake neighbourhood, after two years in business, torontoist.com reported on May, 1.
Augusta Ale will actually be made on Augusta Avenue starting later this year.
On the surface, it doesn’t quite make sense that a brewery named Kensington Brewing Company—which has beers named after Kensington Market’s Augusta Avenue and Baldwin Street, and which borrows images from the neighbourhood for its branding materials—to brew its products in Guelph. But brewery founder Brock Shepherd says it’s not as odd as one might think.
Kensington Brewing Company is what’s known as a “contract brewer,” meaning it makes its suds in rented facilities, on rented equipment. “Contract brewing is a good way to start out,” Shepherd says. “The cash outlay is minimal. If things don’t work out, you’re not out this huge half-million- or million-dollar investment.”
As a result, Kensington Brewing Company’s line of products has never actually been made in Kensington Market. The company’s beers were initially made at Etobicoke’s Black Oak Brewing Company, and are now produced at Guelph’s Wellington Brewery.

USA, OH: Millersburg Brewing Co. opened in downtown Millersburg
|
William Baker and Duane Yoder, two businessmen who own the Bags Sports Pubs in Millersburg and Sugarcreek, have transformed a former antiques store and grocery store into the Millersburg Brewing Co. in downtown Millersburg, ohio.com reported on April, 30.
The 3,000-square-foot space opened to the public on May, 1.
There were six beers available on opening day: a blonde, amber, porter, vanilla porter, India pale ale and stout.
"Classic beers made with today’s taste," Baker said.
Millersburg Brewing is part of a wave of new breweries in Ohio opening not in major cities or suburbs, but in smaller communities or even rural areas of the state. Bidwell, Flatrock, Heath, Findlay and Bryan all have seen or will see breweries open.
There are now more than 70 breweries operating in the state.
Baker and Yoder are determined to provide a taste of craft beer for not only locals but the visitors who flock to Ohio’s Amish country each year.
"We thought this would be kind of a cool thing for Millersburg," Baker said. "We have a lot of tourism that comes through here. Let’s try to make a destination-oriented place instead of a drive-by place."

US & Australia: Sale of GrainCorp to ADM one step closer to completion
|
The sale of east coast grain handler GrainCorp to US food processor Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) is one step closer to completion after the company announced due diligence on the deal has been completed, ABC Online reported on March, 1.
After six months of rejected offers, GrainCorp directors have given their support for a deal worth more than A$3 billion which would see shareholders receive A$13.20 per share.
The deal still requires the approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board, the Competition and Consumer Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
Chinese approval can be a lengthy process, with GrainCorp chairman Don Taylor estimating that the sale could take up to six months to complete.
The sale also requires the approval of 50.1 per cent of GrainCorp shareholders.
Shareholders will receive an additional dividend of 3.5 Australian cents per share for each month the sale process continues beyond October 1.

Canada, BC: Parallel 49 Brewing to release three new beers
|
Parallel 49 Brewing announced the upcoming release of three new beers, including one to mark the brewery’s first anniversary, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 1.
Set to be released next week, the new brands include Humphrey Biere De Garde, Black Hops Cascadian Dark Lager, and Hopnotist Imperial IPA. The latter is the anniversary release and also the first single hop beer from P49.
Full descriptions and other details about the three new beers have not yet been announced.

Canada, AB: Tool Shed Brewing to open this summer in Calgary
|
New Calgary-based start-up Tool Shed Brewing announced plans to release its first commercial product in its home province this summer, with a brewery in a neighbouring province providing some much needed assistance to make it happen, Canadian Beer News reported on April, 29.
The new company is still raising funds to open its own brewing facility. In the meantime, co-founder Jeff Orr will be relocating to Aldergrove BC for three months to work with the team at Dead Frog Brewery, where the initial batches of Tool Shed beer will be brewed for distribution in Alberta.
Tool Shed intends to have cans and kegs of beer ready to be released this July.

|
CB Brewing Company, located at the base of the Finger Lakes Region in Western New York, launches its summer seasonal, Finger Lakes Summer Wheat, brewbound.com reported on April, 30.
Finger Lakes Summer Wheat is a German- style Hefeweizen and is available in 12oz bottles and draft.
The product will be available in draught and six-packs May 3, 2013 in bars, restaurants and supermarket chains throughout WNY and the Finger Lakes region. Finger Lakes Summer Wheat will also be available at CB Brewing.

Deschutes Brewery and Great Lakes Brewing Company, both founded in 1988, have come together to create an Imperial Smoked Porter to celebrate their shared silver anniversary, beerpulse.com reported on May, 1.
This beer is the second in Deschutes Brewery’s Class of ‘88 collaboration series, which celebrates the anniversary of craft breweries around the country that were founded in 1988. This new beer was created to build on a history of great porters from both breweries: Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Edmund Fitzgerald Porter out of Cleveland, Ohio and Deschutes Brewery’s Black Butte Porter out of Bend, Oregon.
“We enjoy creating collaboration beers, and the sense of camaraderie and partnership that it brings, both to us and to our fans,” said Mark Hunger, brewing and quality control manager for Great Lakes Brewing Company. “This collaboration was especially gratifying as we are recognizing a true landmark in the history of both our companies – 25 years of bringing craft beer to market. What a great way to celebrate.”

USA: Constellation Brands not expecting big change in Corona and Modelo Especial pricing strategy later this year

Constellation Brands Inc has not yet decided whether to raise prices on beers like Corona Extra and Modelo Especial later this year, but its chief financial officer said the pricing strategy should be no different than before despite the change in ownership, Reuters reported on May, 3.

Constellation is taking over the U.S. business of Grupo Modelo in a $4.75 billion deal required as part of Anheuser-Busch InBev's $20.1 billion takeover of Mexico's largest brewer. U.S. regulators were very concerned that if AB InBev owned Modelo in the United States, it would raise prices for consumers more aggressively than Modelo's U.S. importer, Crown Imports, had in the past.
Crown is a joint venture between Constellation and Modelo and Constellation is buying out its partner. Ryder noted that the management team that made pricing decisions before will stay the same.

USA, MN: Summit Brewing continues its expansion with the installation of new fermentation tanks
|
On May, 1 two massive cranes hoisted four giant fermentation tanks into the sky, down through a roof hatch and into Summit’s new $13 million “cellar” in St. Paul.
The new cellar will double Summit’s production capabilities to 240,000 barrels of beer at any given time. It typically takes two to six weeks to brew a batch of ale or lager.
Each of the new stainless steel tanks stands 43 feet high, 12 feet wide and “holds 18,000 gallons of beer. That’s a lot of servings,” Summit founder and President Mark Stutrud said. “Our customers are driving us to do this,” Stutrud said. “Last summer we really hit capacity.”
But soon, Summit, which sells beer to 17 states, will suffer no more shortages.
The four newest tanks should be operational in about 35 days, Stutrud said. The others should be online this summer. Each of the 12 tanks will hold 600 barrels of beer. Summit already has 24 smaller tanks that sit in a connected building, but they hold just 300 barrels of beer.
Stutrud, who already has 60 full-time and 12 part-time workers, just hired another brewer and will add five new marketing, sales and administrative workers this summer.

Canada, BC: Vancouver Island Brewery launches Concert Series with Festival Ale

Vancouver Island Brewery announced the launch of a new series of limited edition beers that will be released in partnership with local music festivals and events, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 1.
Called the Concert Series, the first beer is a 5% abv golden ale that is being released under two labels - VIC Fest Festival Ale and Vancouver Island Musicfest Festival Ale.
Both editions of Festival Ale are available now throughout the Island, and they will also be served at the respective festivals – VIC Fest on June 21st & 22nd, and Vancouver Island Musicfest on July 12th to 14th.

USA, WA: Elysian Brewing launches Space Dust

Seattle-based Elysian Brewing introduced a new limited edition brew, Space Dust, to its Manic IPA series, Shanken News Daily reported on May, 1.
The beer will be available on draft and in 22-ounce bottles in select restaurants, bars and retail stores from May to August.
The Manic IPA series launched last February with Idiot Sauvin, followed by Prometheus and Valhalla throughout the year.
Elysian’s distribution footprint currently comprises 10 states ranging from the West to the East Coast.

Wild Rose Barrel-Aged Cherry Porter was aged in fresh bourbon barrels.

USA, CO: Avery Brewing to release Volunt Plus Erat

Avery Brewing has release its latest small-batch sour ale, westword.com reported on April, 29.
The beer is No. 14 in the Boulder brewery's acclaimed Barrel-Aged Series. It has been eight months since No. 13, Odio Equum, was released.
Volunt Plus Erat was fermented with two strains of brettanomyces yeast.
There is an extremely limited amount of the beer available to the public, 55 cases, so bottles were only sold Saturday, May 4 from the Avery taproom. Bottles cost $8 each and there was a limit of six per person.
The brewery waited eight months between releases because it wanted to make sure the beer was ready and because Avery, which has been struggling to keep up with demand for its bigger production beers, needed to find the tank space, Avery spokesman Joe Osborne explains.
Avery's fifteenth Barrel-Aged beer, Momi Hiwa - a rum-barrel-aged coconut porter - will be ready soon, however, as well as a sixteenth beer later this year.
Avery likes to use Latin, Greek or other languages to name the beers in this series because they are "experimental, creative beers with a lot of mystery to them," Osborne says. "So we wanted to have mystery with the names as well."

China's microbrew enthusiasts are aiming for a revolution in the drinking habits of the most populous nation, China Daily reported on May, 3.
Bad Monkey Brewery in the popular tourist town of Dali in Yunnan may be an anomaly in rural China, but it's part of a small yet nascent business: craft-beermaking in the world's most populous nation - and the biggest beer-drinking country.
"Our company has witnessed the changes in consumer preferences first-hand in China since 2003," Carl Oakley and Scott Williams, owners of Bad Monkey, wrote in a comment in response to a Wall Street Journal article about craft brewers collaborating in China. "[We have found] many Chinese drinkers who are adventurous enough and affluent enough to pay more for a tastier, higher quality brew."
Other craft beer companies in China include Chengdu Beer and Harvest Beer in Chengdu, Sichuan province; Strong Ale Works in Qingdao, Shandong province; The Old Brewery in Yangzhou and Nanjing Craft Brewing Co in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. The strongest presence in the emerging craft-beer revolution is in Shanghai and Beijing, where six - soon to be seven - homegrown craft breweries exist.

Interest in craft brewing continues to grow in New Zealand, despite a decline in the overall beer market, Stuff.co.nz reported on May, 5.
David Cryer, founder of Cryer Malts which supplies the country's brewers with specialty malts from all over the world, said in the 12 months to the start of April, sales of craft beer were up just over 30 per cent on the corresponding period in 2011.
What makes that doubly impressive is that against a backdrop of a weak economy and high unemployment, the total beer market continued to decline.
It was down by 2.4 per cent year-on-year, said Cryer.
Craft beer is a term widely applied, but in general stands for traditional beers brewed by smaller, aspiring brewers who seek to produce brews that are distinct in quality and character.
Much to the annoyance of some, though, the craft beer figures include the Macs, Monteiths and Boundary Road brands run by large overseas-owned brewers Lion Nathan, DB and Asahi.
Some see these as "faux" craft beer. More generously, others said they help promote wider awareness of the craft styles available.

Australia: AWB hoping to wind up 2012-13 barley pools by July

AWB hopes to wind up its 2012-13 barley pools by July to take advantage of current good prices.
The company said it expected prices to decline in the second half of the year as the northern hemisphere crop comes on to the market, Weekly Times Now reported on May, 8.
AWB said barley prices were holding up on the east coast of Australia but the company left estimated pool returns unchanged today.
AWB manager Richard Williams said the EPRs for South Australian barley have dropped A$5 a tonne due to limited domestic demand and limited export capacity holders.
“We continue to sell remaining volumes mainly into Asia and domestically in Victoria as barley is being used in feed rations at the expense of stronger domestic wheat prices,” Mr Williams said.
The Victorian EPR for Hindmarsh barley was left at A$284 a tonne, FOB, while the return for Feed 1 grade was estimated at A$281 a tonne.
The SA EPR for Feed 1 barley was reduced to A$276 a tonne, FOB.
