Different Phenolic Compounds Activate Distinct Human Bitter Taste Receptors

ABSTRACT
In 2009, German researchers found that the responsible sensory bitter receptors for alpha, iso-alpha acids and beta acids are the receptors hTAS2R1, hTAS2R14 and hTAS2R40, reacting with the different bitter acids. Another German team of researchers were also able to determine the bitter receptors reacting with different plant polyphenols, namely the receptors hTAS2R4, hTAS2R5, hTAS2R7, hTAS2R39. With this they also discovered that some of the individual thresholds of the polyphenolic substances are extremely low. So maybe there are very bitter polyphenolic substances also in beer we have not discovered so far.

Brewery news USA: McCraith Beverages launches lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch InBev
McCraith Beverages, based in New York Mills, N.Y., filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York against Anheuser-Busch InBev for assigning new beers to a rival distributor, St. Louis Today reported on May, 17.

In the lawsuit, McCraith alleges it was granted exclusive distribution rights between 1994 and 2004 to distribute Rolling Rock, Stella Artois, Becks, Bass and other beers by Labatt USA, which was later acquired by InBev USA.

Belgium-based InBev acquired St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch in 2008.

Since then, McCraith, a MillerCoors distributor, has continued to distribute the legacy InBev brands, but not other A-B brands such as Budweiser or Bud Light.

McCraith alleges that when A-B launched new beers in recent months that are extensions of the legacy InBev brands, including Bass IPA and Beck's Sapphire, A-B assigned the new beers to another distributor in New York.

According to McCraith, assigning a new distributor violates New York's Alcoholic Beverage Control law, which prohibits brewers from modifying a beer distribution agreement without cause. McCraith said it estimates its damages are at least $240,000.

Gary Ettelman, an attorney representing McCraith, said splitting up distribution of a brand extension from its parent brand negatively impacts sales ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Exports of US made craft beers expand across the world
American-made craft beer is entering its heyday in America - dozens of other countries might be buying that same craft beer, too, US News reported on May, 17.

The Brewers Association tells that American craft beer export volumes climbed by an incredible 72 percent in 2012 over the previous year. U.S.-made craft beer – from breweries such as Boston Brewing Company, DC Brau, or New Belgium Brewing that produce fewer than 6 mln barrels of beer a year – is today on store shelves in countries like Sweden and Canada. Sweden has embraced light lager alternatives to the domestic beers from Spendrups and Carlsberg that have dominated their shelves for years, while Canada has fallen in love with America's hoppy beers.

Much of the credit can go to the Department of Agriculture, which through its Market Access Program has given the Brewers Association an average of $400,000 annually for the past four years to help get its craft beers abroad.

"What we do with that money is we try to establish a relationship," says Bob Pease, chief operating officer of the Brewers Association.

Agriculture Department spokeswoman Sally Klusaritz says market access funds were also used to familiarize importers in countries including Germany, Taiwan and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft beer sector seen as serious threat to Molson Coors profitability
Big beer is in trouble. For decades, Amercians were content to drink watered-down beer so long as it was a brand they recognized. However, more and more Americans are starting to care what their alcoholic beverages taste like, thus giving rise to the domestic craft beer industry and lowering sales of past American favorites like Anheuser-Busch InBev NV's Budweiser, Insider Monkey reported on May, 22.

Although the craft beer industry poses a major threat to its business, Molson Coors Brewing Company is likely to thrive despite competitive pressures.

The company is the second-largest North American brewer, with operations concentrated in mature markets. As a result of its relative lack of explosive growth, the company has developed an efficient distribution system and economies of scale. This has allowed Molson Coors Brewing Company to earn double-digit operating margins in each of the last six years.

One reason investors have shied away from the stock is due to the controlling stakes of the Molson Coors Brewing Company families. However, closely-held companies often focus on creating long-term shareholder value rather than pursuing strategies that boost the stock price only temporarily; as a result, capital allocation will likely be in the best interest of long-term shareholders.

Brewery news Canada: Guinness Black Lager Beer launched in Canada
Canadian beer drinkers no longer have to wait 119.5 seconds for the perfect pint of GUINNESS Draught Stout. In stores now, GUINNESS Black Lager Beer promises all of the character that GUINNESS beer drinkers have come to love, but with a refreshing new taste available instantly with the pop of a bottle cap. The new GUINNESS Black Lager combines the roasted barley flavour that GUINNESS Draught is famous for with a crisp new approach and marks an exciting new addition to the over 250 year old GUINNESS family of beers, Sacramento Bee reported on May, 21.

"With GUINNESS Black Lager we really wanted to build on all the elements that people love about the GUINNESS brand. We take immense pride in the quality of our product and ensured that we built on the GUINNESS brewing legacy when creating this distinctive and refreshing lager. I have no doubt that GUINNESS and lager fans alike will enjoy this unique tasting new lager," said GUINNESS Master Brewer Fergal Murray.

"It's not every day that a company with over 250 years of experience brewing the world's finest stout introduces a new beer, and we are excited to be bringing GUINNESS Black Lager to Canada," said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Devils Backbone Brewing Company begins expansion
Work began this month on a $3.25 mln expansion to the Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s two facilities in Roseland and Lexington, newsadvance.com reported on May, 20.

According to founder Steve Crandall, the additions to the 100-acre Roseland location are fewer and smaller and should amount to about $250,000 of the total cost.

At the Nelson County brewpub, the company is adding 20 new hectoliter fermenters and a bright tank, adding to the kitchen’s dry storage space, expanding the kegging operational space and creating a larger walkin cooler, Crandall said.

He said business at the Roseland location is growing substantially.

“We have not been able to keep up with the demand, and this will help us a little bit,” he said.

Crandall said the restaurant brewpub in Roseland makes a lot of unique beer, which is a big part of the business.

He said they experiment with new beer styles on a weekly basis, and “this helps us sort of expand that capability.”

As for the expansion at the outpost production brewery in Lexington, Crandall said the company is increasing its indoor workspace from 15,000 square feet to 28,000 square feet, which will give the company room to expand the packaging hall, add more office space and triple ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Caution Brewing to open second brewery
After two years in business on Denver's northeast side, Caution Brewing announced that it will open a second brewery in Lakewood, westword.com reported on May, 20.

Cautions' existing brewery will stay open as well.

The new location will have a smaller brewhouse - three barrels as opposed to five at the existing brewery - but a larger taproom. It will also be situated in a high-traffic shopping center on Wadsworth, rather than an industrial business park.

There is only one other independent brewery in Lakewood, the Ironworks Brewery & Pub, so Caution owner Danny Wang says it presented the perfect opportunity.

"It's Colorado's fifth biggest city, so we were surprised that there aren't any other production breweries there," says Wang. "The idea for us is to be a neighborhood brewery and to be more retail-friendly."

Caution-Lakewood will have twelve taps, which will give Wang the space to brew different styles of beer while pouring his flagships as well.

One of those flagships is Lao Wang Lager, which Wang had originally brewed for his parents' Federal Boulevard restaurant, Lao Wang Noodle House, using a secret blend of spices that they also use in their kitchen.

When the new brewery opens, however, it will come complete with a two-head ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Atwater Brewery expands
Atwater Brewery has grown considerably since the last two years, modelmedia.com reported on May, 21.

It has upped its brewing capacity from 7,000 barrels to 30,000 barrels. Last year it brewed 12,000 barrels of beer and is on track to brew another 22,000 barrels. The brewery's beers are currently in 15 states and its overall goal is to hit 100,000 barrels by 2015.

"The demand for our brand is hot," says Mark Rieth, owner of Atwater Brewery. "Plus local sales. About 60 percent of our sales are from Michigan."

Atwater Brewery is also working toward expanding its reach. The company is renovating a church in Grosse Pointe Park into a brewpub. The brewery is also looking at expanding its current production facility to a new building on the riverfront and opening a tap room in the downtown area, however, both projects are still in the preliminary planning stages.

Brewery news Canada, ON: The North York’s Black Creek Historic Brewery launches Montgomery’s Courage
North York’s Black Creek Historic Brewery has launched its latest ale, named Montgomery’s Courage, insidetoronto.com reported on May, 17.

The Montgomery’s Courage beer is the third edition in a series of 12 historic brews representing each consecutive decade of Canadian and brewing history.

Montgomery’s Courage represents 1830 to 1839, when the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada revolted against unfair government rule.

According to legend, rebel forces that met a Montgomery’s Tavern gained their courage for their short-lived uprising by sampling many of the establishment’s fine ales, the brewery said.

Montgomery’s Courage is available while supplies last at select LCBO stores. It sells for C $3.95 for a 500 millilitre bottle.

Beer is available at the Black Creek Historic Brewery and Pub and can be purchased to take home in returnable growlers.

Brewery news USA, MO: The Rip Brewing Company opens in North Kansas City
The Big Rip Brewing Company opened in North Kansas City on Sunday, May, 19.

The two-man microbrewery served samples of beer to the participants in the Tour de Brew bike race as part of the official opening of their Tap Room.

Josh Collins and Kip Feldt have been working on launching Big Rip, which includes a production brewery and tap room, since last summer. Big Rip is now scheduling tours of its brewery.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Iron Hill Brewery arrives in Voorhees Town
20 stainless steel brewing tanks arrived at the Voorhees Town Center. The tanks will be installed at the new Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, scheduled to open in August, Courier Post reported on May, 21.

The Voorhees location will be the chain’s second in South Jersey. A Maple Shade restaurant opened in 2009.

“This is very exciting,” said head brewer Kevin Walter.

“We’ve been waiting for this for the last year and a half. There have been some delays, but now we finally got it on schedule, and the tanks are finally here.”

Walter said he hoped to start brewing beer in “about four to five weeks, if all goes well.”

Sellers of French spring malting barley have started to offer the commodity at discount prices in order to clear their warehouses before the new crop comes in, however, the market is not at its most active, La Depeche reported on May,21.

There are still very few first-hand sellers of new 2013 crop present on the market of malting barley.

Feed barley markets are reported to be calm, with a significant offer at lower prices.

Brewery news Kenya: Heineken not to launch female-oriented Radler beer in Kenya
Heineken will not be launching its sweeter, low-alcohol Radler beer in Kenya. It will instead focus on its flagship brand to grow local market share, Business Daily reported on May, 21.

The Dutch brewer, which set up in Kenya in 2011, says it will use Heineken beer brand to reduce the dominance of East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), especially in the premium category.

The firm is wooing female African drinkers with Radler, a beer made from malt and lemon, to grow market share in a continent dominated by rivals SAB Miller and Diageo — which has majority shares in EABL.

“Radler is not and will not be launched in Kenya,” said the brewer’s general manager East Africa, Koen Morshuis, in an e-mail interview. “Within the East African market Heineken is only focusing on its flagship brand Heineken.”

East African market is increasingly becoming a battle zone between SABMiller and Diageo as both firm’s race to grow their regional footprint.

The number three global brewer, Heineken, has been a late entrant into the region after opening the regional headquarters in Nairobi in 2011.

The headquarters is in charge of marketing while distribution is handled by Maxam Ltd, which is associated with businessman Ngugi Kiuna who has ...More info on site
