Assessment of changes in hop resins and polyphenols during long-term storage
ABSTRACT
The storage stability of hop pellets is a concern of every brewer and it has been shown in the past that certain varieties exhibit a better storage stability than others. This study was an extensive investigation about the storage stability of the
Czech hop varieties Sladek, Agnus, Saaz and Premiant. Aging of hop pellets was negilible during storage if the pellets were protected from oxygen. When exposed to oxygen, the degradation of alpha and beta acids was severe and accelerated after 6 months. In this comparison, Saaz was found to be the most stable Czech hop variety.

USA: New research confirms consumers shift towards craft beer
|
According to Chicago-based research firm Mintel, consumers who were of legal drinking age in 2012 are the most likely to report increased consumption of beer (14 percent), which includes 7 percent of respondents who are drinking more craft beer in 2013 compared to 2012.
In addition, discovery of new beers is popular with 93 percent of imported beer drinkers, 88 percent of domestic fans and 84 percent of craft beer consumers.
Mintel released these new insights as the industry celebrates American Craft Beer Week.
Broken down by demographics, craft beers appeal to 49 percent of Millennials and 40 percent of those in Generation X. However, only 29 percent of Baby Boomers and 22 percent of the Swing Generation/World War II demographic find the segment appealing, the research firm added.
Hispanic consumers also turn to craft beer, with 38 percent indicating that they drink craft beer at any time. However, Mintel also found there is room to capture more of the Hispanic market -- 58 percent of Hispanics over 21 years old report drinking domestic beer and 55 percent of Hispanics drink imported beer.

USA: North Dakota Barley Council chairman comments on the US malting barley industry
|
North Dakota Barley Council chairman Doyle Lentz attended the World Barley, Malt and Beer Conference in Madrid, Spain and addressed those attending on what the United States is doing to stabilize and perhaps even expand barley acres in the U.S, Farm & Ranch Guide reported on May, 16.
This was the seventh gathering for this group, which was held in mid-March. Hosted biennially since 2001, the three-day event is attended by more than 300 people from about 40 countries.
“When we started seeing a decline in barley acres in the U.S., we started going to these so we could get a feel for what was going on in the world,” Lentz said. “When these conferences first started there was no problem with barley supply in other parts of the world. But now those other areas of the world are seeing a decline in barley acres as growers switch to other crops.”
“So all of a sudden they are quite interested in what we have done in the U.S.,” he said.

Canada, BC: Phillips Brewing releases three summer beers
|
Like many breweries across the country, Phillips Brewing is releasing something summery for the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 14.
Phillips releases three warm weather brews, all of them made with wheat.
Returning after a quick and popular appearance last August is Electric Unicorn White IPA.
Back for its customary annual release is Raspberry Wheat Ale, one of Phillips original beers.
And also back for a summer run is Wheatking Hefeweizen.
Electric Unicorn and Raspberry Wheat will be available in 650 ml bottles, and Wheatking in six-packs of 341 ml bottles, at the Phillips brewery store and in select private liquor stores in BC.

Canada, QC: Unibroue brings back Seigneuriale
|
Unibroue announced the return of a lesser known but well loved brand that has been unavailable for half a decade, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 14.
Originally brewed by the now defunct Brasserie Seigneuriale, and available for several years from Unibroue before being retired in 2008, Seigneuriale is a strong Belgian-style amber ale.
Unibroue Seigneuriale is available now in several provinces, and has been released in 341 ml bottles distributed exclusively in a Unibroue mixed pack, as well as in 750 ml bottles. Format availability and price varies by province.

USA, TX: Saint Arnold Brewing Company releases Bishop’s Barrel No. 3

Saint Arnold Brewing Co., the oldest craft brewery in Texas, releases Bishop’s Barrel No. 3, craftbeer.com reported on May, 13.
The third offering of Saint Arnold’s small batch barrel aged series of beers, Bishop’s Barrel No. 3 is a Russian Imperial Stout aged for 12 months in oak bourbon barrels.
Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel No. 3 will only be available in pubs and restaurants throughout Texas and Louisiana that normally carry Saint Arnold beer.
Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel is a series of beers that have been aged in barrels specifically chosen to enhance and complement the characteristics of the underlying beers. Each batch of Bishop’s Barrel is distinguished by the number on the neck label.

USA, GA: Southbound Brewing Co. releases its first beer
|
Southbound Brewing Co. debuted its first batch of beer, a Belgian wheat-style brew, the Scattered Sun Belgian Wit, savannahnow.com reported on May, 15.
The beer will be available to the general public at local taverns, including The Distillery, Wild Wing Café, B&D Burgers and the Warehouse over the next week.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Carly Wiggins, cofounder of Southbound Brewing Co., said. “It’s good to finally have product for people to taste rather than have to just describe it to them.”
The second of Southbound’s three initial beers, an India pale ale known as Hoplin’ IPA, is still in the brewing process but will be available next week. The third beer, the Iron Lion Pale Ale, is made with water from the IPA and will be available later in the month.
Southbound’s product is sold only on draft right now. The company has plans for bottling and canning the beer but not for at least another 10 months.
The beer is in demand. A representative for Southbound’s distributor, United, said many downtown Savannah clients have pre-ordered or requested the beer.
“The local bars are enthusiastic about having locally brewed beers, especially the downtown bars that see a lot of tourists,” United’s Scott Garner said.

USA, RI: Foolproof Brewing Company opens in Massachusetts

Foolproof Brewing Company announced on May, 15 that its beers will be available for sale in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts starting May, 20.
The Massachusetts Beverage Alliance (MBA) will distribute Foolproof’s beers statewide via Atlas Distributing Inc., Burke Distributing, Colonial Wholesale Beverage, Commercial Distributing Company, and Merrimack Valley Distributing Company.
“This is our first venture into a market outside of our home state of Rhode Island,” said Nick Garrison, Foolproof’s president and founder. “We look forward to entering Massachusetts and introducing our unique and flavorful brews to one of the fastest growing and most reputable beer markets in the country.”
“The passion that Nick and his team bring to the business is tremendous,” said Brian Murphy, MBA’s director of sales and marketing. “The demand for local, high-quality craft beer in cans is high right now. This partnership allows us to take advantage of a great opportunity to offer our retailers something that their customer base is wanting more and more of.”

Santa Fe Brewing Company and Central States Beverage Company announced they will partner to brew the first ever brewer/distributor collaboration beer, craftbeer.com reported on May, 13.
This unique beer will be packaged in kegs only and is being brewed exclusively for sale in the Kansas City market area later this year.
Central States, Santa Fe’s local distributor in Kansas City, and Santa Fe decided that it was time to add a unique twist to the brewer/brewer collaborations, which are highly popular in the industry and thus the brewer/distributor collaboration idea was born.

USA, CO: Twisted Pine Brewing Company releases Cucumber Cream Ale

Fans of Twisted Pine Brewing Company will soon find a super-refreshing new way to cool off in the early summer sun as the brewery releases their Cucumber Cream Ale, the second offering from its popular Farm to Foam series, craftbeer.com reported on May, 14.
Twisted Pine began the Farm to Foam series last year as “a tribute to the sustainable spirit of Colorado.” With that goal in mind, the brewers source all ingredients for each beer in-state.
Cucumber Cream Ale will be available in limited amounts on draft and in wax-dipped 750ml bottles throughout Colorado and a select few other states.
Based in Boulder, Colorado, Twisted Pine Brewing Company has been hand-crafting quality ales since 1995. In addition to such favourites as Hoppy Boy IPA, Raspberry Wheat Ale and Billy’s Chilies, the brewery has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of style guidelines with such creations as Big Shot Espresso Stout, Northstar Imperial Porter and Ghost Face Killah.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has formed a partnership with three local breweries for its 2013 Cultivate Festivals in San Francisco, Denver and Chicago to produce a one-of-a-kind “Cultivate Farmhouse Ale”, a Saison-style beer that will be exclusively poured at the Cultivate festivals, craftbeer.com reported on May, 15.
The beer is made in partnership with Speakeasy Ales & Lagers in San Francisco, Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, and Five Rabbit Cerveceria in Chicago.
“Cultivate is a celebration of great local and artisanal foods,” said Chris Arnold, director of communications at Chipotle. “In keeping with that spirit, we have always served a menu of special items that are only available at these events, and thought it would be great to incorporate that same idea into the tasting tent, so we teamed up with local brewers to make that happen. The result of that collaboration is a Cultivate Farmhouse Ale that is both complimentary to the food we serve and very enjoyable to drink.”

USA, CO: Left Hand brings back St. Vrain

For the first time in over 4 years, Left Hand’s Belgian Tripel is back for summer 2013, craftbeer.com reported on May, 16.
Named for the local river running alongside the brewery, St. Vrain is a true to style Belgian Tripel.
Since the beer’s last release in 2009, the 2013 edition of St. Vrain features a label redesign in line with the rest of Left Hand portfolio. Available in of Left Hand’s 27 state distribution, St. Vrain will be packaged in 22 oz bottles and kegs.

USA, CO: Strange Brewing releases Dr. Strangelove in bottles

The crew behind Strange Brewing are preparing to launch in Denver a beer named Dr. Strangelove, westword.com reported on May, 16.
Strange will release 1,000 bottles of Dr. Strangelove, a 11.5 percent ABV barleywine-style ale. It is the first beer that Strange has packaged in bottles.
"Hopefully, this will be a big deal," says Strange co-owner Tim Myers, who brewed this batch of Dr. Strangelove shortly after winning the medal and has been aging it since.
The bottles - which will be hand-labeled, dipped in wax and individually numbered - will go on sale for $20 each; there is a limit of two cases per person.
Tim Myers, the owner, hopes to brew twice as much this year for a batch in 2013, and he says the beer, like most barleywines, will improve with age. "It was servable at three months and better at six months."
Strange, which opened during American Craft Beer Week in 2010, is celebrating its third anniversary this week with a series of events.

Canada, ON: Creemore Springs Brewery launches Sunny & Share Citrus Saison
|
Creemore Springs Brewery announced plans for a new beer in their off-shoot Mad & Noisy Brewing line, and will be launching it and the previous M&N brand in packaged retail format for the first time, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 15.
The new Sunny & Share Citrus Saison is inspired by a trip that the Creemore brewing team recently took to Belgium.
Sunny & Share Citrus Saison will be available in 625 ml bottles at bars and restaurants, and 473 ml cans at The Beer Store and select LCBO locations.
It will be joined in the latter format by Hops & Bolts India Pale Lager, the inaugural Mad & Noisy brand that was previously distributed exclusively on draught. Both beers are planned to be released to retail by June 3rd.

Canada, MB: Half Pints Brewing launches Old Red Barn Sour Ale

The latest limited edition release from Half Pints Brewing has been announced, with release set for next week, Canadian Beer News reported on May, 16.
Old Red Barn is a Flanders Red Ale that has been aged for nearly two years.
Old Red Barn will be released exclusively at the Half Pints brewery retail store on Saturday May 25th. It will retail for C $13.30 (plus tax and deposit) per 650 ml bottle, and sales will be limited to 3 bottles per customer while supplies last.

Africa: SABMiller counting on local crops to expand in Africa

SABMiller plc is counting on cassava and other local crops such as sorghum to expand in Africa, where it estimates homebrews or cheap spirits account for some three-quarters of all alcohol consumed, Bloomberg reported on May, 16.
Brewers in recent years have increasingly emphasized high-end brands to boost margins by getting drinkers to spend more on each beer they consume. While SABMiller’s cassava-based Eagle beer is far from a premium product, it represents a similar strategy because for the majority of Africa’s population the beer is an indulgence that costs more than twice what homebrews do.
Emerging markets are key for brewers. The three biggest are based in Western Europe where austerity and a prolonged economic slump have cut into consumption. SABMiller, which traces its roots to South Africa, gets more of its sales outside of Europe and North America than the others, which has helped keep its estimated price-earnings ratio at the highest of its peer group.
Shares of London-based SABMiller have rallied about 60 percent since November 2011, when it launched its first cassava-based beer, Impala, in Mozambique. Impala now accounts for more than 5 percent of Cerveceria de Mocambique’s volume.

SABMiller's Zimbabwe unit reported a 36 percent rise in full-year earnings on May, 15, driven by strong sales of premium lager and non-alcoholic beverages, The Economic Times said.
Delta Corporation, 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller, said earnings per share rose to 8.49 cents in the year ending March, up from 6.22 cents previously.
After-tax profit rose to $104 million, compared to $72 million in 2012.
Zimbabwe's economy, which had grown by nearly double digit figures from 2009 to 2011, was expected to grow 5 percent this year after a sharp slowdown in 2012.
Elections planned for later this year could pose risks for the fragile economy in the southern African country where previous polls have been marred by deadly violence.

World: Diageo to toast soon the retirement of CEO Paul Walsh

Diageo, the British company behind spirits like Guinness, Johnnie Walker Scotch and Smirnoff vodka, will soon toast the retirement of its long time chief, Paul S. Walsh. The veteran executive plans to pass the top job to COO Ivan M. Menezes at the beginning of July, the company announced earlier this month.
Walsh, who managed an impressive expansion of Diageo’s business, will remain for a year to ease the transition. He plans to retire in June 2014. Under Walsh, Diageo’s stock rose more than 250%, as he maneuvered the company into faster-growing emerging markets.
“The handover is being made at a time when the business is strong and Ivan takes on the role of chief executive officer at an exciting stage of the company’s global development,” says Diageo Chairman Franz B. Humer.
Walsh made no secret of this succession planning, telling The Wall Street Journal last year, “I think every CEO should take the issue of succession planning very, very seriously. My job is to give the board options. It’s pretty clear…that Ivan is the lead internal candidate. There are many other talented players in this business as well, but Ivan is the lead player.”
